Greek/Euro Crisis Explained

radx says...

Keynes and others made the same argument against the Treaty of Versailles. You mentioned how that turned out.

Folks did in fact learn from that mistake, but after everything is said and done, it was the Soviet expansion that made the case. Germany was the frontier and to turn it into some shithole or even a failed state would have made it worthless in the struggle against Soviet expansion. Germany was expected to a) keep them in check, and b) serve as a prime example of how much better life is within the realm of capitalism. If it hadn't been for T-34s in Berlin, I'm not entirely sure we would have been treated as favourably as we were.

In any case, even after much of the debt was written off, the remaining payments were stretched out over decades, so as to not be too much of a drain on the economic development of the country.

Still, it's not the same with Greece. We only torched half the continent, but they dodged their taxes. That's a million times worse, it seems.

While we're on the subject of tax evasion: Luxembourg alone accounts for about €20b-€30b a year of lost tax revenue in Germany. Yap, the tax system implemented by none other than troika member Jean-Claude Juncker is more of a drain on the public budget in Germany than Greece could ever be.

b) European countries agreed to forget large portions of Germany's debts, because back then we seemed to know that is was pointless to wreck a country and cause untold misery, pain and death to the residents all in the name of profiting off them.

Badminton: Play of the Day alright... holy cow

Sagemind says...

Hmmm, not sure how to respond to this.
Trust me, I was being completely serious. I honestly didn't know it was played at a competition level.

They sell them in the toy sections of every grocery and department store. It's a game, like lawn darts and bocci ball that we play when family comes to visit or at picnics. And every time we play it, even now, with my kids, we have to find the least broken rackets and the least squashed birdie to play with.

Seeing it played in competition, makes me think of competitive dodge-ball, something I also didn't know was a real sport other than in gym class.

Delicate Surgery

I was going to dodge your reply but I always enjoyed the games I attended when Barry Bonds tore shit up, even at the cost of my home team.

But I've witnessed first hand several of Piazzas's epic grand slams. Most games are like, well, ok that was boring, if not medatative, but not those Piazza games.

Sort of like this surgery. Most surgeries are just so boring. But this is home run leading shit right here.

Starboard tack does NOT have right of way over a ferry...

Sorry, one more detail; the newspaper story. Ferry altered course to port (left) to try and dodge but there was a reef/rocks and she couldn't move much more---
Had to stop and assist the rather clueless sailors.

That boat was not under control at all. The jib is starting to rip and god only knows why they had the spinnaker pole attached.

Making Extremely Realistic R/C Cars

According to his description on YouTube it's 3mm PVC Komacel :

"Here is a video of me building a Dodge M37 body from scratch. Edited down to 17 minutes from 3 hours of footage from 60 hours of build time. I hope it can entertain and inspire folks to be creative and make things. The body is made mostly with 3mm thick PVC sheet called Komacel, glued with CA glue. Driver is pine wood, bumper is aluminum. Rides on a GCM 4ten leafed chassis and tcase, rc4wd K44 axles, axial trans, tekin esc and motor."

"esc" in his quote = electronic speed control.

His build of a 77 Ford is equally impressive.

I also liked his makeshift fume-hood. That's gotta be way easier for collecting dust and not having to wear a mask.

Is all the white material just foam core? I didn't know it could be bent by simply heating it a bit. Or is it something else?

Last Week Tonight: Tobacco's Legal Bullies

dannym3141 says...

Systemic corruption will bring this planet to its knees.

And we're all to blame. Unless we're willing to be actively involved in the democratic process, unless we're willing to use our overwhelming manpower to DEMAND justice and fairness, unless we drill into our children how important it is to be just and fair and involved, we will be exploited. And it IS happening on a grand scale.

It doesn't have to be like this, with the corruption in banking, politics, the tax loop-holes for the super rich and the toxic policies introduced for the benefit of corporations. All we have to do is decide to stand up together, for each other, and show them by our actions that we will not take it anymore.

My government won't even prosecute HSBC for illegal activity starving this country (and yours, probably) of untold billions in tax revenue, yet on a daily basis they stand in front of the cameras and tell us how lazy benefits claimants have bled our country dry. They have personally stolen millions from us, standing there in a suit confidently telling us they're going to crack down on cash-in-hand builders and the like. I suspect if we start down that particular rabbit hole, we will be left in awe of just how deep it goes - right to the very top of probably every single developed nation's government, possibly for decades. They have been fostering this environment for a long time, steering us to a point where they hold all the cards.

I hate to think i've become a tinfoil hatter, but just look at what's going on.... How can they say that they'll pursue benefits claimants and VAT-dodges to the end of the earth, but not say a single word about HSBC helping millionaires and billionaires not to pay tax? How can i possibly not see that as a conspiracy? They don't go after HSBC because they are DONORS and FRIENDS.

This isn't stuff i'm making up. It's true, it's real and it's a fucking scary Orwellian nightmare. The guy who leaked the HSBC stuff very recently announced that there are a lot more devastating revelations to come!! (which i read courtesy of al jazeera)

I've never seen this on any of the 5 cars I've owned, nor any of my parents' cars (all together that's 1 Honda, 1 Mazda, 3 VWs, 3 Toyotas, 2 Fords, 1 Chevy, 1 BMW, 1 Geo, and 1 Dodge).

Does anyone have this on their own car?

Oh, and I have to mention, we went to the zoo last week, and they had the cutest oritte.. aardvark there! He was out in the 'watering hole' - a big area where they take animals out, and he was quite unruly.. They wanted to get him back inside, so they could do a cheetah run next, but he kept running around and dodging the door. They had about 5 people with food bowls after him, but he didn't go inside until they brought his aardvark girlfriend as bait

I had never seen one before! Made me think of you!

Neil deGrasse Tyson - Humans Are Too Stupid For Aliens

RFlagg says...

I like him, but... I don't step on the worm. I in fact try to avoid it if directly possible, though if I can't avoid it I'm not going to cry. I'm not going to dodge the car to avoid a worm, but I would step out of the way, and not just for any sort of gross factor in stepping on the worm and having worm parts on my shoe, but out of respect for another living thing. I feel a little bad if I use a worm for bait (less bad oddly for using a maggot).
