I played it on my king ant's huge and heavy office IBM P70 portable computer that was a 386 10 Mhz PC. It had a monochrome monitor, internal Hayes 2400 dial-up modem, and no sound card. It was so choppy, but still worth it.

I think the same for me. I remember Blue's News on dial-up in college. I think I was visiting his former Quake News too!

"job security"? We got outsourced to some offshore low-bidder whose call center was apparently staffed by AOL dial up veterans. The very first all-hands telecom was hosted by some guy on the other side of the planet, who actually spent 30 minutes reading off names instead of using some modern technology to capture attendance. I'm glad I got out of that racket.

Playing it the first time after downloading its 150 MB demo over dial-up modem and being addicted right away in college. Also, meeting the butcher boss saying "Fresh meat".

Ah yeah. I remember qtest86 in a small computer lab on a Linux desktop machine with no audio. Haha. It was cool! I think I was a sophomore back then. Also, I remember QuakeWorld and playable on crappy dial-up modems on crappy GTE phone lines (could never get full speeds too).

I listened to an interview with some connected folks to this situation a few days ago, and there's a bit more to it.

(I don't remember any detail, but the gist was ...)

The ranch is directly adjacent to the refuge, and the government has been trying to grow the refuge.

The government has been trying to get the particular rancher's land for a while, offering to buy it, and generally making living there inconvenient, to encourage him/them to leave.

There was some funny business with the arson charge, like there being some hunters on the land that had a different account of the events, and their account was at odds with what the government asserted happened.

Folks have the opinion that the arson charge was a convenient way of dialing up the 'get out of town' message - and so this occupy whatever response is some sorta backlash. Something like : "You want us to leave so you can have our stuff? Oh yeah? Well why don't YOU leave and we'll take YOUR stuff?! Take that!"

Also, the group has not been isolated. People and media come and do all the time, and the group makes daily statements to the media. One reporter noted that he has only seen one person carrying a firearm the entire time (a single man with a pistol in a holster), and everyone else has no firearms on their person (regardless if they have any in general, they aren't walking around armed).

Ditto. I was a teen(ager) back then! I got it from a local BBS, but couldn’t play it. My next door neighbor could on his 386 DX machine, but he had to study for finals so he only played a few levels. Haha. Years later, I made two DOOM 2 mod(ification)s: http://zimage.com/~ant/antfarm/files/doom2/j2doom/j2doom.html … I still have my external USR Sportster 33.6 dial-up modem. I think I played DOOM at 9600 speeds with my next door neighbor (we both had 14.4k modems! ).

Does anyone remember what time DOOM 1 shareware was released to the public? I couldn't find that answer.

I'm with you, but I must admit that the ONLY argument that gave me any pause was the one that goes "if he is practicing civil disobedience, he should WANT to get arrested and stand trial".

Real civil disobedience types like Martin Luther King Jr. and others intentionally broke laws (bullshit laws, but still laws) knowing full well that they would be arrested and go to jail. The point was to bring those terrible laws under public scrutiny and ideally ridicule. Point out how unfair they are. I think that people that take such actions are incredibly noble and selfless. To a certain degree, I think that the arguments that Snowden could or should follow that approach at least partially resonated with me.

But then, I considered some mitigating circumstances. IF Snowden had done that right out of the gate, he'd probably have been tossed in Gitmo for life without ever standing trial -- the administration has made it clear that they consider him an enemy of the state and that they are fine with the precedents of how such individuals are treated (ie., rights don't apply to you).

Basically, it boils down to respect. Dr. King Jr. hated some of the BS laws and social injustices in the South, but he respected the justice and good intentions of the US Government in general at the time. Snowden, on the other hand, had firsthand knowledge and proof that our government doesn't deserve such respect from us. They lie, they shit on the constitution, and they have the audacity to call him a criminal.

So, fuck them. They've pushed the line too goddamn far to expect civil disobedience; I think they clearly deserve every bit of blowback they get in the form of uncivil disobedience. Hell, I hope that Snowden has enough more dirt that he can turn the dial up to 11 and get into downright nasty disobedience if the government steps a single corrupt toe out of line in their attempts to extradite him back to their bullshit kangaroo courts.
