Daniel Dennett on free will and determinism

Irishman says...

Daniel Dennett is a great scientific thinker but ultimately takes a reductionist view of conciousness which is opposed to thousands of years of philosophic thinking, and ones own experience.

Flan in the face Daniel, flan in the face.

Dr Quantum Visits a 2-Dimensional World

Ornthoron says...

>> ^dannym3141:
Oh dude... you're so completely missing the point, ornthoron. It's so completely basic that you've overstepped it in your intelligence.
They're not trying to trick you!

Have I missed the point? I have actually watched the whole movie that this clip is taken from, and believe me: The point is quite hard to miss. And that point is a completely unfounded idea that you are able to influence your surroundings drastically with mere thoughts, supposedly due to quantum mechanics. And no, they are not trying to trick me, as they probably believe in that nonsense themselves. But they certainly tricked one participant in the film, in that they edited together parts of his interview so that they misrepresented his views.

I think it shows the effect that cynicism and time can have on a person.

That's quite a jugdement to pass on me based only on one short comment. Those who know me will attest to my sincere amazement and love of all the wonders of nature, and will likely not recognize your characterization of me as a cynic. But I am a realist, in that I prefer to be amazed by real phenomena, and not some weird stuff that has been dreamed up by some self-appointed medium, no matter how tantalizing it may seem.

Don't get me wrong: I understand where you're coming from, as I too was once that little boy you describe so nicely in your little story. And I am him to some degree still today, constantly amazed by the new things I discover every day. And that is exactly why I hate this movie, since it wanders off into a pseudo-scientific swamp instead of showing people the wonders of REAL science.

I'll concede that I may have been a little harsh on this one clip in isolation, as it taken by itself doesn't overtly exhibit the New Age mindset that permeates the rest of the film. But if you read between the lines you can clearly see the message of humans possibly transcending into a higher state of conciousness. And that there is no justification for in quantum mechanics.

This video is inspiring, and i want hours of this kind of thing in place of hours of big brother, pop idol, i'm a celebrity, celebrity fit club, celebrity cattle ranch, celebrity FUCKING DIRTY FILTHY LEECHES OF HUMANITY.

Me too. But is it too much to ask that those hours are filled with stuff from reality? There is so much fantastic stuff to choose from that you can fill hours of it without including quasi-philosophical mumbo-jumbo. I speak from the bottom of my heart: Let all the small children be challenged, puzzled, amazed, wondering, talking and asking about all the weird things in the world. But please don't send them hidden messages as well.

Former Racist Repents

10362 says...

religion didn't play a major role in the fall of segregation at all, it was the changing of peoples mindsets and therefore a complete shift in the zeitgeist that brought down the fall. martin luther just happened to be a bible basher. i bet there is not a shred of evidence linking actual organised religion and the bible, to the downfall of segregation.
he lead the movement with religious influences, but peoples minds were changed because their conciousness was raised on how ridiculous segregation was.

also this guys reason is shit, being scared to go to hell, so thats why hes not a racist? well, that's not a good reason to not do something. if that's his reason, he clearly still doesn't know then why its ACTUALLY bad to be a racist and why its wrong on so many levels.

also, he says 'i didn't vote for obama, but i'm happy he's there'.
well......he obviously isn't, because he didn't vote for him.

he shouldn't be applauded at all - a satisfactory ending to this video should have been that that john lewis bloke got to beat HIM up. Then they would have been even, he would have got a taste of what it's like to be on the receiving end.

this man is clearly very simple and swayed by simple things. He was obviously a natural idiot in the first place to be a racist, there was of course a large minority of people back in the 1960's who weren't racist, just like there are a large minority of atheists in america today, so you can't blame it on 'lack of knowledge'.
he is also clearly influenced by ideology, unable to change his points of view due to his own retardness, voting for mccain instead of obama - judging by his accent he's probably from the southern republican states. if you had any common sense at all you'd have voted for obama in the election. (unless you were rich and greedy in which case you had good reason to vote for mccain - this guy is, i presume, in neither of these catergories)

in conclusion this guy is an idiot and should be shot.

well thanks

Your opinion similarly reminds me of that of a young adult. I didn't mention it earlier as I thought it might anger you.

not in the least.

Then what holy hell are we arguing about. We Agree!!! (:
not quite, I disagree that "our" American culture affects everyone - no exceptions - across the board with racism per se, although institutionalized racism obviously still exists and affects people all the time. Believe it or not, one can be insulated enough that racism - institutionalized or personal does not affect one's life overall. American Culture is so incredibly vast and full of subsects and counter-sects that to broad-brush it like you have is to declare all offshoots and counter-sects as unaffective which denies the reason most of them exist in the first place. Not only that but to deny the importance and possibility of overwriting that counter-culture and subculture can have is to dismiss them.

I'm not a psychologist, so I probably wouldn't be the best person to ask."

if you recognize your inadequacy in declaring my own prejudices, then how in holy hell can you be so bold as to declare racism as de facto in all people no matter what? kinda setting yourself up as judge and jury, no?

Specifically? no. Generally? Abso-fricken-lutely, I can judge you as part of the larger multi-cultural society of which I am a part.

if our culture is multi-cultural, then how do you suppose your statment - that everyone within it is ______? Isn't painting all Americans as "a little bit racist" a tad ethnicist? Or do you believe the whole of humanity carries certain psychological issues that could be labelled "racist" by basic nature? In which case, why bother to have such an incendiary term like "racism" fit the bill? Aren't you really talking about the tendancy to categorize, label and/or compartmentalize? those are human traits that show in every culture (albeit in different ways) but not the same thing as "racism". Racism is a specific kind of compartmentalization, labelling and categorization with negative prejudices accompanying, but it is not the same thing as any one of those three. It isthe result of the three that deems a trait negative or positive for a human tendancy. Not the similarity with which it is shown throughout cultures. Again, we are disagreeing semantics but in online communication I believe semantics are far more important than in face-to-face communication where we have the luxery of facial expression, body language, inference, and quick corellation of terminology to keep us on the same page.

Prejudice doesn't discriminate (no pun intended) against willing or unwilling.

Ah but it does! Willing prejudice is making a conscious choice of how to arrange one's priorites and adjust one's actions based on the prejudices chosen. If I willingly choose to be careful of blue-eyed men because I decide they are dangerous, then I exercise prejudicial behavior which is willfully done. Unwilling, however, is not chosen... I can choose to avoid blue-eyed men or I can choose to ride above my fear of them based on my past experiences by reasoning with myself. If it is a concious decision I may not be perfect in my behavior, butI will act differently than if I had unconciously made the choice to avoid them. WIthout willpower, behavior can control a person, with willpower, behavior can be altered.

You are clearly obsessed with how other people perceive you.
I am concious of how other people perceive me, of course and I care, rather than take the faux humble attitude (oh so punk) that I don't care. I care and I don't pretend otherwise but that doesn't mean I'm obsessed. Whose experience would you prefer me to talk about when making analogies? Sorry but that's a bit of a pet peeve of mine: you use your own experiences when discussing an aspect of humanity and are then branded "self-obsessed"
And if you really want the truth of the matter so far as I can impart over the internet, the fact is IF I'm "obsessed" with how people perceive me it is because it has been my life's experience to be reminded on a constant basis of how the world perceives me. I have been called "freak" and "mutant" (among other not so kind terms) since I can remember. When one cannot walk through a grocery store at 3am without someone staring with barely concealed pity or disgust in their eyes, one tends to become aware of the fact that one is clearly viewed in very strict terms by the rest of humanity.

MY OPINION IS MEANINGLESS!
if i thought your opinion was truly meaningless i wouldn' be wasting my time talking to you. i believe every opinion, like every human, has meaning.

Me, me, me, me, me, me, me! When you sing you begin with Do Re Mi, the first three words just happen to be, Mi Mi Mi..... How many I's and Me's do you count in that paragraph?
if you'd rather talk about yourself, by all means, no one is stopping you. i'm sure i'd love to learn more about you. as i said before, who the hell else am i going to talk about? the subject is people, culture, humanity all of which i am a member of and my experience is no less valid than anyone elses.

I don't buy it, you've expended way to much time and energy to not care.
i meant i wouldn't care normaly cuz you issued wshat i think of as a throwaway platitude that seems self-congratilatory and usually i don't bother with those except i think you actually believe it to the extent of defending it with aplomb and intelligence.

There is always violent backlash at every major cultural change. Think of the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, Western Expansion, Suffrage, Civil Rights, etc, etc........ It's painful, but seems to be part of the process.
its also defeatist... catch more flies, and all that

Amazing Airplane Crash - Prevented!

deathcow says...

Thanks Jimnms I fixed the text, but I like my title. This amazing crash prevented an amazing crash of a different nature. The title leads you in that something is not going to go as you expect with this video.

> Oh and the crash was the fault of the pilot in this plane.

Are you sure you can determine fault from this video? Right of way would go to the plane on the right if a concious avoidance was made by two planes on a collision course. "You move!" "No you move!" "I'm to the right, so I have the right of way!" Right of way does not mean if a plane collides into the right side of your aircraft that it is automatically your fault because it came from the right. (correct?) / (incorrect?) IANAP (though I have 20+ hrs solo time and would be excited if pilot died of a heart attack and I got to fly the passengers to safety)

A Gay Brigadier General Asks a question

Lurch says...

Well, the point is that as a man you don't have to choose to desire women. You're built that way. To desire other men there has to be a change at some point to cause that. Whether it's in the womb, a decision (concious or otherwise) brought on by external influences, or a combination of factors hasn't been proven yet. My opinion that it's a choice is just that, a personal opinion. If there's ever concrete scientific evidence where it can positively be stated that it's completely out of someone's control and they just are born wired that way, that's fine. Although that still leaves the people I've known that have claimed it was a concious decision at a point in their life, and that it's like a fetish, meaning that at least some homosexuals are not born with this crossed wiring. If it is true that genetics causes homosexual children to be born, and this has been happening througout all of recorded history, I would think there would be some kindof evolutionary response to begin to weed this weakness out. Doc_m, or someone else with a good genetics backround, please correct me if this is wrong. Also, since I neglected to clarify this in my previous post, my opinion that homosexuality is a decision has no Biblical basis, nor is it a core issue. Only it's immorality, not it's origins, are mentioned.

**EDIT**
For wazant, that scenerio doesn't work. You would walk up to your commanding officer, tell him your gay, wait for laughter, then go back to work. No one is going to discharge you because you claim you're gay. If they discharge someone, it's for other reasons. Usually related to the gay soldiers platoon seriously voicing official complaints, or in extreme cases, catching someone in a homosexual act. You can't just say you're gay and expect them to start your paperwork.

A Gay Brigadier General Asks a question

Lurch says...

Sometimes, if you want to accuse me of never having read the Bible and have a discussion about cherry picking quotes out of context, then start a sift talk post about it. I'll be glad to debate you there, but in here, let's just keep to the topic at hand please.

MINK, I don't understand people that assume that if you don't agree with something, you must be afraid of it in some capacity. I see homosexuality as disgusting because it makes no sense biologically. I agree with Doc_M and I believe he phrased it better with the three basic groups. I think, from personal experience of speaking with gays and lesbians I've known in my life, that most people actually make a concious decision that it is what they want in life and attempt to stick with it. I've known lesbians that stay away from men for reasons other than biology and actually have sometimes wondered why they made the choice they did. I've seen men that are completely masculine that I grew up with make the choice to become gay after coming out of bad home lives and working in an environment with other gay men spouting the same lines as you. "You're probably gay inside." "Who is really hetero?" I think that's garbage. The video that Eric3579 linked to has shown some science involving hormones inbalances that can cause children to come out more masculine or feminine, but there is still no definitive answer on whether that is ultimately what causes homosexuality. If it is 100% genetics or hormone inbalances, that would make homosexuality a birth defect, just like any other. Again, this doesn't mean that they should be treated poorly or have no rights. I just can't agree with people that say this is natural or that everyone that disagrees is a latent gay.

Gold aint what it used to be... the Dead Pool killed it... (Sift Talk Post)

MINK says...

just to clarify my misleading title... i like the dead pool, i just don't like the reward for fixing deads being the same as the reward for a successful sift, because deads are much quicker to fix than sifts are to sift.

i would argue that once you get to gold 100 any further increase in your star rating is kinda academic. the goal should be to suck people in with the incentive of going gold, and then to make that sufficiently rewarding that people stay and behave like good sifters.

BUT the number one problem i see in internet communities is this striving to be perfect, this utopianism, this failing to see the real point of the project.

i first came to videosift when fedquip described it as his "local bar". that is how i see it, and i think that is how most people act (conciously or otherwise)

after all, what is the point of earning star points if you are not involved in the community? i want to be proud to show my gold star, i want people to recognise it as a badge of honour, not just that i spent hours on the site whoring the system.

would the guy with most sift money really be the guy who makes our lives the most wonderful? or are we all slaving away for the perfect sifted archive that nobody actually needs?

this place is the new TV. it is not for archiving the old TV. it is to provide a way you can go to the internet, look for a video you will probably enjoy, find one fast, watch it and comment on it. after that, it's gone, it's disposable. this is why i rent DVDs, i don't buy them. world's changing fast, here today gone tomorrow, etc. i know a guy with all the Friends episodes on VHS who is feeling pretty stupid right now.

I was torn between laying-low, and splitting, after I thought about the top-down losers in the whole thing-and knew that most, likely, you dag, and James, were in your perspective corners of the world, cursing and bitching about me, the last two guys I'd wanna piss of, cause yer so damn cool. (this is not blowing wind up anyone's ass either, I have always thought this)

I am contrite. Enough to still lay-low, cause with that whole mess I whipped up, the most frustrating thing is, I never got to sort it out, I feel, with a view to understanding with fedquip....as hard as I was on him, I wanted him to see it as i saw it, and he did not seem to have the capacity.
My motivations were not even his self-linking, if yall' have not already figured that out. If was his style, and delivery, and his choice of candy wrappers, which I suppose is the same as style, of which his, simply looked like every other, smug editorializer in the media, hence my growing disdain for the name of his collective-why throw it away if your's is programming mostly, the same endless stream of rhetoric. That's where choggie was coming from.....

as to the stream of conciousness, well, if you met me ion person, it would not seem much different-

About Sharia, isn't it true that Islam doesn't necessarily force action, but leaves it upto each individual person to make a concious choice to do a religious duty or not? When did Sharia gain such a dictatorial stance, to the extent of punishing for doing things deemed unIslamic?

They exist to us as creations of our collective societal conciousness, and guffawing at their imperfect lives both brings them momentarily down to the level of the lowely tv viewer and gives another easily digested collective story to share socially.
