Purpose and the Universe by Sean M. Carroll

TheFreak says...

If I see a painting of a landscape I really really like...can I forget that it's canvas and paint and...if I believe haaaaaard enough....can I live inside that painting?

shinyblurry said:

If you look at a painting, you could run experiments to count the number of brush strokes, calculate the dimensions of the frame, determine the chemistry of the pigments, the age of the canvas, and so on. Does that diminish the meaning of the piece? Does that negtate the fact of the painter who painted it? If the answer is no, then neither could our scientific understanding of the Universe prove that there is no meaning to it or there is no Creator behind it.

Her ass? It looked like two weather balloons being inflated under 10 sq. yards of canvas cloth. In the dark light of the club, she looked just shy of being neutrally buoyant , as she literally swept the other dancers off their feet with her wide swinging load.

Concrete Canvas Tent

Sniper007 says...

Um, but this is not a temporary structure. So what if it takes only a day to "build" if you end up not wanting it there in a month... Disaster areas do not stay as such.

I love the idea though. I wonder if you can DIY with the right canvas and concrete. If they're selling it ready to go for under $5k, I can see it being very useful. Even better if you can build it yourself for under $0.5k.

Buildings in a bag. Inflateable concrete shelters.

That's the result of 30 minutes of experiments, but it seems to work. Makeshift code at its best.

I picked this video at random. For any other clip, you'd have to replace the parts I marked in bold. The actual video file is linked twice (troubleshooting_512kb.mp4) and so is the respective folder (http://archive.org/download/HampshireLinuxUserGroupTroubleshootingTools/). Those are the only four entries that need to be changed, as far as I can see.

So, who volunteers to give it a shot?

Edit: bugger, forgot to replace those pesky code characters.

Edit #2: Argh, I hate that bloody code. Now I removed the html tags.

Edit #3: Apparently, those bold tags are not welcome this time around. They make copy-paste much more difficult, so I left them out.

Another Idiotic Crime Committed in America

longde says...

In this case, I stand by "it has nothing to do with race". In the equivalent situation (Baltimore, black thugs/gang, drunk victim) put a black person in the victim's place and nothing changes. Actually, they may have killed/maimed the black victim. The white dude got off light, for Baltimore.

Anyway, they don't scream racial epithets. There is no evidence he was targeted due to being white.

_________________________________________________________________________

I say the Zimmerman case is about race because of Zimmerman's history of profiling black males as criminals. Even the black neighbor who praised Zimmerman said he was uncomfortable walking in his own neighborhood because of the profiling. That's pretty damning in itself.

I say it's about race because Zimmerman's only rationale for pursuing Martin with a loaded gun was his appearance.

I say it's about race, because Zimmerman on the 911 call called Martin a "coon".

I say it's about race due to the (in)actions of the police:
-A homicide goes down and the admitted killer is let go after a couple of hours due to his word in the absence of video or consistent eyewitness accounts? No thorough investigation while they held him? When have you ever heard of that happening? I have black friends who have been wrongly held for days on much less serious allegations.

-The victim, a young teenager, is not identified for days. On that night, the police didn't even canvas the community he was walking in to find out who he was. Can you imagine that happening to any of your teenage friends/relatives? I would think anyone would assume a normal teenager would have concerned parents worried about his absence. And at least look in the most likely place for the parents: the immediate neighborhood.

-They've corrupted the chain of evidence so much, the case had to be taken out of their hands

-This department has a history of mistreating blacks

Plenty of evidence and observations that can't reasonably be explained any other way.>> ^chilaxe:

>> ^longde:
Happens often enough; where are all those national stories?
And for you to level such a broad accusation, you have to show some proof/evidence/facts. Where are these videos you speak of where we without reason mislabel a hate crime?
>> ^chilaxe:
If the ethnicities were reversed, everybody above saying it's not a hate crime would be saying it's without a doubt a hate crime. It'd also be national news.

On the other video, you said: "This crime has nothing to do with race."
"Nothing to do with race" seems to be going a bit far, but the general argument could be reasonable.
If we believed in those standards, we'd apply them to the Trayvon Martin case.
We'd say the critical factors in Martin's case weren't about race, because Zimmerman's black neighbor said he'd have done the same thing, and any teenager who presents himself to the world as being part of gang culture would have a problem in a gated community that's having a problem with crime.

Police Video: No Blood, Bruises On George Zimmerman

Porksandwich says...

@NetRunner

You said: I've not heard anything about evidence collected from Martin's body though. Perhaps there's something there that would be able to definitively establish what happened.

And since I don't feel like wading through the quoting embeds and all that to pick everything out...that'll have to do.

The funeral director who handled Trayvon's body after the coroner said that his hands didn't look like he'd been in a fight. Although the funeral director was kind of an oddball, I don't know if I can take that assessment as true.

Although it does cast even more light on there being a lack of an investigation into Zimmerman. Few points stick out in respect to it:

1) Video cops handles him without gloves...I certainly wouldn't touch blood with my bare hands. And he would presumably be covered in blood from the shooting since he was under him when he shot.....right?

2) 911 Recording with "someone" shouting help, the shouting stops as soon as the shot is heard. Why would the shooter stop yelling for help if he'd just been beaten soundly?

3) Voice analysts can't match the shouter's voice with Zimmerman. Not conclusive, but another "questionable" aspect.

4) They never took Zimmerman's clothes as evidence.

5) They let Zimmerman out before they ever knew where all the following had taken place. They didn't walk through the events with Zimmerman until the next day. So they couldn't possibly have done a proper canvas for witnesses.

6) They didn't even know why Trayvon was in the neighborhood until the next day at the earliest when the missing persons report was filed.

7) Zimmerman followed in spite of what common sense would say for a regular person.

So this is where I'm coming from as I look at the case. And until I see some official reason as to why these things were done as they were that doesn't seem to fall under "cover up/incompetence/some other equally despicable thing"...I question.

My hope is that if they can't find a case against Zimmerman due to a evidence being long gone, is that they ask the same questions and bust that PD in a way that they are absolutely held liable for wrong doing with no defense. I just don't see it happening though with one government agency holding another one to the fire like that.

If this were a murder involving someone I knew, I'd be pissed that there is no official release to answer why they did what they did that made sense. So I can only be pissed on behalf of someone else out there who is left not knowing a damn thing and the person who did the killing is out with only spending a few hours answering questions.

I don't think any outcome will be satisfactory now. Too much stuff has gone wrong for anyone to feel that there is a proper outcome to the events of that night and since.

>>> You think Obama failed because he wasn't liberal enough, is that correct? I saw no vision, just a clever media-protected imago who freely admitted he acted as a mirror or canvas for everyone to project their ideas onto him. Middle East failures are no surprise. He's an appeaser, his offered olive branch to the turbaned vermin was predictably shoved up his you-know-where.

No. I think he failed because he has no balls. He has done everything in half measures, trying to please everyone. If he just pushed his own agenda balls-to-the-wall, he'd be getting a lot more respect from the rest of the world, and Americans too. I think Americans value a strong President even more than one who shares their point of view. On that count, Obama is a ridiculous failure.

>>> It would do more good than fake solar companies. Special thanks to the current idiot Energy Secretary for admitting out loud what the rest of us already knew.

No, it wouldn't. A pipeline taking oil OUT of the country, including American oil couldn't possibly help. Other sources of energy that are used within the country could. In any case, neither choice has any real effect on gas prices.

>>> Where were you with this warning before the scamulus began (and yes, Bush conceived it but Obama supercharged it).

I said it several times back in '08. I may have even said it here.

>>> Back to leadership: a real leader can take it. FDR's scamulus was also a failure and revisionist history hides its lack of effectiveness, but at least FDR said of his enemies, "I welcome their hatred."

That's what I'm saying. Guy's not a leader. He's not even a speaker. He's a speech reader. He did a great job of that during the election, and hasn't done much else since.

My cards on the table: I think Obama is a horrible leader, one of the worst I've ever seen in elected office. I thought he had great vision before, and I liked his early actions in the Middle East, but he seems to lack the balls to do anything decisive. Even if he made strong decisions that I disagreed with I'd respect him more than I do. On that count, Bush was better.

What good would the Keystone Pipeline do the US? All it does is remove oil from the States to sell abroad. How could this possibly be a good thing?

Assuming "scamulous" means "stimulus", then yes, of course it failed. Nothing would have succeeded.

>>> Where were you with this warning before the scamulus began (and yes, Bush conceived it but Obama supercharged it).

And if he hadn't given a stimulus package, the Republicans would have jumped down his throat for doing nothing.

>>> Back to leadership: a real leader can take it. FDR's scamulus was also a failure and revisionist history hides its lack of effectiveness, but at least FDR said of his enemies, "I welcome their hatred."

But per your last comment, "the guy in charge at the time the fit hits the shan gets the blame", so you accept then that the entire worldwide financial crisis is Bush's fault anyway. Deal.

It's a tad more complicated than that. Bush Hatred was a daily staple of the libmedia diet and people were naturally disenchanted with negative-only libmedia reporting on the wars. I'm not sure if Bush got the lion's share of the blame for the Follies of '08...he does deserve blame for the initial scamuli, as well as acting like a liberal with a few conservative tendencies.

The seeds of the banking crisis were sowed by government ineptitude and corruption. Few people take huge risks with their own money, so when a socialist government funds a "Free Houses for Poor People Who Can't Afford Them Act" program and promises banks "risk-free" support of loans and investments to do so, people act accordingly.

Europe has European socialism to blame for its follies. Someone's gotta pay for all that free honey, and when there are more freeloaders than worker bees the hive collapses.

May the majority of bewildered voters not be so readily fooled this year, even if it means electing a stiff like Romney. Welcome back stability after His Earness and his planned chaos. And Barney Frank belongs in an orange jumpsuit for his role in the financial crises.

MANY thanks for your help bud. D'you know if the thumbnail slot accommodates moving gif images?

In reply to this comment by radx:
Yap. In detail, it works as follows:

1: take screenshot
2: paste into Paint.net, select "expand canvas" if neccessary
3: press "s" to select the rectangular selection
4: the lower line of your toolbar includes three pulldown selections: "tool", "selection mode" and "normal" -- click "normal" to switch to "fixed ratio"
5: enter ratio as: "width: 4, height: 3"
6: mark your chosen area of the picture
7: cut the selection (ctrl-x)
8: open new picture with properties: "width: 1, height: 1"
9: paste your selection, select "expand canvas"
10: save your new thumbnailIn reply to this comment by Barseps:
You got any idea how to do that in Paint.net?

In reply to this comment by radx:
1: take screenshot
2: paste into GIMP
3: use rectangular selection with fixed 4:3 ratio
4: profit!
