The Mountain learns true power from champion armwrestler

rich_magnet says...

Devon is a true campion in his sport. Not only is he really good at it, he makes it look FUN. Not an easy thing to do for arm wrestling.

Acute Dupitis (Sift Talk Post)

bareboards2 says...

See, @blankfist, it isn't nearly as settled as you think it is that a clear excerpt of a longer vid is a dupe or not.

Certainly the person who duped my excerpt thinks it is a dupe. Campion thinks it is a dupe. You don't. Gwiz doesn't. Bone doesn't. And I don't.

Who knows how everyone else feels about it.

Now what do we do? There is a clear and profound difference of opinion on this.

And someone had to work really hard to find the dupe.

How so? There are only 5 Julia Sweeney videos on this site.
Anyways, that mormon video is clearly a dupe of the longer one.

NICE! It only works on about half of the sites I've tried it on (and not Hulu, unfortunately) but that's still pretty damn sweet. I can can finally watch Daily Show clips! Thanks, campion.

Sounds like the port might not actually be blocked. I haven't actually followed the step described to block it since I just used my firewall which was alot easier, but Hulu.com works fine. Also be sure to disable your Ad blocker.

Ubuntu?
Yeah, I'll just do that. Because you know, I don't need things like Adobe CS4/5, Logic Audio, Pro Tools, Ableton Live, Max/MSP, Final Cut, Color, Motion, Lightroom and basically every other piece of software I use for my professional and fun purposes.
After scanning around some Ubuntu forums and finding out just what a nightmare it is to run any of my required software, I called a friend @ JPL, and one at Oracle to ask if my summation was correct, and they said "for what you need, Ubuntu makes zero sense". Yep, there you go campion.
Why are we talking about Ubuntu? Oh right, to show that we don't need sweatshops to live our wetern lifestyles. Which for me, (aside from about 1/2 the tech I own) is absolutely true.
I work from home, my GF takes mass transit. We have a massive garden where we get most of our food from. We buy all other food from locally grown, sustainable sources (mostly south central farmers market). We make all of our own cleaning agents, use soap nuts for washing clothes, recycle all water, harvest rainwater, solar dry food, hardly ever use a heater, have no A/C or central air. We use canvas bags to shop with, compost 100% of all food waste, recycle or reuse all plastic/paper/glass etc. Our combined trash for a full month is 1/2 of a normal small plastic bag.
I DO NOT buy Nike products, have never bought anything from WalMart, don't buy fastfood (aside from the ocassional In-n-Out) and we both study the source where all of our merch is made. In this ugly web of global corporate confusion, it's not always easy to find out where every piece of every camera or MIDI controller or PS3 you buy comes from.
It is very easy to "vote with my wallet" although I am not so naive to think it makes a dent on the big picture. But a lot of people would rather just scream "just buy Ubuntu and the world is saved" that's a load of bullshit.

Ubuntu. If you need it, write it. That's how Linux works.

I know I could google, and I will, but what are your tips for making your own cleaning products as I'm quite interested in doing that.

Mothers Sick Punishment For Bad Grades (Dark Talk Post)

The Sift needs a GUITAR channel (User Poll by guitarwolf)

Shepppard says...

Campions arguments seem solid to me.

Why do we need a guitar only channel?

Sure, some videos feature only guitar, but there's also some that are strictly Ukulele, drums, or any assortment of string instrument. Guitar is an intergral part of "Music" on the whole, So if a video has a guitar in it, it's automatically "Music", same goes for any instrument.

Defining a music by it's Genre is more sensible, RocknRoll, Jazz, Bravo (For classical), makes more sense. Even if we do create a "Guitar" channel, why would we stop there, Why wouldn't we make "Drums" "Ukulele" or "Violin" as channels? The answer, is because eventually it would just get silly.

I say just stick to defining musical videos by * Music, and *genre. Adding a type of instrument to anything with * Music is redundant.

I voted yes, but campion is righteous in his observations, eh? Tell ya what, fellow strummer....may I? Make a website dedicated just that. I tried an accordion channel, it did not work out so well.

By the by, bang for the buck-wise, I have decided that the guitar to use as the primary care giver for myself, to be the Gibson SG...Out of the box, perfection but a bit of tweaking in the hands of a smitty, n she'll give ya hours of unadulterated pleasure-I like the effects package of the Digitech EX-7 expression factory pedal, though the functionality of an everything-in-one pedal is a frikkin live-music nightmare....you simply can't beat the individual spread of the palatalized gearbox.

My second choice for guitar would be a resonator , one that fits yer particular style of pickin' and pressure...try a Johnson or a Dean. Oh and, the warm glow of the tube amp, only. The Marshall has gotten better and better with the solid-state/tube combos...try a Vintage Modern 2266C, for all yer ear-bludgeoning needs.

Alas, I have lost my gear this last year to pawn....another reason to forego nitrous oxide and cocaine, until you become liberated from the bonds of the devil, money....or I mean, forever.

Does Videosift fulfill Shneirderman's 8 Golden rules of UI? (Blog Entry by Farhad2000)

nibiyabi says...

My take:

1. Pretty much, yeah.
2. Hmm, not really, although campion's greasemonkey app to click on invocations is really handy. However, if we want to remove a video from a channel, it remains an incredibly involved process, e.g., *nochannel *catsanddogs *nature *comedy *timeshift *wtf *dark to remove *fear instead of just having *remove=fear. Also, having to navigate to another page to post a comment is silly.
3. I guess so, sure.
4. These are getting a bit vague, but sure.
5. This was fine until *dupeof. I still think we are better off with it than without, but there should be an easy way to undo it (I'm not saying this would be easy).
6. This is the same as #5, no?
7. A+
8. Sure.

Getting Ready for VideoSift 4.1 (Sift Talk Post)

Sarzy says...

-Perhaps one of the rotating panels could be a random batch of older videos. Or KP's idea for a random promote for older videos. The way the site is designed now, there are so many great videos that essentially no one gets to see unless they're specifically searching for them, or unless a member promotes them. It would be nice if older videos could get highlighted somehow.

-I recall a while back that campion had come up with a system where, when someone invoked something, instead of a whole new comment, siftbot's response would be nested within the invoker's comment. That seemed like a much better/cleaner way to do things. I don't know if it's possible to implement that for the whole site, but it definitely seems like it would be an improvement.
