liberty and virtue and the freedom to choose

ChaosEngine says...

There are plenty of times when I've had both the means and motivation to kill someone. What stopped me? Yeah, I didn't want to go to jail, but primarily I stopped myself because I know that killing someone is wrong and that cutting me off in traffic is not a morally justifiable reason for murder.

As for your marriage, that's a perfect example of how your argument falls apart. Are you telling me that there would be no repercussions on your life if you got caught cheating on your wife? Because unless your wife would just roll her eyes and go "oh asexymind, you and your crazy extramarital affairs", you are being coerced and therefore your decision to not sleep with all the women lining up outside your door is not virtuous.

Just because there are negative consequences to an action, doesn't mean that not performing that action isn't the virtuous path.

But bloody hell, do we need those negative consequences! You only have to look at the finance industry to see how people behave when there are no repercussions.

We don't live in an abstract philosophical conundrum where people will be moral "if we just give them the chance!!!"

We live in a world that has been ceaselessly fucked over by the powerful. Where the poor get exploited and the environment gets destroyed because the majority of those in power (and I don't mean politicians, I mean the people with power) are complete psychopaths, in the clinical sense of the word. If we didn't have government rules, you'd still be working on the weekend and your kids would be working with you.

ChaosE - This may be a matter of semantics and definitions. Depending on how you define the terms, I agree with your point.

And, in moral philosophy, if it is not your _choice_, it is not an ethical choice. Sorry if this is philosophical bullshit, but think about it: your "not killing someone" because you don't have the motivation or means is not a virtuous choice, it is simply not NOT an unethical one. It is the lack of a negative, not the presence of a positive. Virtue is about our choices, not our defaults.

I am married and monogamy is part of my commitment. If no other woman would deign to sleep with me, my not sleeping with them is no indication of my virtue. It is only in the face of propositions to which I say "no" that I am exercising the virtue of fidelity.

Bloody hell. That horrifies me to see that little boy mauled like that.

As amazing as that pussy is, I think my cat would probably just sit there and yawn during the attack.

Bloody hell, .905 is what, 23mm? Better put some shock absorbing butt plate on that sucker or it'll split you in half.

Kinda reminds me of that old Finnish AT rifle, the Lahti.

Even though Dante stated that the hottest place in hell shall be reserved for those who maintain neutrality in times of moral crisis, I submit that spokespeople for the ministry of propaganda are just as deserving to be poked by the robot devil's trident for all eternity.

Rape Joke Debate

bareboards2 says...

@Shepppard, could you take the time to read my post about murder jokes rather than rape jokes? See if that doesn't scare you like (some) rape jokes do most women.

And why are women scared about rape jokes like Tosh's?

Because we life in a society that doesn't recognize that there are loads of uncaught and unconvicted kiiling-for-thrill murderers, and the very real danger is not recognized NOR fought back against.

There is nothing wrong with a rape joke in a world where there is no fear of rape. There is no fear of Hitler. There is no fear of piles of dead babies. And men age 17-25 pay much higher insurance rates than anyone else -- and not because they are great drivers.

And until you get that distinction, then this is a parallel discussion. You can go on and on about freedom of speech, that no one is disagreeing with. And others will continue to try to get you to understand that there is something wrong in our society and until it is faced and addressed, the problem will never be solved.

It isn't about banning rape jokes. It is about understanding how the bloody hell you can think certain rape jokes are funny. Because in my murder scenario, I guarantee you, if you were the person singled out by that hypothetical comic, you would NOT be laughing.

What Is Your Favourite Video Game Music? (Videogames Talk Post)

radx says...

Bloody hell, 56k was expensive as hell. I distinctly remember forking over some 400 bucks once at the end of a month in the late '90s, just for having played some Counter-Strike. Outlaws was even earlier, back when you paid for internet access with gold-pressed latinum.

No, sir, no internet gaming for radx during those days. We hauled our rigs into someone's cellar, then played until we ran out of provisions.

Dude, you are quite wrong. There have been many killing sprees at police stations and military bases. Are you fucking kidding me? You don't remember THE FORT HOOD murders?

I think people are missing the point. Guns are a deterrent. If someone wants to go on a shooting spree, they're not going to do it in a place where they know everyone is armed. That's why we have shooting sprees at schools and businesses instead of police departments or gun shows or firing ranges or military bases. The whole point of a shooting spree is to feel empowered. When you're the only one with a gun, you're in charge. When everybody has a gun, you're no longer in charge. A shooting spree becomes less appealing if you know you'll only get in a few hits before you're taken down. Shooters want to go out on their own terms (hence the suicide at the end of most shooting sprees). Even if the civilians carrying weapons don't have a lot of training, the simple fact that they are all carrying weapons is enough to deter would-be shooters.

If you want to end shooting sprees, enact a law requiring everyone to carry guns. Banning guns only ensures that criminals have them.
