The heart-wrenching agony of VideoSift (Wtf Talk Post)

spoco2 says...

Well, after watching the Single Mum Prostitute song and thinking 'W T F???' I think I can safely say that you do have a taste which is left of center and as such is unlikely to get big hits on videosift I'm afraid. There's funny WTF, and then there's just WTF... and for me, the SMP song was a case of pure WTF. I don't really think being strange for the sake of being strange works, I like there to be some point.

But hey, maybe I'm just Mr Mainstream.

Home Taping is Killing Music

RedSky says...

@rosser99

I think it's impractical to think about it as right and wrong anymore. File sharing isn't going away, policing the internet is never going to be plausible or practical, lawsuits are a drop in the ocean and the measures they're using now with having ISPs in certain countries such as France disconnect you on a 3 strikes rule are bound to be circumvented in one form or another. I mean sure, you can have opinions on it either way, but moral arguments won't change the state of things. The real question should be how should the industry adapt?

What record companies should be doing is slimming down by moving towards internet distribution and promotion, and casting a wider net by relying less on one-hit wonders and more to catering to a broad range of niche audiences that they're losing by the throng. Instead they're going in the opposite direction.

I remember reading a thread in a popular music file-sharing hub by an ex-recording industry professional that back-catalogues and collectors editions are where the real dough is made. Many of the 'artists' (I use the term loosely) will be forgotten and never heard of by the end of the year. Plunging sales have meant that record companies have become more concerned with making the quick buck, extract the one hit, and move on. As a result the vast majority of artists are simply not able to develop their musical talent on big-name record companies over time because they're passed on for the next big hit. Similarly bands that are selected and promoted are the ones that have the most broad and banal appeal. You know, the ones that sound like every generic hip-hop song you've heard in last 3 years, the ones that have strippers prancing around during the entire video clip. The problem is, there's a sizable group of people who no longer have any interest in laying down money for this disposable music.

The successful ones are also generally bled dry nowadays. It used to be that live performances and merchandise profits were entirely or mostly in the purview of the artist, now that record companies are having their purse strings tightening, they're extending their contracts to include chips out of these earnings too. It'll be hard to tell what this environment will eventually lead to in terms of mainstream music progression. I think it's inevitable though that the likes of iTunes (which has more or less already adopted this model) will begin to dominate. Perhaps at that point we will see some kind of turning point.

As far as I'm concerned the ability to sample music has meant that I've been able to discover some great bands, and had the opportunity to buy their albums (I tend to buy in 10+ bulk orders every so often) and otherwise support them by going to see their shows. It has also meant that I've only paid good money for albums that stand the test of time and have been able to support bands that genuinely need the monetary support to continue their endeavor rather than reward big-name labels for their exorbitant ad campaigns.

So YEAH! I challenge you to read all that

Hey rottenwhorerpictureseed, I love your latest collaboration with blankfist

Who knew blankfist had such a great rack? Sorry I missed your recent diamond acquisition. I'm sure your rock is a big hit at the glory hole. I honestly had intended to do the post myself, but I had other shit interfere with my Sift presence. I even shopped a picture for the occasion, but alas, it is a wee bit too late. Will you settle for a handjob from joedirt? I could smack him around a little bit, just for you.

The Yes Men Fix The World - Trailer

legacy0100 says...

I would guess that they're a big hit in countries with high Anti-American political atmosphere in public, such as Europe.

If they pulled this kind of stunt in United State they would get sued so royally it would take them 20 lifetimes to pay off the debt.

Anyways, these guys are performers. And when was the last time I took an art student's political views seriously? Oh that's right, never.

Yeah, I also kind of expected that video to do better than it did. The sift is really unpredictable sometimes. I still have a hard time predicting what's going to be a big hit and what's going to be a dud.

In reply to this comment by jonny:
Yay! It made it, even with the downvote first. I'm really surprised it didn't do better. I guess you have to be in a fairly small age range that would have enjoyed Saturday morning Popeye cartoons.

And welcome back!

Thanks jonny! Hopefully it'll make it through this time.

Guy Has the Chillest Bad Trip on Salvia

dannym3141 says...

You're right westy. I've tried salvia before. It did absolutely fuck all to me, i just sat there wondering when it would start. Manned up, took another few big hits and didn't get anything.

My friend was sat there giggling her head off, said she was at a party 3 feet behind her own head and she was looking at me from a distance, she came forward to get me and bring me to the party and that was the end of her trip. She apparently said she consciously moved out of the party forward into her own head again to get me and bring me along.

Also, several times i've been the control subject, making sure people are ok whilst taking salvia (safety first kids), and i've brought people out of the trip by just touching them, calling them.

This guy is taking the hit and then looking nervous saying "this is bad!" no wonder he's gonna have a bad trip!

Sarah Palin as VP? (Election Talk Post)

NetRunner says...

I think I can understand the logic that went into Palin.

She's a big hit with the Bill Kristol set, because she's young, attractive, well-spoken, has a great biography, she's not an old white man, and she's a hardline neoconservative ideologue.

She's a Karl Rove style pick with a twist -- she'll comfort the people who're devastated that Bush can't just stay President forever, plus they think she has a chance to drive a wedge into the (in their mind) deeply divided Democratic party over women's issues.

They also believe that Hillary won't come out and hit Palin with a chainsaw over issues, because they're absolutely convinced that Hillary wants Obama to lose.

So the bullet points they gain are:

  • Energize the "base" of evangelicals, and social conservatives
  • Get a press buzz to focus on this "Fresh new face", to combat Obama on that front.
  • Appeal to socially conservative women who want a woman in the White House
  • Be able to say "see, we're not a bunch of sexists and racists after all"

What they lose is:

  • The ability to hammer home Obama as not being experienced enough (Palin's resume is thinner than Obama's)
  • The ability to reinforce the importance of National Security (since Palin has 0 experience with that)

That has me a little concerned, because in my analysis that means that the McCain campaign is going to totally detach from issues that matter (like experience), and go into total smear-merchant mode.

They've already made the shift, since there's now a spate of ads talking about William Ayers running here in Ohio, joining the ads that just flat out lie about Obama's tax plan (saying he'll raise your taxes if you make more than $42,000, which isn't true).

I expect the RNC convention to spend the entire time driving home baseless smears about patriotism, muslim, Wright, Ayers, and maybe we'll get to hear about the guy who claimed he had gay sex with Obama from the mouths of "serious" people.

I also expect that most of the positive stuff will focus on Palin's biography, and McCain's record as a P.O.W., and only Lieberman will talk about the bipartisan stuff.

I don't know if it'll work, but that's my prediction as an armchair strategist.
