blade runner-2049-sneak peek

newtboy says...

You're probably right, but enough costly redux flops will eventually stop future waves of nothing but rehashed movies....maybe.

For me, they don't destroy the memories but do tarnish them. I can't think of Evil Lord Vader without also thinking of little orphan Anni now. I can't watch Indiana Jones kicking ass without remembering how he was totally (figuratively) ass raped in the last movie. It certainly takes something from the purer memories of my youth to have the stories and characters pimped out for $15.

It wouldn't matter how badly it fails, it would only affect further Blade Runner movies. You'll still end up with a Treasure of the Sierra Madre remake, directed by Michael Bay.
Personally I've never understood the whole concept of remakes destroying people's memories of the originals, Blade Runner was, is, and always will be awesome.

The Daily Show - Barack Obama extended interview

Trancecoach says...

Obama says, “The real scandal around the IRS is that they have been so poorly funded that they cannot go after these folks who are deliberately avoiding tax payments.”

Hm.. but what about the scandal last year in which the IRS was revealed to have paid $2.8 million in bonuses to employees that had been cited in the past year for such virtuous behavior as drug use, making violent threats, fraudulently claiming unemployment benefits, misusing government credit cards and failing to pay their own taxes.

But the President blames the funding? Ok.

I guess he's trying to divert attention away from the new report (PDF) by The Annie E. Casey Foundation (and cited by USA Today) which shows that there are now more children currently living in poverty (22%) than there were during the Great Recession (18%).

bronx man beaten and arrested on video for no charge

The vast majority of people never have contact with police officers.

The vast majority of people who HAVE contact with police officers are treated civilly and go on with their lives.

The vast majority of people know that you don't give a bunch of shit to police officers. If you do, you take a chance on an outcome that won't make you happy.

The vast majority of people who are arrested on a weekly basis know that they will pay a small fine, or do a couple of days in jail, and take it as a cost of doing business.

A small number of police contacts end up with someone being treated for a bruise or cut, or a loose tooth, or pepper spray in the eyes.

A small number of police contacts end up dead and the vast majority of them instigated the violence.

You people expect cops to act perfectly, have the negotiating skills of Henry Kissinger, the compassion of Mother Theresa and the patience of Job, the martial skill of a UFC fighter, and the targeting skill of Annie Oakley, when what you should be doing is looking at your own behavior and seeing how that leads to your own fate.

Aunt Annie's poem is along the lines of:

I were sitting on me arse last evening,

Me Mother and Father were off,

Cuz they'd heard, me old Nan Susanna were laid up in bed with a cough

She has some brasses me old Nan Susannah;

That's reason she's looked after so

If they've nought, well they're nought but a bother.

Here's an example - me old Uncle John.

Atomic Cannon test-fires a "baby" nuke

radx says...

I was just about to question the listed weight of the projectile as well.

The main armament of the Scharnhorst-class battlecruisers had the same calibre and fired shells weighing in at around 250kg, so I figured Atomic Annie to be in the same ball park. Even the eggs Dora lobbed around were only about 7t apiece.

Although it takes the fun out of the process, WP lists the weight at 364kg.

Alison Brie reenacts internet memes

lucky760 says...

It gets under my skin when people call them JIFs. They're GIFs.

Alison Brie is the awesomest. She's such a sport (even miming very explicit sexual acts). She's sort of like a cleaned-up version of Olivia Munn.

[edit]
Now I'm confused. In the Unsexy GIFs video he actually asks how GIF should be pronounced and says he pronounces it GIF. Why then in this video does he say JIF? Is that some kind of joke?
