25 Random things about me... (Blog Entry by youdiejoe)

JAPR says...

1. I was raised Mormon, but got fed up with it by junior high and officially dropped it when I moved out for college.

2. I grew up on the West, but not quite the West Coast (hooray Nevada and Idaho).

3. Speaking of Idaho, I don't like potatoes as much as people assume I would.

4. The only non-Republican in my immediate family, but I wouldn't consider myself a Democrat, either. Rather, I decline from choosing a party and prefer to focus on who would be a better candidate overall, as best as I can tell.

5. I used to sing in choir all the way from sixth grade up until the end of Freshman year in college.

6. I actually missed a chance to sing at Carnegie hall with the choir here because I quit it, as well as the opportunity to go to Europe.

7. My sort-of-secret dream is to become a musician, but I'm nowhere close to good enough for that yet.

8. I play guitar and sing, and while my guitaring is starting to get decent, the lack of formal practice with singing since quitting choir has caused my technical abilities in singing to go down.

9. I own a DS and play Pokemon sometimes. Because that game series never really stopped rocking.

10. My favorite video game ever is Chrono Trigger.

11. I am a cat-lover, but am fine with dogs as well.

12. I prefer physical CDs to digital purchases, and currently own over 120 CDs, which I didn't really start purchasing until about three years ago.

13. I only buy CDs without checking them out by downloading first if it's one of my favorite artists and I'm convinced that it's going to be good.

14. I study Japanese, and recently received a rating of "Advanced-low" on the ACTFL Proficiency scale, mostly due to not having devoted any time to studying vocabulary this past semester.

15. My goal is to achieve "Advanced-high" by the end of the year and "Superior" by the time I graduate.

16. My parents see me as a bad influence on my siblings.

17. I drink a lot, and good Belgian ale and German hefeweizen.

18. I don't really smoke, though I have tried it a few times.

19. JAPR are actually my initials.

20. The "A," which is the name I go by, was my Great-Grandfather's middle name, which he went by as well.

21. I have yet to own a car.

22. I spend more money on guitar equipment and CDs than I do on books for classes.

23. I am a habitual procrastinator.

24. I love VideoSift even when it is exactly what I should avoid when I have a deadline for a paper.

25. I still have absolutely no clue what I want to do with my life.

Feist "When I Was A Young Girl"

calvados says...

When I Was A Young Girl
This song is performed by Feist and appears on the album Let It Die (2004).

When I was a young girl I used to seek pleasure
When I was a young girl I used to drink ale
Out of the ale house down into the jail house
My body's salvation and Hell is my doom

Come mama come papa and sit you down by me
Come sit you down by me and pity my case
My poor head is aching my sad heart in breaking
My body's salvation and hell is my doom

Please send for the preacher to come and pray for me
And send for the doctor to heal all my wounds
My poor head is aching my sad heart in breaking
My body's salvation and I'm bound to die

One morning one morning one morning in May
I saw this young lady all wrapped in white linen
All wrapped in white linen and called out "the plague"

The Great VideoSift Coming -Out Thread (Happy Talk Post)

Ornthoron says...

Hi, my name is Arvid, and I live in Oslo, Norway. I have just finished a degree in physics from the University of Oslo, but I can't seem to let go of the student life just yet. I enjoy sifts that mess with my head, such as these.

I discovered VideoSift because Fedquip kept referring to it on his old AOL blog. I lurked here for over a year before finally signing up this autumn. For a norwegian, I have an almost unhealthy interest in american politics, and I deeply regret the decline and death of http://newsbloggers.aol.com.

On my freetime I am a musician. I have played the Euphonium since I was eight, but have in recent years switched mostly to Trombone. I mostly play and listen to jazz, first and foremost in a Big Band. I was a member of a now dead 30's swing band, and I am soon starting a new band to play some more modern jazz. I sing in a choir as well. My muscial heroes are among others Bach and Bartok, Carla Bley and Steve Swallow, Pink Floyd and Steely Dan.

I read both fantasy and classics, and my favourite authors are Kurt Vonnegut jr., George R. R. Martin, Tolkien, Dostoyevski and Gert Nygårdshaug. My username is a witness to my geeky past, as it is the Sindarin translation of my real name.

I catch onto minor hobbies sporadically as well. I used to game a lot, but this has cooled off lately. I was an avid Guitar Hero player, and got to be pretty good. I have been into sailing. I have been into fencing. I enjoy walking and skiing in the majestic norwegian mountainscape. In the summer I play with the Diabolo. My latest fad is Origami, which I used to do when I was a teenager and have just now picked up again. I have also been an extra in some norwegian music videos and minor film productions. I am the emo-looking guy playing accordion in this video.

I follow both norwegian and international politics with interest, and I have a blog in norwegian about politics and science which I update very sporadically.

Oh, and I am the older brother of Haldaug, who has a higher integrity as a sifter than me. That is why I have higher ranking than him, even though he has been a member longer than me. So go to his pqueue if you want to find some musical/thoughtful/absurd gems.

edit: Forgot to mention my favourite beverage, Brakspear Oxford Gold organic ale. Try it out.

The Coup - We Are the Ones

MrFisk says...

We - we are the ones
We'll seal your fate, tear down your state, go get yo' guns
We - we came to fight
It's yo' disgrace, smash up your place, that's just polite

Once upon a time when crack was gold
And hip-hop was not yet platinum sold
I scoured the streets for stacks to fold
My mood like my hair was relaxed and blowed
I hated police and my teachers were beasts
My heat in the trunk of the classic Caprice
The one university, I knew the deal
So I cooked it, bagged it, put it on sale
Now philosophically you'd be opposed
to one inhaling coke via mouth or the nose
But economically I would propose
that you go eat a dick as employment froze
And I felt like an abandoned child
Left to fend for myself in the wild
While every courtroom, judge and gavel
were there to bury me under the gravel
Or at the bottom of the finest malt ale
Observe; you'll find without fail
That in every neighborhood and penitentiary
There exists many others who are similar to me and

We - we are the ones
We'll seal your fate, tear down your state, go get yo' guns
We - we came to fight
It's yo' disgrace, smash up your place, that's just polite

In later years I lost some peers
Who mixed burners with Belvedere
And took shots from gung-ho cashiers
The world was cold yet hell was near
So I seek for a kilo
And my stack got a little bit taller like Skee-Lo
A street CEO
There was all of this hell well and not one hero
The intensity was fortified
As I clenched five digits on the forty-five
Barely down at the retail store I would detail more
But I don't wish this action to be glorified
There was a plan I was eager to listen
To not sleep in the park in the fetal position
Having to wipe off canine fecal emission
Otherwise I'd survive without legal permission
It's an equal division and then we go to prison, which is a little decision
All I wanted was a Regal to glisten
And my kids would have meat in the kitchen and complete ammunition
It's a given once the people are driven that

We - we are the ones
We'll seal your fate, tear down your state, go get yo' guns
We - we came to fight
It's yo' disgrace, smash up your place, that's just polite

Get your work up! Get your work up!

We are born from the mildew, the rust, the heathenous lust
The dreams in the dust, the evidence flushed
The grieving is just, they're thieving from us
Insulted and cussed, this evening we bust
Appears unstable and under the table
We like free speech but we love free cable
We're taught from the cradle the Bill Gates fable
Which leads to high speeds in Buick LeSables
We have no excuses just great alibis
And poker faces you can't analyze
Our politicians sell our soul and our cries
With blood on their hands they can't sanitize
We're the have-nots, but we're also the gon'-gets
Not just talkin 'bout the Lex with the chrome kits
You can get that by yourself with the four-fifth
Let's all own shit then toast with Patron hits

Good Eats - The Beer Show

drattus says...

>> ^Trancecoach:
is anyone gonna comment on the video itself? I for one enjoyed this vid. Not that I presently have the resources to try it out myself, but I'd love to in the future and I support anyone who does -- I'll show my appreciation in consumption. <hic>

Sure. I brewed for a couple of years back in the 80s, never had a bad batch though I did have some that were better than others. I liked a good India Pale Ale which was easy enough to do without refrigeration, more complex than some with the added crystal malts and such but it was worth the effort.

Main reason I stopped was because we had kids and got more animals. It's supposed to be kept quiet, cool and still for a while and we had no place in the house that was any of them for more than hours at a time. If you love beer and can keep it *clean* it's worth the effort though. Cut a corner on keeping it clean and you might as well save your time.

Another connection between Death and Drinking...

MINK says...

it's a british generic friendly lads accent with no detectable regionality, perfect for advertising.

the reason it sounds a bit ozzy is probably because the last line is a question, and as we all know, every oz sentence ends with a question mark. and the actor is trying to be all casual and laddish.

btw, IPA (india pale ale) was specially developed so it could be transported to india without going bad. Empire, what what. Now you know.

and yes, british ads are better than american ads, but this one only needed 20 seconds. i hate 40 second ads that repeat the joke a million times.

Cheese Addiction (Food Talk Post)

raven says...

MMmmm.... nice rarebit recipe Choggie! Although if yer feelin' lazy, I can recommend a similar equivalent... Welsh Red Dragon Cheese... its a cheddar with the ale and the mustard already mixed in... OMG so good! I know Whole Foods carries it... really the only reason I ever go there is for the cheese and olives, can't beat their selection I'm sad to say.

Other tasty cheeses I adore: Spanish Manchengo, a nice soft Port Salute, a slightly warmed Camembert, Drunken Goat, extra Aged Gouda, and this delicious Goat Chevre made by a local goat farm... oh it is heaven indeed!

Cheese Addiction (Food Talk Post)

choggie says...

There is no cheese that I would not eat, few that I have not eaten, and none that is so stinky that I would not spread it on anything suitable and chow.

a nice wheel a Gouda smoked slow next to the BBQ, and eaten while waiting for the carne.....mmmmmmmmmmmmm!

Welsh Rarebit:
Ingredients

* 25g Butter
* 150ml Welsh ale-(use milk, if you don't want to have trippy dreams)
* 175g mature Welsh farmhouse Cheese (you can replace this with the sharpest cheddar you prefer-(NO SUBSTITUTES FOR SHARPNESS!)-meaning no poncy chesse you happen to have lying about
* 25g Flour
* 1/2 tsp prepared mild Mustard (Coleman's is best)
* 2 egg yolks
* 4 slices bread

Method

1. Place the butter, milk or ale and cheese in a saucepan and heat gently until melted and smooth in consistency.

2. Stir in the flour, and bring the mixture to the boil, stirring constantly.

3. Remove from the heat and add the mustard and seasoning. Leave to cool for 5 minutes, then whisk in the eggs.

4. Toast the bread on one side, turn over and divide the rarebit mixture between the slices.

5. Place under a hot grill and cook until bubbling and golden.
Welsh rarebit is traditionally served on toast, sometimes with a poached egg on top. Many chefs have taken to using the rarebit mixture for more adventurous dishes such as a topping for fillet of Welsh beef, or cod. It's ideal as a vegetarian dish and is exceptionally good poured over roasted vegetables, then baked in the oven until golden.
You can add various flavourings to the rarebit base such as herbs, fresh chilli, garlic, cooked leeks, chopped ham

Perfectionist's note: Welsh Rarebit is a stand-alone affair-a good sourdough is best-Her starter's activity, together with the beer's yeast and other constituent's, the actives in the cheese, the mustard, have produced repeatable mildly psychoactive, nocturnal effects when eaten on an empty stomach, just prior to bed.-choggie hasn't made this in a number of years-djsunkid is about to, and tell us all about his whacky night-moves......

How It's Made - Beer

How It's Made - Beer

The overall off-topic thread (Sift Talk Post)

swampgirl says...

Sambuca? Curious. Swamp is fresh out of that Can't say I've tried it. I have never thought of mixing beer with anything. My husband would faint at the sight Have you tried Kentucky bourbon? Straight of course, but you may chase it with a coke.

Snipe and I were having a nice chat about Belgian beers 3.0 launch night. Ales are quite different than lagers, but worth the effort

No more geeks? (Sift Talk Post)

No more geeks? (Sift Talk Post)

dag says...

Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)

Funny story on this- originally we were planning on calling the channel "tech", but then a sharp sifter mentioned that "geek" has a broader appeal, because it can cover Star Wars, Trek- D&D etc.

So we changed it to Geek, right when we first launched channels. Somewhere in one of the DB settings- the "tech" channel name was left behind, and the geek channel somehow got transmogrified back to "tech" in VS 3.0. We each thought that one of us made an admin call to change it to "tech", but turns out that's not the case. So back to Geek it goes.

Yay - geeks let us rejoice - Romulan ale for for all!
