Full Throttle - Most Badass Game Ending Ever

Kevlar says...

Yes yes yes. Full Throttle was the perfect antidote to a genre quickly growing stale in the mid 90s - the Adventure Game. The mechanics of the Adventure Game had become little more than an exercise in "click every screen, save every item, MacGyver together some random items to beat puzzles" before Full Throttle kicked them in the teeth. Yes, almost literally - Full Throttle's first screen required you to punch your way out of a dumpster, kick down a door, and use a giant nose ring as a handle, using just two commands, as a clear indictment of the silliness the Adventure Game had taken on.

It was brilliant, straightforward, and memorable. Full Throttle 2 should not have been canceled.

I should probably thank them for my early exposure to adventure games with Kings Quest and Space Quest. We never got away with Leisure Suit Larry at school though

I think the LucasArts games overtook Sierra though when it came to point and click... in particular Sam n Max Hit the Road was I thought a stellar game at the time.

That sounded alot like Not-Yahtzee
Who are you and what have you done with my Yahtzee??

I was finding that to, I immediately stopped the video, there is no reason to watch it.

>> ^NetRunner:
Several people have mentioned that Yahtzee didn't rip this game a new asshole. There's a reason for that, see.

It's good.

I highly recommend it to people who like single player action-adventure games.

Or it's because it's not yahtzee.

Jesus vs, youve let me down. This got upvoted to the top15? THIS pile of crap? The VGA adventure game look (This is neither 8 bit nore 16 bit. It is a low resolution animation style much closer to the PC VGA adventure game erra) was nice but every second of watching this made me feel dumber and dumber.

No one actually enjoys the gameplay of adventure games, but the old Lucas Arts games were funny and entertaining enough to make up for it.

Yeah requiring the player to use some brain cells is really lame isn't it?

Actually, I thought it was rather like psychonauts in that the gameplay wasn't all that great, but you're distracted from that by the excellent setting, humor and art. Come to think of it, that was always true of his adventure games too. No one actually enjoys the gameplay of adventure games, but the old Lucas Arts games were funny and entertaining enough to make up for it.

If only this game were longer, more varied, more creative, and had a few more likable and interesting characters it would rank up there with his previous work. One problem was that they were so interested in paying homage to the Metal that half of the noteworthy characters were voiced by old drug addled musicians who speak in s sort of mumbling monotone. Yes, Ozzy isn't the only one.

He makes a reference to Under a Killing Moon, that was an awesome adventure game with spectacular graphics for its time! Loved it.

Yeah, I have fond memories of those too, I remember paying a couple hundred dollars to buy 4 more megabytes of RAM so I could play Under a Killing Moon in all it's glory. But there have actually been 5 Tex Murphy games so far. If you're feeling super nostalgic, the sequel to Under a Killing Moon, The Pandora Directive, was just as good. And the creators have hinted this year at a revival of the series.

Any gamers in the crowd? (Blog Entry by JiggaJonson)

Ornthoron says...

I've always been a PC gamer too, but I've played a lot less since I started sifting. Go figure. I thoroughly enjoy the Half-Life series including Portal, but in my heart I'll always be a point-and-click adventure gamer. I've played most of what LucasArts published back when they were good, such as Full Throttle, The Dig and every Monkey Island game. I'm excited about the new Monkey Island game that's coming up, and the remake of the first game. And Grim Fandango is obviously a huge favourite, as you can tell from my avatar.

The last decade has been a sad period for the adventure genre, but Telltale Games has some good stuff going now, i.e. with the new Sam&Max episodes. I also loved The Longest Journey and its sequel Dreamfall, and am eagerly awaiting a new sequel. (Do you hear that, Funcom?) I'm a sucker for good storytelling, so I might expand my horizon to Mass Effect, which I've heard good stuff about.

Another good adventure game that I think has been overlooked is the Bladerunner game from 1997. It captures the mood from the movie brilliantly, and was very replayable due to the non-linear storyline.

A few years ago I bought a PS2 solely to be able to play Guitar Hero, and I got to be rather good at it. But I haven't played it since GH3 now, and I am a bit rusty. After I bought the console my flatmate pressured me into trying Final Fantasy 10, and I enjoyed it for a while until the grinding part became too pronounced. I might continue it some day though. I also bought Bioshock when it came out, but I haven't gotten very far, as I found the character building stuff annoying. I have promised myself to play through it, though.

Other highlights from my gaming career: Diablo 2 and the expansion, the single player campaign of Starcraft and the expansion, Jedi Knight (aka Dark Forces II) and its sequels, Tie Fighter, Carmageddon, Interstate '76, and Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven.

How Videogamers Are Ruining The Industry They Love

shole says...

i fully agree on game quality these days but unfortunately his ideas on it are just.. not right
i don't care enough to go on a corrective rant about it though

but.. i always acquire my games from teh internets with illicit means and if i like what i play, i buy it
most times when i get the game box i don't even install it cos the warezed copy already works fine (and better, without drm slowing it down and corrupting my windows)
but i buy it all the same cos i feel good paying for something that made me feel good

this also extends to indie games, and incentive to buy is adjusted by price it has
but with indie games also breed trust and loyalty between the company and consumer
they're usually very small companies.. two to ten people or so.. so people feel more comfortable buying from them even without playing it

like how zombie cow released ben there, dan that for free, and i loved it, and it's equally brilliant sequel time gentlemen, please was $5
you would have to be a pretty cold bastard not to buy it on the spot if you liked the first one, knowing it's by the same two people, in the same vein

budget for these was literally zero, and they're better adventure games than i have played in years
no huge budget and financing required.. indie projects like this just need an open market to put stuff on and get seen by people
