Porsche-powered Karmann Ghia

newtboy says...

100% guaranteed it's not the only one of it's kind. Porsche stuff is almost a direct bolt in replacement for VW parts, I raced a VW powered buggy and it used Porsche parts.
It may have a few modifications that are unique, but the overall idea is far from new. I've seen V-8s swapped into VWs.
It needs front and side spoilers to reach his claimed speeds with any control. I think that's a theoretical top speed.

That distinctive Porsche sound too....(cue dryer full of empty paint cans.)

Testing the ice

nanrod says...

When I was cub scout age in Calgary a guy from the left hand side of the normal distribution decided to test the safety of the ice on the Glenmore Resevoir by driving his VW Beetle onto it. It was safe for skating but not for cars.

Ever See a CT Scanner at Full Speed?

The mass in the neighborhood of 1800 lbs.

I've always thought of it as a VW spinning around one body.
You have the Xray tube on 1 side and its detector on the other along with a heat ex-changer for the tube and then other assemblies.

Ive worked on Cath labs and have few times helped replacing tubes and installing these systems. Fun stuff.

So, I guess they need to keep that rotating mass fairly well balanced.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Has A Blunt Message For Nazis

JustSaying says...

BASF is a huge german corporation that produced Zyklon B, the gas used in Ausschwitz to kill thousands of people. They're still going strong. It is by far not the only german corporation that benefitted greatly from the Holocaust. Take IBM for example, they delivered card-computing systems to manage concentration camp popula... Oh shit! IBM is american, my bad.
The Bundeswehr, the german military, was run by Nazi Generals in its early years. Just this year there were several scandals concerning Neo Nazis among their ranks.
A lot of people benefited from the atrocities of the third Reich. Don't kidd yourself. Remember, Hitler hired Ferdinand Porsche to develop the Volkswagen. The development of the VW Beetle was started by the Fuehrer.

BTW....because you seem confused, no one ever was forced under penalty of death to keep slaves, and very few Nazi's families benefited after the fact from having been Nazis....it's not the same thing by far.

Audi Super Bowl 2017 Commercial

If people are free (to work and make money) and markets are free (to sell european cars in the US eithout excessive tariffs) Volkswagen can sell more cars and make more money. So yeah, human rights matter.

That way they also create more jobs and pay more towards pensions and have money to make Superbowl ads, possibly the most expensive "free publicity" in the world.

Not the worlds' moral standard setters though, obviously, VW.

Smarter Everyday - How Engines Work

newtboy says...

I used what we called a semi-hemi cut on my racing VW motor. It was pretty close to the Chrysler picture at the end of the wiki page. It's a 1776cc, but I was repeatedly accused of it being a 2180 because of the power it put out. Just a little milling improved the flow immensely.

Payback said:

The weird thing is just about everyone makes a "Hemi" head for their engines, and mostly Dodge uses Hemi as a brand name.

Nice.
I wish they paid more attention to the combustion chamber. Most people don't know what a hemi is beyond a powerful motor. The hemispherical combustion chamber produces far more power than a normally shaped one. Even partial hemispherical combustion chambers (semi-hemi) can seriously increase the power of most motors....but also decreases the fuel efficiency.
I use a semi-hemi cut 1776 VW motor in my race buggy, and it outperforms much larger motors.

Don't Tell Mummy!

enoch says...

my dad used to own a 1965 GTO.
that car was a BEAST,and he would do the very same thing when i was around this little girls age.

oh the joy of being pinned to the seat to the deafening growl of the engine, and watching the trees whip by at,what seemed to my little eyes, warp speed.

seatbelts?
what seatbelts?
didn't come standard with a GTO,and who needed em?
(maybe they did and they were just jammed so thoroughly into the cracks of the seats that we didn't even know they were there).

and then my mother made my dad trade the GTO in for VW bug,and so began my fathers slow decline into a suburbia fueled nightmare of mediocrity.

(i kid.he was still pretty fucking awesome).

BMW Concept Bike

eric3579 says...

So i'm obsessing on the piece of electronics @1:18. Id like to figure out exactly what it is model wise. It has Akai VW meters and directional play arrows. I have to assume that it's an Akai cassette deck with auto reverse. Anyone have a clue what model it might be.

I find it odd that in the future they will be using cassette decks
