Antibiotic resistance and evolution

notarobot says...

I did not expect a video about the adaptation of resistance by bacteria would use these recent discoveries as arguments against natural selection.

Most species of bacteria have been around for millions of years (at least). How arrogant would we be if we believed that we would see evidence of new species within a few generations of human record keeping?

Darwin's explanation is still the best anyone has ever come up with, even if it has a few kinks yet to be worked out and perfected.

CERM Starts up, Doesn't end world

GeeSussFreeK says...

It hasn't even been started yet dude. Last time, some super heated mag failed because of a liquid helium leak. We still have a chance to blow ourselves up! heheh

Feb 2009 sometime, though I expect another mishap. It is one of the most complicated machine ever made after all, I would expect several years of kinks.

Intervention with a Video Game Addict

Xax says...

Guy seems like a melodramatic douche, but for his mom to abandon her child for the sake of her career... that's got to put a kink in your emotional development.

This video reeks of know-nothing outsiders who don't seem to know anything about video games or video game addiction.

How to be Punk

peggedbea says...

hey! lets have a music in history thread inspired by how terrible this was
ill start:
after museful consideration i have to say that i agree with homer simpsons assertion that rock attained perfection in 1974 and anything that i can think of is either 1)directly and obviously influenced by something from this era or 2) influenced by something influenced from this era
in 1974 you have: lou reed and the velvet underground, the ny dolls, the kinks, stevie wonder, jackson 5, the rolling stones, frank zappa, patti smith, aretha franklin, david bowie, eric clapton, rod stewart, led zepplin, johnny cash, paul simon, neil young, bob dylan, and the waning days of the beatles... sure really really good things came before, but 74 seems like the perfect blending point of old and new. where the forces that were powerhouses and founding fathers of rock n roll met and mingled with the new wave and poof...

your turn go!

VideoSift v3.3 (Sift Talk Post)

lucky760 says...

Oh, yes, and in regards to the whole wackiness of the new awards system and siftbot's apparent nonsensical comments etc., please be patient with us. This new system is extremely large and complex and there are obviously a lot of strange kinks that need to be worked out. Hopefully it'll all be perfected within a day or two.

Thanks.

What’s up with the YouTube playlist embeds? (Sift Talk Post)

jonny says...

All the clips for the Henry Hill post I mentioned above are available. I seem to remember reading about some changes for YT playlists recently - perhaps they're still working out the kinks?

This is why we ought to be able to create multipart posts here, so that we're not dependent on external players like this. It would also allow clips from different hosts to be playlisted together.

The Kinks sing to you: Bad Day

therealblankman says...

Aaah, the Kinks. My first rock concert was the Kinks, back in '83 I think.

First time I smoked a little grass too.

The Davies brothers? Bigges knobs in the business- make the Gallaghers look like whiny schoolgirls in comparison- which they are, really.

Yael Naim New Soul Song - same song from Apple Mac Air Ad

therealblankman says...

Success is not just measured in Dollars. Integrity and artistic accomplishment should be first on an artist's list. It wasn't that long ago that selling out was seen as a bad thing, rather than a career ambition-which seems to be where it's at today. Remember Neil Young's paean to sell-outs in the music industry "This Note's for You!"?

Hell, some of my favorite musical acts are the most succesful ever- Beatles, Kinks, the Who, Mark Knopfler, the Band etc, etc. Most on that list have at least tried to maintain some integrity, resisting the heavy temptation to schill for one corporation or another. I still enjoy those who have sold out if the work stands up.

I've been a Feist fan for years, I've been a stage hand for Broken Social Scene and Feist solo, and have always thought that she's a very clever song-writer and enjoy her tiny little voice- her vocal stylings bring a certain poignancy to the words. I just am completely nauseated by the constant playing of 1234. This singer- Yael Naim is it? Well, don't know anything about her, but she certainly will sell a lot more records as a result of doing the Apple ad than she would have otherwise- but she most definitely has sold out by doing it in the first place- Neil Young would not approve. That's okay though, the southern man don't need him around anyhow.
