Midwinter in Sweden

What did you get for Christmas? (Blog Entry by dag)

I do love, love, love the AeroPress that I received last week. One shouldn't love a piece of durable plastic this much. Always loved his frisbee as well. The brilliance of the AeroPress design is in its capacity to self-clean.

If you are kettle boiling, listen for the hiss rather than the whistle. I found that water fully boiled in a kettle is far too hot. Or you can scare the family with a screaming kettle and wait about 4-5 minutes.

For easy and fun lattes (if children are involved in the foaming process), invest in a $2 IKEA milk foamer or something slightly more advanced (but cheap) if an IKEA is not nearby. Illy coffee is simply wonderful in the AeroPress.

^ Might be your browser. It's working fine here on Firefox 3.5.2.

I guess it doesn't work in Firefox 3.5.4 then.

Nope, 3.5.4 works fine here.

I have to say the wide proliferation of proprietary flash-based video players kind of sucks. I have a really difficult time with LiveLeak videos especially, they tend to play fine for about 10% of their length, then get caught in a buffer lock- never to recover.

I have a bunch of IKEA stuff and the unfortunate truth is... it does not cost as much, nor weigh as much, and pretty is damn convenient.

Last time I tried to help someone move a piece of real solid wood furniture we suddenly realized why most people have the cheaper stuff now. That damn thing might as well been made out of lead!

Is produce from 'Whole Foods' truly organic?

swedishfriend says...

1st this is about frozen produce which is labeled as being from china. If you shop at a whole foods you are probably the same kind of person who checks the labels (I know I do). All the fresh produce is labeled on the price plaques. 2nd the organic fresh produce sold at whole foods here in Chicago is often cheaper than the pesticide produce at regular grocery stores. I don't see whole foods as a premium store simply because they are generally cheaper at least in my area.

PS. I think it sucks that they don't seem to have better checks on their verification process, especially when dealing with stuff from china. When I worked at IKEA I found that they have a whole division of the company dedicated to worker protection in the various countries they have factories in. Being a Swedish company they would have to be really careful just because of how active the people are politically and human-rights wise in Sweden. Now you would figure Whole Foods would behave similarly knowing who their customers are.

Best Story Ever.

Yes, But I think this is the clincher to the ad - It just made you say it instead of having to tell you. It really is a brilliant script. We all know the Ikea comes in pieces and we have to put it together. The ad never says it, mentions it or even hints at it. But we ALL thought it, and that makes a great commercial!

In our heads is where they want to be!

Pretty funny, but everyone knows IKEA furniture is packed flat. I call BS.

Home Made Wall of Death

Edeot says...

Went to IKEA today. Got a couch of death. Put it up against my wall of death. But it clashes with my rug of death. Looks good next to my endtable of persistent vegetative state, though.
