Why Obama is one of the most consequential presidents ever

Jinx says...

He was really extremely inconsequential for comedians. I remember Bush jokes were practically a genre of their own. Anyway, as a snooty European I am looking forward to again being able to look down by nose and across the Atlantic. Almost 8 years of President Envy is hard, its about time we return to our natural state of smug superiority.

Oh, I'm such a happy Chewbacca!

I found Colbert's question about "unknown knowns" the most interesting, but here's the thing:

Bush was the Commander in Chief. He didn't present their "intelligence evidence" of Iraq's WMDs to the American people because he *had* to. He tells the military what to do, they do it; the people don't get "veto rights". The only reason he presented it to the American people (I still remember watching Colin Powell show satellite photos etc.) was to shore up votes for his re-election. Which is exactly what any politician would do in that situation -- make a decision, and present that decision in the best possible light to the voters.

In other words, when Bush et al. were presenting that stuff to us, they weren't selling the actual invasion itself to us. They were selling us an image of their own legitimacy and competence. Viewed like that, of course they aren't going to inform us of those "unknown knowns"; it would shatter the image of them confidently and capably doing what they knew they had to do -- which was the actual point of it (selling that image to us, I mean).

I was sold, at the time. As were most (but not all) Americans, including many many people much older and wiser than I was (and am). I now agree that the invasion was a colossal mistake and that Bush's presidency in general was rather disastrous. BUT, that being said, I think it is problematic to hold these kinds of decisions against a president beyond a certain point.

FDR decided to drop two atom bombs on Japan rather than continuing with conventional warfare and risking many more American (and Japanese) lives with an invasion. Many people have questioned (and continue to question) that decision. But FDR was there. He was the Commander in Chief, he had some facts and plenty of unverifiable information and suggestions from his cabinet and intelligence sources of the time, and he made the decision.

I don't envy people in power who have to make weighty decisions like that based on incomplete information, only to have people question those decisions by citing information that they didn't have at the time. For the rest of their lives.

Annoying Devil in London

Envy is clearly a sin. Satan was envious of God's worship (so you say) and therefore had sin, and so could not have ever been 'perfect' or he would have been without any sin, and indeed would be completely 'sin proof' for eternity....or is your idea of 'god's perfection' the kind of perfection that's far from perfect in many ways?

And I guess you don't understand the word rhetorical...you might look it up on dictionary.com ;-)

Job 4:18-19

If God places no trust in his servants, if he charges his angels with error, How much less in them that dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, which are crushed before the moth?

Satan perfectly obeyed God until he developed a desire to have the worship that God had for himself. How that developed, I don't know, but it isn't a sin to be tempted; it's a sin to act on it, thought or deed. Jesus was tempted in every way, yet without sin.

Oh yes, I'm quite aware of the fact that women in the U.S. (and other parts of the world as well) are programmed to be submissive and polite, to a fault. Smiling and saying 'No' is still no in my book, but there are plenty of idiots out there who don't really consider it a 'No' until she's macing you in the face and screaming it at the top of her lungs, anything less than that is still a maybe to them. But that is a problem with the conditioning of men, not women.
And for everyone's sake I hope that the instances of women falsely reporting rape is as rare as you say it is, because when that happens, it hurts everybody. For the record, I had a friend a few years back who was falsely accused by a woman he slept with, it never actually went into the legal system but she accused him personally.
I've heard the story of the woman held in to dorm room as well and it is an utter atrocity. But just as false accusations are probably rare, crimes of this magnitude are probably also the exception rather than the rule. Most rapes probably happen between two people who know each other, and everything happens behind closed doors so it becomes a big game of he said/she said, I don't envy the people who have to try and get to the truth in those situations.
I guess what I am concerned about is that with the weight of all those years of ignoring legitimate rape reports we will start falling all over ourselves to convict every guy at the merest hint of an accusation. And a guy who has been falsely accused/convicted of rape is every bit as much of a victim as a woman who has been raped.

In your scenario, he has an emphatic yes, yes, yes, I want to drink tea with you, he has done his due diligence.

Until we get less crazy around sex in this Puritan country, and even after, there will be mentally disturbed people who say yes and then say no.

But here's something you probably don't know. Women are conditioned to be polite. They are conditioned to be nice. They say no while smiling, and that is a definite mixed message. As someone "joked" already on this comment stream, what about the women who say no but really mean yes?

I Could Do That | The Art Assignment

yellowc says...

I feel like a lot of you are defending points she isn't disputing?

She says, "Yes, there's plenty of art you could do" and then tries to explain why you didn't and what it means for that artist to have done it or yes, why don't you go do it, it could be fun.

She goes on to say, this type of art might not be for you and that's fine but if you're always going in with the prejudice, you'll never open yourself up to something you might actually come to enjoy. But if you just don't like it flat out, then that's that, it's ok but you don't need to belittle art other people can find meaning in. Just move along and go view some art you like?

There's a difference between dislike and just being a sour puss. You don't need to bring other people down.

I'll throw out a bit of a stretch because why not. To me it feels like people have a really hard time accepting other people's success, we're just walking masses of envy and any time some one does better than us, that's a reason to hate them.

- In Merkel's defence, she's never been elected for her track record of empathy.

- Your gulag is the envy of the "civilized" world. Out of sight, out of mind. Quite frankly, between letting people rot on godforsaken islands and marauding bands of Nazis setting their shelters on fire, I think our two nations got the entire spectrum of despicable behaviour covered.

- 14k on airfares per person, almost 5k for ground transport -- just what did they travel in? Then again, that picture looks like she's desperatly trying to fit in with the blue blooded elites.

- I don't get Abbott. Steven Harper neither, for that matter. How can a reasonable people float this kind of person to the top? There are plenty of loonies around, but always with a solid base of loonies behind them (eg Berlusconi or Cameron). But not Abbott & Harper...

Really there was no way to come out of that one looking good... although I do give her points for at least showing up and talking to the girl. Our own local version of the CDU would have locked her up in the Gulags of Nauru or Manus Island, and prevented any interviews or reporting punishable by 2 years gaol http://gu.com/p/4abgf/stw

Something else from Australian politics, the speaker of the house has come under fire for her travel expenses - http://gu.com/p/4akdp/stw - strangely not so much for the $A90,000 on a trip to Europe, but instead for the $5,000 for a helicopter trip to Geelong for a party fundraiser... go figure.

This one was just funny - our chief lizard trying to stay on message seems to have suggested that a grocery code would have prevented the Greek financial crisis - http://gu.com/p/4ae24/stw
