Study Dispels Concealed Carry Firearm Fantasies

Fletch says...

I haven't handled a pistol since 1983 in boot camp. All I need to do in Oregon to get a CCW is watch a video online, take an online test, pay to download the certificate, and take the certificate to the Sheriff's office for my permit. I wouldn't want me carrying a gun in public, but I could if I wanted to, with virtually no experience or training. Now, guns are not my thing. I don't want one. I'm relatively sane, but if I wasn't, if the world was cruel and oppressive and needed a dark knight, getting a CCW would be just as easy.

This video shows simply and clearly that things very often don't go as you plan when you find yourself in a very stressful and scary situation, and that the training required to perform spontaneously and correctly in such situations must be ongoing, something the vast, vast majority of CCW's would be unable or unwilling to do. Would they have performed better had the "drill" happened when they were told it would happen? Maybe, but that isn't how things unfold in RL now, is it? Sometimes it's an elementary school classroom full of six and seven year-olds, or with smoke bombs in a movie theater, or outside the food court at a mall, or even, like this video, in a lecture hall at a school.

So drop the paranoid, ulterior-motive bullshit. "Dubious"? You sound like a child.

Given the choice of having a gun and not having a gun, I'll take the gun. If this video with dubious intent and setups represents some kind of "typical" or average concealed carrier, then the promoters and producers of this propaganda can suck me dry and call me Dusty.

Man of Steel - Trailer 2

L0cky says...

Don't forget The Prestige!

Also, Inception was great.

I think he's done a great job with Batman; a lot better than anyone else has. It got away from him a little, but it will take a lot to better The Dark Knight in any future Batman movies.

All being said though, he could have just made The Dark Knight instead of a trilogy; but that's business.

I really liked his Insomnia remake where he had nice performances from Pacino and Williams and Memento was amazing.

Man of Steel - Trailer 2

Sagemind says...

"Healing Factor – Superman is shown to possess remarkable recuperative powers that allow him to quickly heal from wounds and makes him immune to all forms of human or Earthly diseases, illnesses, viruses and toxins."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Powers_and_abilities_of_Superman

" Healing factor: Superman could regenerate physical damage to his body at an accelerated rate. He was able to regenerate when Wonder Woman slit his throat with her tiara in Wonder Woman #219. In the series Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Superman regenerates his body after being reduced to near a skeleton by a special nuke that was designed to blot out sun light and disrupt energy. Superman's healing rate has been inconsistently portrayed, however. In the first issue of the "Superman/Batman" comic, Alfred is able to remove a Kryptonite bullet from Superman's body without fear of the wound closing (probably because the Kryptonite was affecting his ability to heal). "

I'm sorry, what were you saying?
Something about getting your facts straight?

non_sequitur_per_se said:

Superman doesn't have accelerated healing, he has invulnerability to non-magical attacks.

Lol I love how you go on this big long rant, and half the stuff you say is just rubbish. At least get your facts straight before whining.

Honest Dark Knight Rises Trailer

Yogi says...

I'll field this. Dark Knight rises came on the tails of the two best comic book movies for one of the best comic book characters ever made. Batman Begins was amazing when you compare it to Batman movies of old and then Dark Knight was probably the greatest action movie ever made, it was incredible.

The bar was raised super high, and people had a problem with the last movie. I think it honestly wasn't tight enough...Dark Knight is tight as a drum, Rises simply isn't. It meanders, it's just unbelievable at times, it doesn't handle some of it's new characters well at all. Although there's moments in that movie that are great, I feel it's second half really failed.

What I can see is there was simply too much they wanted to do...so guess what cut it into two movies. One is Dark Knight Falls and then Dark Knight Rises. I would've loved it, hell Hobbit is suddenly 3 movies so don't tell me Nolan couldn't make this stuff into two, it would've ROCKED.

!SPOILERS!

The ending wasn't handled well either but the argument to change it is weird too. Some people say Alfred should see Batman and Catwoman and just smile, and we never see them. To me if Nolan did that it would've been hacky and exactly the same as the ending to Inception.

As a whole, this trilogy is better than the original Star Wars Trilogy, based on story and characters alone. It's MUCH better you don't know anything if you disagree. Also just like Return of the Jedi is a disappointment (More Ewoks MUST DIE!) so is Rises, yet I'll still watch it.

I'm really not sure what it is about this movie that inspires such pedantic nitpickery. Any big blockbuster can be nitpicked to death if you really want to. There are just as many plot holes in The Avengers, and everyone treated that like it was the second coming of Jesus.

Two Westboro Douche Nozzles

Yogi says...

>> ^dystopianfuturetoday:

I get the impression that these true believers would love nothing better than to be killed, martyred and sent off to their father in heaven. I think the only chance you might have at discouraging them for being douchenozzles would be complete indifference. Throwing a tantrum is no fun if no one cares. >> ^Yogi:
You know, the reason these people feel that they are invincible is that no one has bothered to murder any of them yet. People say that's not the way to deal with them, but I can guarantee if they worried about their safety they wouldn't protest as much at all. The heads of that church are just barely keeping those people enthrall, if you make their adventures personally too costly, they will no longer protest and we will be free of them. Take one of these guys into an alley, and blow their brains out of the back of their head, and you will see a dramatic change in behavior.

Then lets be very kind and give them what they want. This isn't a movement with thousands of people behind them, they aren't fighting an injustice or standing for something people can get behind. They're annoying, they're just stupid and annoying and they can be shut up easily and no one will care.

Just kill them. Do what we do around the world. Kill them in a horrific way. This reminds me of the Jokers speech in the Dark Knight about everything going according to plan. If some Palestinians and Israelis get blown up or a Drone takes out a few children, it's not a problem because it's all according to plan. Let's bring that terror home.

101 Great Movie Villains

Yogi says...

Heath Ledger as Joker in The Dark Knight will always win for me.

Kevin Spacey in The Usual Suspects doesn't belong here because that ending made no sense.

Bane doesn't belong here. Yeah I said it.

Should VideoSift Allow Full-Length Movies? (User Poll by MrFisk)

gorillaman says...

Copyright is obviously juvenile, possessive nonsense and I'm all for shitting on ridiculous laws; but there's a question of tone as well as keeping advertisers and other administrative bullshit like not being harassed by the FBI to worry about.

There are other places we can go to watch full movies and tv episodes. I'm not sure adopting a Laissez-faire if-it-sifts-it's-okay approach would be a total disaster for the site, but I think the "no camcorder recordings of the dark knight, no midget bukkake, no shotgun suicides" rules do a pretty good job of defining the sort of place we want to hang out.
