The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey Trailer #1

Winstonfield_Pennypacker says...

Seems the entire hobbit company save one are for comedy relief. Hope I'm wrong. Can't remember one goofball in the book

Well - to be perfectly fair - very few of the 13 dwarves had any kind of role at all in the book. The only major exception was Thorin - who was given a very stubborn/arrogant/long-winded role integral to the end of the story.

Aside from that the dwarves only had VERY minor roles that hardly ever showed up.
Balin was sort of a friend/mentor role as he was the one who was most friendly to Bilbo. He also was sort of a 'background' teller as he was the oldest and had been around a lot. Also he was lookout. Bombur was a comic-relief useless fat load whose incompetence & weight caused problems. Fili and Kili were the 'young' dwarves but didn't do hardly anything. Dori a couple of times ended up carrying Bilbo around on his back or by his legs and whined about it. Ori, Nori, Oin, Gloin, Bifur, Bofur or Dwalin hardly did a thing at all. By and large, the entire company of dwarves were nothing but a bunch of hostages that had to be rescued. They were captured by trolls, captured by goblins, captured by wolves, captured by spiders, captured by elves, and then cringed behind rocks as Bilbo faced Smaug.

I knew this was going to have to happen though. You can't have a group of 13 dwarves on the big-screen for 2+ hours and have only two or three of them with a personality. I knew that PJ was going to give each of the dwarves a 'character' to play which would go WAY beyond what was provided in the book. So I'm not surprised by this at all. Neither should anyone else. It was inevitable that the dwarves (except Thorin) would probably end up having comic roles just so they weren't entirely without purpose. It will be odd, and seem out of step with the book but there really isn't anything else that can be done. The dwarves have to have SOMETHING to do, or they might as well just have Bilbo and Thorin haul around 12 logs.

We're ban happy on the Sift and it sucks (Blog Entry by blankfist)

bareboards2 says...

It doesn't matter what blankie thinks, dft. It only matters what dag thinks.

The line has been drawn. bobknight33 crosses it again, and he is gone.

Blankie thinks it is all so very okay, and isn't worth a ban, and all is hunky dory, right? And so he says something similar, because there is nothing wrong with what bobk said, in his opinion. What happens next? He'll get a similar warning, right @dag? And he will be banned [edit] if he does it again.

It's okay that he thinks it is fine. He can think what he likes. He just can't say it.

Blankie is like the bad guy in the new X Men movie, don't you think? He gets more power the more energy you throw in his direction.

burdturgler had every right to pull out the ban hammer. That statement is disgusting and has no place on this site, let alone this decade. Who still says shit like that? It's 2011 for Cthulhu's sake.
Also, @blankfist, do you really not see the difference between "nigger" and "cracker"? I sense you do, but if not, I'd be more than happy to elaborate. Also, trying to make this into some kind of political argument is beyond lame. Shame on you. You should know better.

Sift said this wasnt a dupe, but then it also presented no similar videos. Is everything hunky-sifty-dory right now with the sift? Also the drop down menus are acting weird for me.

"Money For Nothing" Deemed Offensive on Canadadian Radio

xxovercastxx says...

It sounds like membership in the CBSC is entirely voluntary and I can't find any benefit to being a member. The CBSC sets standards for broadcasting and members adhere to them. Or, if they don't want to, they become non-members and everything is hunky-dory. What's the issue?

Also, there's a few extra letters in "Canadadian".

<Doris Buckner: I called the Commissioner and he said he'd send his very best man.

Roger Stanford: Is that a fact.

Lt. Columbo: My wife says I'm the second-best, she claims there are eighty men tied for first.>

That's how I see it, except for the <men> part, insert Sifters please.

Thank ye, nonetheless.

David Bowie's teeth over the years: close-up dental analysis

Trancecoach says...

Looking Major Tom in the molars.

Could the artistry of David Bowie be tied somehow to the appearance of his teeth? That appears to be the subtext of the video. I find it interesting that Rolling Stone’s Alan Light feels that after Bowie cranked out not only Ziggy Stardust, but Hunky Dory, Low, Station to Station, etc., the one thing “holding him back” was a self-consciousness about his teeth. Hmm, by that logic…did cosmetic surgery beget Tin Machine?!

Blah blah Fox News

It's fine to rant about Fox News. They are slanted right. However, I don't see you being equally outraged at the fact that NBC, CBS, ABC, PBS, CNN, and just about every other so-called 'news' agency on the planet is slanted left. You can't whine about 'propoganda' from FOX and then go on to smugly pretend that everything else is just hunky-dory. The success of FOX news exists because it fills a HUGE gaping hole in the 'propoganda news' marketplace. As the only news agency that slants conservative, it appeals to a huge market. If you're a neo-lib, then you've got about 10,000 other news programs competing for your attention.

But all news is propoganda today. The neo-liberal left wing news media dominates the cycles. For people to get so excised about the existence of ONE alternative news channel that communicates the other side of the story seems to me to show a high degree of insecurity.

Blah blah propoganda on health care

So far I see no propoganda. I see a different opinion on how to solve our health care cost issues. Obama wants socialism. Other people disagree. That's 'propoganda'? Oh - I see - it's propoganda because they are 'slanting' the way they communicate? Oh... How awful. How could anyone (COUGH COUGH OBAMA) do such a horrible thing as to exaggerate the negatives of what they oppose while communicating only the positives about their own plan? What a dastardly approach! :eyeroll:

Obama's plan isn't the only solution. There are strong arguments against a socialized system. America is NOT a small European country. It is much more highly populated, much more geographically fragmented, and far more demographically complicated. What works in Po-Dunk'sVille Eurozakistan will not necessarily work here. Obama's plan should not be implemented hastily. It should be rolled out SMALL in one or two test markets. Then if it actually works (as determined by the CBO) then it can be rolled out in a large market or two to see if it works there. Then we'll learn about what does and doesn't work, and what issues to be aware of. Then (IF it works according to CBO) ONLY then should be pass a 'law' making it a national plan. There is no need to pass this massive change now now now with no testing, no plan, no discussion, no transparency, and no testing to verify its capacity for success. Executing a plan this large purely on 'theory' is a terrible idea. Slow down.
