Testing the ice

nanrod says...

When I was cub scout age in Calgary a guy from the left hand side of the normal distribution decided to test the safety of the ice on the Glenmore Resevoir by driving his VW Beetle onto it. It was safe for skating but not for cars.

Fear of heights will not deter this dad

I did exactly the same thing when I was a kid in Calgary.

My friends growing up were the type to grab onto you and scream while you're at the edge. I'm always certain it will happen again whenever I get into these situations. Probably has more to do with the time they screwed up and I went down a 100ft sand embankment.

Spoiler: I survived.

Ok Go's New Video Shot In Zero-Gravity

I saw them play this song live in Calgary. It was good. Not zero-G vomit-comit good, but still good.

I appreciate that many of their songs have a theme of trying stay positive, which has helped me work through some depression.

Winter Festival Cars Parked On Frozen Lake Fall Through

nanrod says...

Yep, I was facepalming over that line. Reminds me of when I was about 10 in Calgary we used to go ice-skating on the Glenmore Resevoir. One dude wanted to go skating with his kid but wasn't sure if the ice was safe enough so he drove his car, himself, and his kid onto the ice to test it. The good news is it was safe enough for skating.

"No I wasn't really concerned cause I seen all the people out there, I seen the cars on there, so for me it was OK, if theres multiple cars out there then I can put my car on there."

Nope, you can't transfer your stupidity onto the morons already out there dude. On the flip side this guy has jumped off a lot of cliffs in his time... all his friends did it so he can jump too.

Conan Goes to Comic-con Mad Max Style

Sagemind says...

Great feedback, Thanks

Yes, I assumed line-ups, but not to the point of killing the experience.
I go to the Con in Vancouver and in Calgary and they are pretty decent..., What We don't get are all the promotional exclusives and swag.

The floor would be my biggest expectation, but the event may be outselling it's location. More people than space. Good thoughts, I'll consider.., But still, it sounds like a party all the same..

They should change the name to Line-Con, the convention of long lines to get into huge panels that have nothing to do with comics! Seriously, if you want to get into any of those panels, you will be in line for entire days.

Graham Bell skis Sochi downhill with handheld camera

notarobot says...

Wow! I could never get down a slope like that without an ambulance or air lift. I had to look up the impressive fellow with the skills to make it down in one piece and film.

"Graham Bell and his brother Martin competed for Britain throughout the 1980s and 1990s. Graham took a Silver Medal at the World Junior Ski Championships in 1984 and represented Great Britain at five Winter Olympics in Sarajevo 1984, Calgary 1988, Albertville 1992, Lillehammer 1994 and Nagano 1998." /sauce

What to do with all that Canadian Snow...

Drachen_Jager says...

Hmm, well in Western Canada we have a different approach. In Calgary they just ignore it, and here in Vancouver we just huddle up in our warm jammies sipping cocoa until it goes away.

Sagemind said:

Nothing new, That's how we always clear our snow when there's no where left to push it aside. Standard practice in most Canadian Cities and towns.

Bald for Bieber

bareboards2 says...

From Calgary Herald:
Call it a tragic turn of events or a bald-faced lie. Rumours began circulating Thursday afternoon that Canadian pop star Justin Bieber had been diagnosed with cancer, prompting an outpouring of support from avid Beliebers – many of whom went as far as shaving their heads.

The gossip mill initially began spinning out of control thanks to a tweet from Entertainment Tonight’s official Twitter account (@ETonlineAlert) that stated:

“Pop star Justin Bieber was diagnosed with cancer earlier this morning. Bieber fans are shaving their heads to show support.”

The tweet was quickly deleted, but not before #BaldForBieber began trending.

No official comment regarding the rumours has surfaced from the 18-year-old star, however, his bodyguard Kenny Hamilton took to his Twitter account (@KennyHamilton) to deny the cancer diagnosis.
