Honest Trailers | Aladdin (2019)

lucky760 says...

Aladdin was one of my favorites in the 90s, and unlike many others, I've been perfectly content with Disney making live-action versions of all their old cartoons (just don't get me started on the atrocity that was the new Beauty and the Beast).

This movie was perfectly fine, except that Robin Williams's incredible performance was completely besmirched (as in it had poop rubbed all over it).

Aside from the great range in Williams's acting performance, his singing performance was so fun and exuberant and enthralling, as were all the songs in general.

They took those masterful Disney songs from the classic and just butchered them. I just felt disappointed at all the moments where I expected to feel an explosion of energy but instead fell flat.

I don't know who Halle Bailey is, but I'll be happy if she can sing. I get the disappointment if people feel this was supposed to be Disney's ginger princess and would be unhappy if any non-redhead was cast.

The most heartbreaking remake for me was Beauty and the Beast. I love the original and I've seen it many dozens of times in the last 20 years, and it wrecked me when I watched it full of Emma Watson's badly auto-tuned robotic singing... hurts me now even just describing it.

Jesus Banned From Church

peggedbea says...

did beauty and the beast teach them NOTHING???

anyway, i'm avoiding doing homework tonight and have been reading tons of church websites instead. what is striking me about them is that almost all of their websites seem to talk about "putting christ first in all that you do" and that is apparently (?) defined as spreading the message that jesus is our lord and savior to everyone, everywhere, ever. but those words aren't given any meaning whatsoever. nothing about good works, or kindness, or generosity, or loving your neighbor no matter how poor, or powerless, or sick, or different they may be. they seem to all only speak about punishment and evangelism. to be "like christ" is not defined as healing the sick, or feeding the hungry, or including the cast-out but as "telling everyone about salvation through christ" or some crap. and i'm kind of disappointed.

i think there's power and beauty in teaching people parables about kindness, and generosity, and unconditional love. but maybe there's too much power in teaching that kind of message. and it certainly does not fit in with the values of a capitalist nation. has capitalism coopted christianity? or has it always been this way? i seem to remember thinking being "Christ-like" meant adhering to the values jesus (not really of course) held. like it was a grand metaphor for being kind and sharing and building a sense of community around you. no matter who your neighbors were. i'm disappointed to find out it's really just an institution obsessed with punishment, getting shit, and global domination.

not that i didn't already think of course, i just didn't realize that on a smaller scale so many churches don't think good works is important enough to list in their stated mission, vision and values. like it's an after thought, instead of the actual point. "tell everyone you see that jesus is their savior or you will burn in hell you ungrateful sinful abominations, oh.. and.. yeah... something about loaves and fishes somewhere in there, maybe"

Saturday Night Live: Beauty and the Beast

that sure is a lot of makeup, costumes, and set design for a relatively short sketch... funny, but man, the effort and cost

Nah, they just used stuff from the Disney stage show. 1 day rental for 5 costumes, not all that much. The toughest part was probably putting together the walls and chandelier, which also could have come from storage somewhere.

I'm still not a big fan of sketch comedy, but this is one of the better ones I've seen lately. And I'm a huge Beauty and the Beast fan.

Boy, you're a great piece of work, kp.

I don't know why you decided so strongly I was speaking in metaphor, but I never said I was because I'm not. I said I'm simply using the term "lynch" in accordance with it's definition (punishment, usually by death, without due process of law) and not in your racially charged manner.

If you're offended by the word "lyncher" it's because you applied a racial meaning to it yourself. Like I said, when I hear and use the word lynch I think of the mob scenes in The Simpsons Movie and Beauty and the Beast, unless the context implies otherwise. Did I not also mention Habeas Corpus in the same sentence, clearly implying my use of "lynch" was for the "without due process" part of it's definition?

So I say again, take my use of the word lynch in the dictionary-definition, non-racial context in which I used it and you should cease feeling offended. I'll forgive you for calling me a fucking asshole, regardless. (It's clear you're a bit hot under the collar.)

Though I still don't know why you feel so comfortable to brush aside all the evidence I presented and demand that he's guilty enough for your sensibilities.

[edit]
>> Even the President said "Lynching is not a word to be used in jest."

Again, I stated explicitly that I was not making a joke. (Hope this doesn't rile you up even more, but I find it humorous that after what you said about Bush you're now quoting him. Teehee. You gotta admit that's funny.)
