Chimp attack 911 call: 'He's ripping her apart'

(CNN) -- A Connecticut woman pleaded for police to "please hurry" to save a friend from an attack by a pet chimpanzee, according to emotional 911 recordings released Tuesday by Stamford police.

"He's ripping her apart," Sandra Herold, 70, tells dispatchers about her pet, Travis.

With the chimp squealing in the background, Herold cries out, "He's killed my friend!"

The victim, Charla Nash, 55, remains hospitalized with life-threatening injuries after the chimp, once featured in television commercials for Coca-Cola and Old Navy, attacked her Monday afternoon, police said.

In Anchorage, I know that absolutely doesn't work. I use GOOG-411 for everything, so when I called to report that several lights were out on a major road in town with no maintenance crews around, no power outage, and no other obvious problem, I was met with at least 12 different numbers for the PD. When I went through the addresses and picked the one I thought was best, I got their fax number.

On the other hand, why in the world is this actually news? There are plenty of asshats that call 911 all the time for various stupid reasons. None of them have made the news, and very, very few of them made the "Top 10 911 calls of this year" list that various networks have. Just because the McCains share parents doesn't make this anything special.

Yeah, he was probably arrested for making a frivolous 911 call. If that was the case, they probably just stuck him in the back seat for an hour or two and let him stew in his own juices while they sat around (cops LOVE to take forever when they get called to a simple assignment) and then let him go with a warning or something.

Why is it that whenever they play a recording of a 911 call on the news or whatever, it's always like this, with the text superimposed on a background of an old reel-to-reel recorder? Has anyone used a device like this to record a 911 call more recently than, say, 20 years ago?
