After much arguing with Americans I'm now fairly convinced it's 'math' not 'maths'. A piece of me has died. -yt

"You know the rule: "i" before "e," except after "c." A rule that is immediately followed by a metric butt-ton of exceptions: "either," "neither," "weigh," "neighbor," "caffeine," "weird," "protein," "feisty," "conscience" ... and then approximately 10,000 more words. So it's less a rule than a thing that ... just happens, sometimes. Like a tornado."

I do some of these things wrong. I'm the absolute worst when it comes to grammar. Feel free to let me know when i grammar wrong I appreciate it (preferably in a private msg). *promote

I tried to promote my variation of this rule for awhile which is i before e always; haven't gotten a lot of traction, but it's sure as shit an improvement

Fantomassaid:

"i before e except after c"

I didn't think they taught this anymore, as there are too many exceptions to it.

In my american-english word list (which does have the problem that it includes names and doesn't only list word stems, so it has zanier, zanies, zaniest for instance) the counts are:

  • i before e: 4503
  • ei not following c: 794
  • c followed by ie: 181
  • ei following c: 65

At 84% vs 66% correct, your version is clearly better for this word list

Is no one else familiar with the second half of the "i before e" rule of thumb?

i before e except after c or if it sounds like an "a" as in neighbors or weigh

Still tons of exceptions with this addendum, but wondering if that second part is not as common as I thought it was.

Jinxsays...

I still spell "weird" wrong all the time because of that i before e bullshit.

Still, I'm glad English is my first language. Really I am truly sorry for anybody that has to pick it up second. Maybe it's not the worst (no/little grammatical gender!) but the hodgepodge of different spellings and pronunciations is awful.
