Fantomassays..."i before e except after c"
I didn't think they taught this anymore, as there are too many exceptions to it.
Sagemindsays..."You know the rule: "i" before "e," except after "c." A rule that is immediately followed by a metric butt-ton of exceptions: "either," "neither," "weigh," "neighbor," "caffeine," "weird," "protein," "feisty," "conscience" ... and then approximately 10,000 more words. So it's less a rule than a thing that ... just happens, sometimes. Like a tornado."
eric3579says...I do some of these things wrong. I'm the absolute worst when it comes to grammar. Feel free to let me know when i grammar wrong I appreciate it (preferably in a private msg). *promote
siftbotsays...Self promoting this video and sending it back into the queue for one more try; last queued Tuesday, October 31st, 2017 4:03pm PDT - promote requested by original submitter eric3579.
Fairbssays...I tried to promote my variation of this rule for awhile which is i before e always; haven't gotten a lot of traction, but it's sure as shit an improvement

oritteroposays...In my american-english word list (which does have the problem that it includes names and doesn't only list word stems, so it has zanier, zanies, zaniest for instance) the counts are:
At 84% vs 66% correct, your version is clearly better for this word list

TheFreaksays...Aluminium it is. I am fairly convinced.
A piece of me has died. :-p

Digitalfiendsays...I'm shocked that the video didn't mention the rampant misuse of the word 'loose' in place of 'lose'.
lucky760says...Is no one else familiar with the second half of the "i before e" rule of thumb?
Still tons of exceptions with this addendum, but wondering if that second part is not as common as I thought it was.
newtboysays...I sure learned it with the second half.
Is no one else familiar with the second half of the "i before e" rule of thumb?
Jinxsays...I still spell "weird" wrong all the time because of that i before e bullshit.
Still, I'm glad English is my first language. Really I am truly sorry for anybody that has to pick it up second. Maybe it's not the worst (no/little grammatical gender!) but the hodgepodge of different spellings and pronunciations is awful.
moonsammysays...Pretty good, but I think Al did it better.
