Despite the technical and mechanical challenges, it has always surprised me how little we've actually tried to dig into the earth. Maybe it's the potential threat of creepers, but really....

Might as well put a public outhouse on it if its not used. Should last a while. Though I don't know how safe it would be if the very bottom is like hot plastic rock... but you would have over a minute before your stuff hit the bottom, so just be quick.
