Maddox "Cool-As-Shit" 2016 E3 Wrapup

Zero Punctuation: Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning

Zero Punctuation: Top 5 of 2011

I'm a bit burned over Mindjack. In his original review he made it sound so terrible that I actually went out and bought it (I like shitty games). Not only was the game pretty innovative and not a complete pile, but he actually made several very factually incorrect statements about it entirely. I kind of started losing faith in the guy being even a sarcastic critic for humor, because he honestly, really didn't seem to play the game at all.

That was my turning point for Yatzee, but he did a couple more reviews later in the year where he made more false statements about certain games (I think Gears 3 was one of them), that just... wtf man. I get that he's negative to the point of hilarity, but when he doesn't even bother to play a game and then tells people outright to not buy it, or in some cases it sounds like he's actually lying about characteristics of a title.... Huh, I'm mad all over again just typing this up, but I had to share with someone. The guy is an irresponsible jerk.

The game is amazing. Yes it has some bugs, and some vicious exploits you can reach without even trying, and some serious balance issues but frankly it isn't even close to as buggy and glitchy and exploitable as Oblivion was upon release.

The first patch is out but that breaks as much as it fixes (typical Bethesda really). Once the mod tools hit the community would patch the game far better than Bethesda ever could. Even so, it is WELL worth that $60!

And yea from Yatzee this is glowing praise.

Zero Punctuation: Portal 2

Xaielao says...

I disagree with Yatzee for once. While it certainly couldn't live up to the original, it is still a fantastic game. The Cave Johnson stuff is fantastic, the later levels aren't very difficult but with the new mechanics they were a hell of a lot of fun and the ending was funny as hell. The comedic parts were perhaps not as witty but still I found myself having to stop for a moment so that I could try to draw breath. "The Part Where He Kills You.' had me laughing so loud I probably woke the neighbors.

Yatzee did agree that if it wasn't being compared so directly to Portal 1 he'd give be drooling over this one, but to me even in comparison I think it was an absolute blast and for those that missed the challenge, try the Co-Op, it gets quite difficult and forces you to think differently because of the multiple portals.

And I loved the new liquids, hope we see more of it in the DLC.

Zero Punctuation: Fable 3

ponceleon says...

Fable 3 was my last chance for Peter M. He fucked me with B&W, and he fucked me with the first two fables... always over-promising and under-delivering. And like an abusive relationship, I bought into the hype and let him fuck me again, but I swear this is the LAST TIME. NO MORE.

What pissed me off the most about the sudden change at the end of Fable 3 is that it was symptomatic of very bad setup and story telling. Quest after quest, I was told to do one thing, but in reality the game expected me to do something else.

The best example of this was the quest early on where the game told me that I needed to go and buy a disguise. The in game "GPS" kept leading me back to a pie making mini-game and whenever I went to the store where the disguise was, it just wasn't an option to buy... at no point in this frustrating moment did it tell me that I didn't have enough money for the disguise, or that the pie game would give me said money. Instead it just FORCED me to do the damned pie game because basically there wasn't anything else I could do.

My problem with this is that my frustration could have VERY easily been quelled by one of two things: 1. A price on the fucking disguise or 2. Just something in the quest log itself to TELL me that I didn't have the money necessary and that I needed to go off and do mini-games till I had the funds.

This was basically my experience all the way through. The game wants to fake being a sandbox when in reality it has a VERY clear path it wants you to take, sometimes absurdly so and with little logic to it.

Mind you, I was patient enough to sludge through most of the game after I caught on that I just should not expect logic or ask questions. That was until the end. Yatzee hit the nail on the head, the arbitrary nature of the way the end creeps up on you is pretty much game-breaking. The ideals situation would have been one where I was given the opportunity to KNOW that I would be required to grind out 6mil coin BEFORE the stupid 1 year timer with it's absolutely horrible good/evil choices bullshit came up.

Peter M. must be fucking Frederich Nietzsche because clearly he's gone beyond good and evil with his understanding of what those words mean. I don't think I've ever been as pissed off at a game's concept of good/evil ever.

Fuck you Molyneux. You are the M. Night Shamaylan of the gaming world. Populous was your Six Sense and you've basically shit on us ever since. I vow never to buy another one of your games. (not that he's reading this, but it just feels good to make that assertion)

Yeah, Star Wars is over. J.J. Abrams made Star Trek cool again.

Ah you must not have gotten the memo.
Abram's Star Trek was fucking terrible! The dude that played Kirk couldn't act for his life. And Spock was an emo brat.

.. and Yatzee there were a lot of great Star Wars games but because you got into gaming like 6 years ago you missed almost all of them.

I don't think anyone got that memo. But that's because I'm pretty sure that memo was only circulated at the offices of Douchebag, Douchebag and Contrarian.

I've enjoyed Rockstar / GTA games since GTA3. But to me, the "story" that takes some approximate amount of time to meander through has never been the point of the games. In fact, my biggest gripe with the GTA series has been that I usually have to force myself to suffer through the pointless drivel that is the story in order to open up the map in its entirety.

Sandbox games have never been extremely popular, which seems unfortunate to my tastes. And interestingly enough, the games that I have enjoyed the sandbox aspects of the most are often games that bridge that popularity / audience gap by including a story or other traditional gameplay elements. The GTA series has a storyline, and central plot-oriented missions. Ultima games had storylines and character-development goals. So I guess I'm happy that those are included in the games, if only because it will make them appeal to a broader audience and increase the chances of more games being released with the same design priciples; even if I tend to completely ignore those elements myself.

Anyway, it was interesting to hear Yatzee criticize the sandbox component of the game, which is exactly what would sell the game for me. Presumably he could do the opposite of what I would do with the game, and ignore the sandbox elements to play through the story... To each his own I guess.

God damn it. Why is the escapist's video streamer such a piece of crap. Every time I try and watch one of their vids either here or on their site it takes me about 5 attempts to get the stream to run. If the play ever hits the buffer it hangs. If I full screen it too soon it hangs. If the IT guys girl friend is holding out on him it hangs. Sick and tired of this shit. If it wasn't for Yatzee I would have written that amateurish site out of my life for good already. Why they can't just licence one of the halfway decent streamers from dailymotion or metacafe or any of the many tolerable video post sites around the web is beyond me. theescapist.com, suck a bag of dicks.

EDIT: Yeash, finally. LOL, powercruising

Dude, it's Tuesday and you're posting Wednesday's Yahtzee video... I'm not saying you're in league with demonic forces, here, but who knows what I might say unless you give me a piece of your kickin' time machine.

With the duration between Yatzee publishing and Zifnab posting on here getting shorter and shorter, this scenario is actually inevitable.
