Zero Punctuation: Next Gen buyers guide

@artician

One thing we're lucky for in Australia is mandatory warranty legislation can be interpreted beyond a year to reasonable expectations of lifetime for a product, so say claiming repair/replace costs after 3 years would not be unreasonable.

@Darkhand

Agreed, the obsessive level of detail on what you can and can't do really feeds into Yahtzee's whole thing about endless asterisks to playing a game.

For the first, I don't imagine it being a big factor in preventing piracy on a console and I struggle to see how forcing a connection feeds into a rationale of improving the bottom line. Surely all the multimedia features and TV integration that required internet access would be a sufficient draw to connect to the web already?

The second is pretty clear. The 30 day friend requirement is to prevent selling the game directly to a stranger thereby dis-intermediating the retailer. Limiting gifting to one and preventing you from passing a disc around is clearly to prevent a single-player game being bought by one and passed around to many. I can't imagine their loaning options when you become available being particularly generous. But it's interesting to see how MS appears to be concerned about catering to both retailers and distributors. Perhaps it gives them a rationale to charge higher licensing costs while also avoiding the direct blame for imposing limitations? Either way, pretty shameless.

Hah! I worked briefly for EA on the sequel to Need for Speed. I found out that one of the rules there is, the more money a game makes, the shorter the timetable for making the sequel. It's funny Yahtzee's picked up on that too (if you ever read this Yahtzee, yes it's very much intentional on the game-maker's part, at least with EA).

Basically, they don't care if the sequel sucks, they just want it done quickly so gamers will still have that fond glow from the previous game and plonk down their money without thinking.

Oh, and if you played NFS 2 and thought it sucked, don't blame me, I only modeled headlights and taillights and got paid a crap wage for the job.

If you thought the worst part of the game was the headlights and taillights, well then, go ahead and blame me.

I remember when Yahtzee was brand new on the interwebs and I thought he was the second coming. Since then, he's had his ups, a very long and boring down streak, and some in-betweens. He seems to have had a renaissance in quality more recently, and this review is particularly good, but it only affirms my opinion that he shouldn't be a slave to the review format. I think he'd be best employed just being free to rant about whatever gaming or game-related concerns he has from week to week, since a lot of his best ones involve him making a point about a game or the state of gaming anyway, more than they are technical reviews in any sense.

I like Yahtzee but honestly it's becoming very tiring having to accept that he's only willing to review games on his "terms".

He's made it repeatedly clear that he never plays online, not co-op and not competitive. Which means he played this game alone, which is very much a possibility but obviously not a proper way to review a game specifically designed for co-op.
He refuses to acknowledge any amount of effort put into the development of types of features he doesn't enjoy (but that a ton of other players do), and instead of at least giving credit where it's due he ignores those aspects completely.

Borderlands has always been about loot, Borderlands 2 does this EXTREMELY well but he couldn't give a rat's ass.
It's like letting someone review DOTA and hearing him complain about the lack of a proper plot and that just generally he hates RTS games (or however the hell you'd define DOTA).

There's more to reviewing games than just saying what you like and what you don't, especially when your taste is super-specific.

Finally someone states it outright, I usually think yahtzee exaggerates his criticisms for effect, but he's spot on here: Borderlands was the most boring game ever. I cant for the life of me understand why anyone would like it even a little. Bad acting, terrible "humor", and every billionth gun more boring and generic than the previous billion boring generic guns. And that's not even mentioning the horrible "collecting garbage" system to build stuff. I'd really rather take a real-life job as a garbage collector. At least then it wouldn't be virtual garbage.

For obvious reasons, I haven't picked up BL2, and don't intend to.

Yahtzee needs a new sound engineer. Or a new mic. Or something. These are getting harder and harder to understand with the booming bass clipping with every word.
Or maybe I need new speakers.

Or Yahtzee needs a new schtick.

I think the game stands the test of time. What Yahtzee says about the first half hour of the game having no action in it is bang-on. It really helps set the tone. As I recall, Half-Life was (one of?) the first games ever to really feel like the real world. It felt like you were in a real place. That's taken for granted these days, but back then, it was a marvel.

Does it bother you that a high % of sifted videos are straight from Reddit? (User Poll by rottenseed)

If I'm expected to not use sources such as reddit to find videos and rely solely on videos from youtube channels I subscribe to, then you would all be enjoying a lot of banal cat video submissions from me. Which would you prefer?

You post videos without cats (or car accidents) ???

One thing that has always been true of videosift is that posters with more "street cred" than others can get their submissions sifted more often. I've used a number of sources like recent videos on break or liveleak to snag what I think (and often is) a top 15 video to get a bit of street cred now and then. It's really amazing how consistently that works. I've posted a fair amount of obscure videos from time to time, and invariably the weird stuff gets sifted if I've recently posted something more popular or widely accepted. I don't think there's anything different from sifting from redtits than snagging the latest "New Rules" from Bill Maher, or any of the Daily Show or Colbert vids, or most recent from College Humor, or grabbing Yahtzee's latest review.

I get what you mean about aggregators, but videosift is its own community - somewhat more focused.
