Pig vs Cookie

newtboy says...

That's certainly your choice. I'll roll the dice any day if it means bacon. I respect your right to take or avoid the risks you wish until you try to remove my right to make my own choice.

It would be nice, but no, wild boar are notoriously dangerous and aggressive, and also incredibly destructive and fertile, I don't think a sterilization program would work for many reasons. What they really need is a huge, repeating, mass hunt with big prizes (to get enough people to join for a clean sweep) so they actually eradicate them. Leaving them alive in the wild, even if neutered (which I don't think could work on pigs, since one missed female can repopulate so quickly) means years of horrendous destruction of the already endangered habitats in Hawaii.
BUSTED!!! I knew it. I've wanted to ask one of you...do pigs know what to say to someone who says to them "When pigs fly"?

I'll disagree that's it's perfectly fine food. Bacon is a type 1 carcinogen. Which means there is no doubt that it causes cancer. Non processed pork, is a type 2 carcinogen, which means it causes cancer, but they need more data to confirm it.
The risks aren't quite as high as with cigarettes but it's an extra set of dice I'm not going to roll. That's information from the W.H.O.

I'm not sure if this method would work in Hawaii, but they've had a lot of success in Europe with stray animals by using a catch a release program http://carocat.eu/the-catch-neuter-and-release-approach/. It's a little slower, but not that much since cats and dogs have a pretty short life-cycle when they are stray. I think you could make a few alterations and, the invasive boars instead of running away from hunters, would begin to approach them instead, and you could register, and neuter them.

Damn you blew my cover. I'm am indeed a pig, hence my bias in this thread. Here's a picture of me and my boat driver in the bahamas http://www.tecnologia-ambiente.it/wp-content/uploads/2013/11/maiale-isola.jpeg

Actual Gun/Violent Crime Statistics - (U.S.A. vs U.K.)

peter12 says...

What I learned from this video:

1) People in Uk are more violent than in US
2) US have more metropolitan areas
3) Metropolitan Areas a dangerous
4) Media is biased

--> 1 Holly Crap, didn't know that. I'm so glad that there gun possession law are so strict, otherwise... Is it actually possible to be less violent than somebody else and still have worse homicide ratio?
Homicide Worldwide
--> 2 True
--> 3 If this is the case, what should we do to safe our children from psychopaths. Moving to small places; massacre never happened there. Maybe gun possession restrictions. Sounds nice, more wrestling less gunfights and so less lethal injuries. NO, just joking. I need my AK to kill wild boar ruining my lawn. We are fucked!

Muslim Student vs. Horowitz: Major Student FAIL

lampishthing says...

I would so watch that.

Who do you think would ally with who? I mean, you have three sides and let's assume equal numbers.

The muslims would stay the hell away from the jews. Would they try a deal with the christians? I imagine the christians would see it as beneath themselves to deal with anyone (presuming they're white americans, say). Would the jews consider reaching out to either side? It would be so interesting. I mean, no side is going to attack another without an alliance because they'd have lower numbers afterwards and would therefore be disadvantaged fighting the third group. You might even end up with an awkward peace with no fighting at all!

I can see I will be pondering this evilly for some time.>> ^dystopianfuturetoday:

Saturday morning cartoons taught you collectivism! (Politics Talk Post)

dystopianfuturetoday says...

^I support the cartoon's general conceit that little kids shouldn't fight huge multi-headed dragons by themselves. If I were that kid, and were really determined to kill that dragon by myself. I'd trap and kill a wild boar, cook it up, lace it with large amounts of poison and then deliver it to the front of the dragon's den, while the dragon sleeps. One on one combat, while idealistic, would pretty much be suicide.

Socialism: An Economic and Sociological Analysis (Science Talk Post)

imstellar28 says...

^dystopianfuturetoday,

I don't think it is probable to achieve success without defining your goals. The goal "I'd just like a decent health care system, more effective schools and better life for the everyday working stiff" is rather vague. Can you try and be more specific?

You claim that education, healthcare, and medicine are not advanceable by capitalism. Would you not agree that private medical practice has been the mainstay of our healthcare system? As far as I can tell, the vast majority of all healthcare providers are private individuals or companies interested in making money. All major medicine manufacturers are private and also interested in money. Esteemed private colleges and schools, such as Duke, Harvard, Yale; again all interested in making money. I'll give you infrastructure only because its not as clear-cut.

Do you really have a problem the quality of healthcare available in america, or do you have a problem with access for the average person? Do you really think we need more effective schools, or do you think the average person can't afford effective education? I'm not sure what comprises your idea of a better life, but how can such an ambiguous goal ever be realized?

It sounds like your problem is with access, rather than actual quality, yet I will not know for sure until you are more clear about your goals. If my assumption is true, why are you trying to overhaul the system itself, when all you really need to do is increase access? In my mind, that is like ripping out a door and installing a new one rather than making an extra key.

If you have evolved past the early 20th century capitalist/socialist tintypes, why are you trying to paint my arguments with such terms, and how can you even use such terms if you haven't read the material from which they were derived? You did the same with blankfist when calling him an anarchist. If you did it to him, how can you be so sure you aren't doing it to me?

I will admit, your disdain for history is troubling. The primary reason you aren't in a jungle hunting wild boar is because of human history, and the knowledge your ancestors have passed down. To disrespect that knowledge, and throw that out the window because you think "we know everything" in the 21st century, is I think, very dangerous in many ways.

Market Garden - Tana Ramsay's Sausage and Lentil Casserole

alien_concept says...

Ingredients

4 tbsp Olive oil
1 onion, finely chopped
2 garlic cloves, crushed
8 large garlicky Sausages
200g wild boar bacon or pancetta, diced
1/2 fennel bulb, finely chopped
1 large carrot, chopped
1 celery stick, chopped
1 tsp Thyme, chopped
1 tsp redcurrant jelly
1 tsp Balsamic vinegar
450ml chicken stock
410g tinned green lentils
1 tbsp wholegrain mustard
2 tbsp crème fraiche

Method

1. Heat 2 tablespoons of the olive oil in a saucepan and add the onions and garlic. Fry gently over a medium heat.

2. While the onions and garlic are cooking, heat the rest of the oil in a frying pan and fry the sausages for 5-10 minutes, until browned on all sides. Cut into bite-sized chunks and pile into a casserole dish. Set aside.

3. Add the pancetta, fennel, carrot, and celery into the saucepan with the onion and garlic and cook until the vegetables are tender. Stir in the thyme, then add to the casserole with the sausages.

4. Stir the redcurrant jelly and balsamic vinegar into the chicken stock and pour into the casserole with the sausages. Bring to the boil and then add the lentils. Reduce the heat and leave to simmer for 10-15 minutes until the lentils are tender.

5. Mix the crème fraîche and wholegrain mustard together in a small bowl.

6. To serve, spoon the casserole into a large serving dish and drizzle over the mustard crème fraîche.
