What do tree rings sound like when played like a record?

ChaosEngine says...

I feel like the title is kinda misleading. If you actually played trunk rings on a record you get white noise.

What's happening here is very different.

Still cool, but not the same at all.

Obviously didn't look very far, I've been very supportive of minority rights in general. I just don't think much of people shutting down debates with white noise (or the lickspittles that support them).

So don't engage then, I'm not twisting your arm. /grin

No assumption made. I looked at your past comments.

But, this comment only solidifies why there is no point in engaging with you.

Oh, you weren't talking to me? Sorry cupcake, you put it out there on the internet, and despite Sift being leftward leaning, I don't recall seeing signs that this was a safe space where only your opinion was allowed to be ventured and no one was allowed to respond.

Typical SJW. If I'm not with you, "Shut up. SHUT UP!!! KEEP YOUR HATE SPEECH OFF MAH FORUMS!!!!" /eyeroll

I would have given you a more thorough and reasoned reply, but let's face it, it wouldn't make a dent on the white noise of your position. You've made your assumptions about me clear as day and nothing I say will change that, so why bother?

In which case, all I have to say is: Have a cup of concrete and harden the fuck up princess.

I wasn't talking to you and I was offering someone who seemed genuinely interested in the other side some view of that side. I'm not interested in the vitriol from some rando on the internet who has made being "anti-sjw/anti-feminist" an identity.

Colored Noise, and How It Can Help You Focus

kir_mokum says...

this was oddly uninformative and misinformative. the names for white and pink noise are related to light but brown noise is named after robert brown.

white noise is equal power (amplitude/"volume") across frequencies (1/1), pink noise equal power per octave (1/frequency), and brown/red noise is -6dB/octave (1/frequency^2). there is also grey noise, blue noise, black noise, violet noise, and others. and no mention of the fletcher-munson curve (how sensitive our ears are across the frequency spectrum).

What If You Hear Voices In Your Head?

newtboy says...

I remember when my brother had to have a psych evaluation, he told me that one of the questions they asked was "Do you see and hear things that other people don't see and hear?"
I realized it was good I wasn't the one being evaluated, because I see and hear things other people don't see and hear all the time, whenever I'm alone for instance, and often when I'm with others if I'm looking at or listening to something no one else is. That answer wouldn't go over well, I'm fairly certain.

I often wonder if auditory hallucinations that are not verbal or in any way communicative are indicative of anything important or worrying. I often can hear phantom music or phantom unintelligibly quiet talk radio in white noise, which defeats the main purpose of the white noise (made by a loud air filter), which is to drowned out all distracting noises so I can sleep.

Clinton Uses LRAD To Hide Fundraiser Speech From Reporters

kir_mokum says...

white noise is a random signal with equal power across 20Hz-20kHz (usually). the phenomenon of
'muffling other sounds" with an added sound is called "masking" and has nothing to with white noise specifically. "At high levels, LRADs can cause disorientation, deafness, nausea, and severe discomfort." is true for any sound, not just white noise.

there is also pink noise, brown/red noise, grey noise, plus other less commonly used varieties.

Elaborate please.

Clinton Uses LRAD To Hide Fundraiser Speech From Reporters

entr0py says...

It seems that every news outlet characterizes it as white noise pumped through speakers. The whole LRAD angle apparently come from youtube, with this page being the top result for "LRAD Clinton".

Once you remove the element of it somehow being dangerous, I don't think it's any more unethical than holding a speech behind closed doors. But the use of technology does make it a bit creepy.

7 adorable ways to get baby to sleep

lucky760 says...

Ah, man, that made me tear up.

My youngest is now past that age, and I miss it even though it was such a miserable time.

Both my boys still have white noise going all night when they sleep. I worry (and feel certain) they won't be able to sleep without it for the rest of their lives because they have only ever slept with that sound.

splice-splicing human dna leads to terrible things

gwiz665 says...

It always makes me furious when people in movies act like idiots. Same thing happened in Prometheus, which had a great premise and could have been really good, but was ruined by everyone being idiots and nothing making any god damn sense.

Here's she's equating Dren with a child, notably her own child, which she could never conceive. Dren is a human/scorpion/more animals mix that have an entirely different perception of the world than she does - if she was any form of smart, she would have recognized this and not given her a freaking cat. Would you give a gorilla a cat as a pet? No you wouldn't!

The idea for this film was great and I thought it was actually quite well done. The scientists are naive and bold, but flawed people and Dren is a weird foster child to them.I thought the last part was a bit much, but it didn't entirely ruin the movie for me.

For a great example of a movie that shows great promise and really is very good, but then completely cocks up the very ending, see White Noise http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Noise_(film) or Battlestar Galactica http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battlestar_Galactica_(2004_TV_series) both of which just shit the bed with the endings.

RSA Animate: The Truth About Dishonesty

Porksandwich says...

Many authors spend years just trying to get their name out there, so for awhile...it's in their interest to have their work shared if it's not selling like hot cakes on day one.

Once they become more established and known, then the sharing will have more of an impact on their income.

Basically, starting out...without a name they are going to be lucky if people even consider reading their stuff. Lots of guys go a decade before they get to where they can make a living off their work. It's quicker now to pass your work around, but there also a lot more competition with the digital age. A fairly active self-published author whose been tracking his progression on his blog for years says that a writer's best effort for advertisement is writing more books. So that the chance of you being featured on Amazon or some other digital offering is higher, and that you have the ability to offer one of your older books for greatly reduced prices or even free to pick up new readers who may go on to buy your products. It's one of those scenarios that you're kinda damned if you do, damned if you don't on both sides of the equation. Customer can't buy every authors books nor read them all, so free might be what it takes to get your foot in the door with them. However authors can't make a living giving away all their stuff to get noticed, but they may never get enough of a notice to make a living off of their work without giving it away at some point to pick up reviews and word of mouth.

An author, their feelings on the issue is going to vary greatly depending on their success. If they've been at it for years, they might be happy to pick up the extra eye balls from someone spreading their work around. Where as someone like King probably takes a much dimmer view on it. But there's been an up swing in complaints from publishers about libraries and how much they pay for digital stuff, so all that complaining kinda becomes white noise after awhile despite how valid their complaints may be...because every industry seems to be complaining about "lost sales" with some astronomical number to attach to it.
