No, it's just a very poorly implemented idea in today's culture. Cultural appropriation is real, but it's not just a question of copying someone else's style. There's obviously a problem when, for example, enormously talented black musicians develop new music styles and cultural expressions which are dismissed and marginalized until a white person takes after their styles and makes it acceptable to like them. If white people are given all the credit for jazz or soul or rock or blues or rap, it diminishes the rightful cultural accomplishments of some amazing musical pioneers. That's cultural appropriation because the powerful are unfairly appropriating all the benefits of the less powerful, original creators. If some 15-year old white girl wants to call herself a ratched ho and wear dreads, on the other hand, that's not appropriation, it's admiration. The problem arises when well-intentioned people forget to consider the power dynamic, and instead just translate 'cultural appropriation' into a series of racially permitted dress codes. Which is what the bully in the video was doing.

This is shocking to me. I've been to the SFSU campus many, many times for work-related reasons and I even audited some classes there while attending a different school. The student population was incredibly diverse and pro-inclusive of pretty much everyone at the time. There was, in fact, a white girl with dreadlocks in one of my classes and no one batted an eyelash.

I mean, their student union is called Cesar Chavez Student Center and the main entrance to it is through Malcom X Plaza for chrissake. It's kind of unimaginable to me that something like this would take place there.

Honestly, who could have stopped it? The U.S. has a permanent seat on the U.N. Security Council meaning that the U.N. was powerless to stop them even if it had tried. Neither Russia nor China, the only two other countries in the world that might militarily give the U.S. pause, gave a strategic fuck about Saddam Hussein.

It didn't matter that there was no hard evidence. They did it because they thought they'd get away with it--and frankly I think they did get away with it. The people most responsible for the war are all free, not facing any charges, and making more money in their twilight years than the rest of us will make combined over the course of our entire lives. They take a story about one gang of Asians that raped one girl and try to use it to 'prove' Muslim rape gangs are all over Europe praying on young white girls because the Muslim culture condones it. This is the same lie used to create the KKK, in case you're ignorant of history. They claimed gangs of freed slaves were raping white women left and right, and needed some lynching. That certainly seems the goal of those producing these videos.

So, black teens are invited to a pool, and given passes allowing them to be there according to the pool rules.

White woman verbally attacks them for being there and black, then gets violent and attacks them when her racist comments are objected to.

Black kids are attacked by insane aggressive racist officer based on his mistaken assumptions, and are beaten, threatened with death, harassed, have inappropriate curses screamed in their face, and all detained over nothing. The white female instigator/aggressor is not even contacted, apparently neither is the white girl that called them to report that white adults were attacking black children, and none of the white children are even noticed by the police.

Only the "white side of town" has a public 'community pool' and only people who look right may be there without harassment, any non whites must have a 'pass' to be allowed to be there.

I think the fighting that was reported started when Grace Stone, a 14 year old white girl, and her friends objected to the racist comments one of the adult woman were making towards the kids. She said the woman became violent at that point.

Pretty much what I expected... they did a good job... there's no way I would ever notice. On the other hand, a white girl wearing some peach spandex... that will turn some heads....

I wouldn't say that, but this does happen in countries where foreigners are easy to spot. Happens to my wife in China. She's a 6' tall white girl. Her Mandarin is fantastic. If she speaks on the phone in China people can't tell she's a foreigner. When she travels on the train, people can tell what Chinese city she is from. Yet, more than once we've run into somebody who simply can't grasp that a white girl can speak Chinese. It's like they convince themselves they can't understand and so they don't. It's the weirdest thing. This video is eerily familiar.

Wow, what a sad cynic (maybe troll) you are. I think it was a pretty important news story - in a REAL sense - for the divers and their families. It is refreshing to have a survival story, or would you prefer that they all died? As for your "white girl" comment, the less said about that the better.

This is an almost perfect news story for today's media: totally unimportant in any real sense, yet spectacular and with a happy ending. The one thing it lacks is the search for a missing white girl. Maybe they can write that in somehow.
