Can't see channels (Sift Talk Post)

newtboy says...

@lucky760, please weigh in on this.

There's a problem with some posters ignoring channel descriptions (even when they're cut and pasted into the comments). This is only slightly annoying....except when it's the kids channel, which is reserved for kid friendly videos.
Some have said the channel descriptions are no longer available (I still see them on each channel's page) so the definitions are left to the poster to determine on their own. This has led to numerous quite adult posts added to the kids channel, and repeatedly reassigned to kids after sifters properly removed it.

If we aren't going to enforce channel descriptions, can we at least remove the kids channel so people stop leaving snuff and torture stories in the daycare room please? I don't even like kids, but that's abusive.

I feel we need a ruling from on high here, either channels are totally open to interpretation and we have no kid safe space (so need to remove the channel that claims to be kid friendly), or not and we need to decide how to stop abusers who intentionally ignore the descriptions to make a point.

The Duck Curve-Solar Power's Greatest Hurdle

wtfcaniuse says...

Distributed storage is potentially a better option than mass storage facilities. A combination would be ideal. Too many people are waiting for the government or industry to do something when they could be doing it themselves. Especially now that a large battery bank doesn't cost $30k and weigh two tons.

The result of our obsession with plastic

bremnet says...

Hmmm... along comes plastic. Plastic is cheap, reusable, lasts a long time, doesn't mind getting wet, weighs less compared to the variety of non-plastic things it replaced. Humans love plastic. Producers make more things out of plastic to keep the humans happy. Uh oh. Plastic winds up where it shouldn't. Humans aren't bad, plastic producers that made the plastic for the humans are bad. Humans might have wanted it before, now they don't, but it's not their fault, it's the shitty industries fault. How dare they make things that we used to want, but now we don't. Bastards. If you feel so strongly, take everything you own that has plastic in it and give it the toss. That'll show 'em. (Proper government representation?)

No obsession here, simply a result of our shitty industries and lack of proper government representation to control this crap.

Test firing a custom 4 gauge shotgun

radx says...

For people unfamiliar with "gauge": 4(12) gauge basically means that your barrel diameter is equal to the diameter of a lead ball weighing 1/4(1/12) pound.

In case of this 4 gauge shotgun, we're talking about a barrel diameter of almost 27mm.

Dear Satan

shinyblurry says...

Everyone is made in the image of God and is capable of giving and receiving love. The question isn't whether you can be good without knowing God, the question is whether it's "good" enough. There isn't a scale that weighs your good deeds and sins at the end of your life. Every sin will be accounted for and there is no forgiveness for sins apart from Christ. Our standard of good is relative while Gods standard is absolute. That is why Jesus had to come, because our good isn't good enough.

Religion isn't the basis for all "Good". Chimps don't have religion yet they show compassion, empathy and cooperation all the time. To say the Judeo-Christian God concept is the reason there is love ignores all the other religions and lost Amazonian tribes that produced "good" all on their own and actually advances the emotional background of racism.

The Truth About The Tesla Semi-Truck

TheFreak says...

So wait...he talks about how important the weight is because it determines the load that can be carried. He does the weight calculations and then immediately starts talking about the cost of the truck and never finishes his weight analysis.

According to his estimation, the weight of the unloaded truck with trailer is 7 tons. If the batteries on a 500 mile truck weigh 8 tons then the total 15 ton vehicle is lighter than the ~17 ton average for a standard semi with trailer. I'd round up for the weight of the motors and since his empty weight calculation seems a tad low. So you can assume the weights of a Tesla truck and stardard truck are at least within spitting distance of each other.

Range is less of an issue since a driver is only allowed to drive a maximum of 11 hours in a 14 hour period. So assuming they drove a solid 11 hours at 60 miles per hour (since that's what the 500 mile range is based on), the standard truck can drive 160 miles further. But if you're driving 11 hours without a break, you're an idiot. And Tesla indicates that a battery can fully charge in under 30 minutes.

Last point, he estimates the battery cost alone will be $108K and $180K but Tesla has set the expected price of the actual trucks as $150K and $180K. Considering a traditional truck runs $80K - $150K, it seems the return on investment for a Tesla truck might be shorter than a traditional truck, given the economy of electric compared fossil fuel.

Great video though. Love all the math.

Is no one else familiar with the second half of the "i before e" rule of thumb?

i before e except after c or if it sounds like an "a" as in neighbors or weigh

Still tons of exceptions with this addendum, but wondering if that second part is not as common as I thought it was.

"You know the rule: "i" before "e," except after "c." A rule that is immediately followed by a metric butt-ton of exceptions: "either," "neither," "weigh," "neighbor," "caffeine," "weird," "protein," "feisty," "conscience" ... and then approximately 10,000 more words. So it's less a rule than a thing that ... just happens, sometimes. Like a tornado."

Aikido - Hiromi Matsuoka

Fransky says...

I was the crash test dummy for a demonstration when I was at University. It was my second time at the dojo. I was told "just stand there and give me your hand" The "opponent" was 5'2" and weighed maybe 100lbs soaking wet. She had me on my ass so fast I'm still not sure what happened. Used properly, especially when your attacker is moving toward you, it is remarkably effective.

I'd like to see something like this done to a person who doesn't know Aikido.
I'm not saying it's not real or anything like that. But wondering if the guy is flying all over the place partly to make it look better because he knows "what's coming". Where as if these moves were to be performed on an untrained person would not look as spectacular.

Looks like this kind of video has replaced cat videos as the most shared and commented. I'll wait until I'm called for real jury duty instead of Internet jury duty before I weigh in.
