Dragons - Overwatch Animated Short

Assassin's Creed Trailer

Yep. So far this year, we've had Duncan Jones wasting his time with the warcraft movie and now Michael Fassbender and Marion Cottilard are wasting their time on this nonsense.

Calling it now, this will be a flashy, expensive and utterly nonsensical clusterfuck.

Considering the actual game's storyline makes so little sense, the chances of a video game movie adaptation (probably the most reliably terrible movie genre of all time) improving upon that are next to none.

He gets props for representing 75-90% of the forum posters, depending on concurrency. I know because I was a forum mod (blue poster).

Some of those peak hours/days are rough. Thankless job, really. Props to the MvPs and other helpful people, my homies. Couldn't weather the storm without the legitimately helpful people; the core of the decent portion of the community; the unentitled, do-gooders of the gaming world: the superheroes. The individual in this video, whom I respect (despite my better judgement) is the villain in this series.

The Warcraft IP is a behemoth with a thousand beating hearts incapable of true destruction. If WoW were a Magic: The Gathering card it would have "Indestructible" and "Can't be the target of spells or abilities" printed on it. Sticks and stones -- words ain't spell damage. YOU LOSE. Good day, sir.

Exactly, in the same way that Pandarans from Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne (2003) are a clone of Kung Fu Panda (2008). I don't know how Blizzard so consistently rips off the future.

Diablo (December 1996) is a clone of Baldur's Gate (December 1998)?

Maybe Diablo is a clone of DnD, but that's a stretch unless you are willing to say that every CRPG (and action RPG) is a clone of DnD...

He says (posing as a Blizzard exec) @3:44 --
"all of our franchises are based off of other people's games:
Hearthstone -> Magic the Gathering
Starcraft and Warcraft -> Warhammer
Diablo -> Baldur's Gate
Overwatch -> Team Fortress 2"

I can't comment on the first and last. Star/Warcraft being influenced by Warhammer makes sense. Diablo being influenced by Baldur's Gate... Not so much (I'd even disagree with saying Diablo as a *franchise* being influenced by BG as a *franchise*, ignoring the timing issue of original Diablo vs original BG).

I too was disappointed with Diablo not being "RPG enough" compared to, say, the Ultima series. But once I got past that, I actually had a lot of fun with it (and Diablo 2).

Did he say that? I didn't watch it. I remember myself ranting about Diablo 1 not being "enough of an RPG", and my room mate at the time had to point out it was never trying to be. I dunno.. I was a dumb young man at one point, too, but at least I knew which game came first, (though that might be the benefit of having lived through it).

Well, Jones is finally making Mute next -- the original sci-fi film he's been trying to get off the ground for like a decade -- so if nothing else, Warcraft has raised his profile and allowed him to make more films he's passionate about. So whether or not it's a waste of his talents (which remains to be seen, though this trailer is pretty meh), it'll bring us more films like Moon, so clearly it's not all bad.

ChaosEngine said:

@mentality, is it ok now if I say this looks like a waste of Duncan Jones talents, or do I actually need to sit through this second rate hobbit/games workshop ripoff?

That would've been suicide. It'd be like starting the movies for the Harry Potter series on book 4. Sure, you'd have a fanbase that knows the source material and would understand what's going on, but it would alienate everyone who hasn't read the books, and now they don't wanna go see it.

At least this way with it being (somewhat relatively close to) orcs vs humans, we establish the general base for what happens, so if it's a success they can continue down the story.

There's foreshadowing in the trailer anyway, the orc that sends the baby down the river, I'm guessing the baby is Thrall.

Which already kinda mucks up the storyline.. because that more involves parts of warcraft II.. Either way, I thought it looked pretty decent. I'm hoping a bit more work goes into making the orcs look a little more.. not CGI in a couple of those scenes, but I'll probably go see it.

This looks like shit to be honest. But, it looks like they are starting with Orcs vs. Humans, when they should have begun where we are now with Warcraft: undead, trolls, mages, warlocks, elves, lots of magic - etc etc.
