Why Do People Give God 10% And Waiters 20%

Three Police Kick, Stomp Man Lying Motionless

dirkdeagler7 says...

This is ridiculous and the cops DO need to be disciplined beyond a write up or paid time off.

That being said when they say that the cops should behave up there with the best of us, that they should be held to a higher standard etc. I agree with him. Now assuming that you believe this, it's only natural that the people who have:
- one of the most dangerous domestic jobs around
-that have large amounts of work and personal stress derived from their job
-that are constantly under criticism (sometimes founded but mostly not) by the people that they serve
- are expected to behave above and beyond normal societal standards while on duty

...should be some of the best paid, highly qualified, and highly respected people in our community. Lucky for us we treat them that way....right?

We can't expect the best of people all the while treating them worse than we treat store clerks or waitresses that bring us our lunch.

Penn Jillette's Heated Argument About Connecticut Shooting

Sagemind says...

I think this article sums up what Penn is trying to say here:

Mentally ill doesn't equal evil

"One in five Canadians will deal with some form of mental illness in any given year in Canada. And most of these periods of suffering, whether it's a bout of acute anxiety or depression or an eating disorder, goes untreated. One in five Canadians equates to roughly 400,000 Vancouverites, or almost seven million Canadians nationally.

To think of all of these people as dangerous or homeless, or to see them as incapable of employment or a relationship, is ridiculous.

These numbers tell us that the vast majority of Canadians afflicted with a mental illness are wonderful, functioning people. They are our teachers, lawyers, waitresses, bus drivers; they are us, not "them."

My concern is how we dismantle the stigma that surrounds mental illness so the Canadians who are affected can feel no shame in getting the help they may need and deserve.

I am concerned about the layperson who reads the sensationalistic headlines after incidents such as the Connecticut shooting and then thinks of mental illness as a lifelong sentence of being feared and ostracized."

16 year old athlete breaks world record

"This kid is amazing."
No, she's pouring her time down the toilet instead of contributing to humankind.
Excel at skills that are useful to global society and will increase your career outcomes and quality of life.

For a person so concerned with global society and quality of life, you seem entirely bereft of human spirit... Yes, this girl may not cure cancer, but then again neither will the waitress pouring you coffee. Everyone has to make their own way in the world and if people were a little less concerned with being judgemental and more concerned with doing things in their own life, we might just be living in a better world one day...

What is the point of the down vote system? (Blog Entry by ZappaDanMan)

enoch says...

@VoodooV
while i totally agree that one cannot discern the intent of the person who cast the downvote,i feel @shinyblurry makes a valid point concerning his own experiences.
while circumstantial,18 scrubbed videos is not a normal,nor average,number.

i think i could make a case that those scrubbed videos (due to downvotes) directly correlate to a time on the sift when many were viewing shiny's comments and posts as trollish and confrontational.
and lets be honest...sometimes they were.

but there were a few posts of shiny's that were genuinely of good quality and thought-provoking and they too..were scrubbed.i even promoted a few even though i totally disagreed with the content.

which ties in to the point in which @ZappaDanMan is trying to make.some people vote more on how they feel about the person rather than the content of the video.he also alludes to a cult of personality and its a valid observation.

so while i agree with you that we cannot discern intent and i also agree with shiny that downvotes are more an irrational, emotional response, rather than a logical and thought-out vote but at the end of the day it does not matter.
why?
because they are votes and we all tend to vote with our hearts rather than our heads.

here is a small observation i have made over the years here on the sift.
totally non-scientific.just an observation:
ever notice when somebody posts a horrid,or venomous comment?
and it will have ZERO votes.neither UP nor DOWN.
until it receives ONE downvote and then what seems like minutes the downvotes start coming.like a torrent.

the same will happen with videos.
there is a reason for that.

speaking only for myself i rarely downvote a video and choose to abstain rather than downvote but i will downvote a comment if i find it offensive or un-necessarily attacking another sifter.(which i have been guilty of from time to time).

my videos have garnered more than their fair share of downvotes.
sometimes i understood why and othertimes i did not and i have never been shy in PMing that person to inquire why they downvoted and,to those peoples credit, they always responded.
that was very gracious of them to explain the thinking behind their downvote and i always appreciated the time they took to share their reasoning with me.

so in conclusion to my point (do i even have a point?).
even when we consider that some (or many) use downvoting as a passive-aggressive way to punish those they may deem unworthy or simply because they disagree.
the downvoting system is just as vital as the up-voting because it can promote discussion and interaction and that is always a good thing.
the positives far outweigh the negatives.

@shinyblurry is a perfect example of how interactions and attitudes can change on both sides of the spectrum.

if we do not interact with those we disagree with then we will be doomed to hold pre-conceptions and presumptions as inviolate and stagnate on our own hubris.

there are so many here on the sift that have surprised and delighted me by shattering my assumptions about them.
oftentimes it was the downvoting that sparked that interaction.

i think we all felt that sting that @Boise_Lib speaks of concerning our first downvote but if we can get past that initial slap in the face we can explore a whole new range of interaction and discussion in which we all can benefit and garner a much more dynamic understanding of people whom we may disagree with.

now that this rant has come to its conclusion i shall remind my gentle and kind readers that i shall be here all week and to not forget to tip their bartenders and waitresses.

thank you wisconsin!!
and good night!

Best Bike Rental??? Didn't Really Notice the Bikes

rottenseed says...

Well there's plenty of places to go for jack-off fuel. Unless you're the type of guy in a titty bar trying to look down the cocktail waitress's blouse, if you want to handle business you go somewhere that brokers your own specific kind of wonderful smut.

It's your site, I'm just trying to help with generalizing the rules to these abstract and subjective ideas like "pornography". But where the line is hazy, I always tend to vote away from censorship >> ^dag:

That's true - and a valid point. I guess it comes down to VideoSift's raison d'etre - jack off fuel or entertaining, thought provoking videos and good conversation?
>> ^rottenseed:
@spoco2 "merit" is funny word...
@dag there is no shortage of this kind of stuff on the Internet - why does VideoSift have to be one more dump for it?
Take a look at the top 15...there's plenty of that kind of stuff on the internet...

Save yourself if you're choking and alone

dhdigital says...

i strongly recommend up voting this. When I first started bartending I had a customer choke on a philly sandwich. My response was "Are you choking?!"

He couldn't talk, but he nodded his head.

Instantly I came back with, "Are you SERIOUSLY choking NOW, HERE, in the BAR I'm WORKING at RIGHT NOW?!"

He nodded again, all I thought was "f"

The only thing that came to mind was my days as a boy scout. I did what I could and feverishly ran around the bar, performed the heimlich. He puked all over the place and I heard his lungs desperately sucking for air.

This video is so worth the up-vote. I had the cooks the and the waitresses just panicking, screaming, not helping. Please identify the problem and make the best choice available. Make good choices. I could have been wrong, but at least I tried.

Aaron's Last Wish - A $500 Tip For Pizza

Le_Lapin_Noir says...

>> ^Fade:

I think tipping is such bullshit. I don't give a fuck what you earn. if your job doesn't pay you enough that you have to effectively rely on charity then get another fucking job. Nobody tips the mcdonalds or burger king staff. They work just as hard for just as little.
Why the hell should I have to pay over the odds for what was already a grossly overpriced meal? I don't earn a huge amount myself and the cultural pressure to tip makes me bloody angry. If anything a tip should be for exceptional service. A flat rate on top just means your prices are higher. Why not raise your prices and pay your fucking staff a decent wage?

That's cute. They work nowhere near as hard as a waitress or bartender. Fairly obvious that you're a disgruntled worker at Burger King who's mad about their situation. Thank you, come again...

Waitresses never tip the kitchen.

My first job ever was as a busboy/dishwasher at a French restaurant. Waiters and waitresses all tipped the kitchen. Not a lot, but an extra ten, fifteen bucks a night was pretty awesome when I was 15.

I worked as a busboy at a casino buffet for a short time in between jobs (worst job ever btw). I guess because it was a buffet or a casino or both, but the waitresses had to pool tips and share a percentage with the other staff. Waitresses there also made minimum wage like everyone else, unlike at restaurants that pay lower wages to waitresses.

Louis CK on next iPhone

I guess my point was missed, FWIW I'm not a luddite who doesn't see any value in handheld technology. I've been through about 6 iPods now and have come to rely on them, for music and for advancing my Spanish and Portuguese through podcasts.

My problem is with the techno-dweebs I know who get excited over any technology advancement. As long as it's newer, faster, shinier, smaller, with better audio/video/storage/bandwidth, etc, than last quarter's model I'm supposed to be impressed when they wave it around and rattle off its specs. Then they use it to look up Brady Bunch trivia or some such garbage.

The smug sense of "I have more computing power in my hand than the Apollo astronauts had" yet they can't construct a fucking correct sentence on their own if their lives depended on it. But I digress. >> ^Quboid:

I wouldn't have thought there'd be so many Luddites on the sift.
@ulysses1904, yes, your non-existent example of exaggerated uselessness is indeed useless. Something useful? How about checking prices and product reviews while in the shop? I can browse my local video store and if I see an interesting movie, I pull out my phone, load the IMDB app, take a picture of the BluRay case and learn all about it.
When I was in Italy a few months ago, I had language trouble when ordering food on one occasion - I pulled out my phone, typed my order into Google Translate and handed the phone to the waitress. That day, the human race was closer to having a Babel Fish than we have been in thousands of years of human development - but hey, it's just a gizmo, right? Who cares?
In fact, come to think of it, even your example isn't useless - that birther nonsense wouldn't have lasted long if everyone with a smartphone could have done that while watching Obama's inauguration.
@CheshireSmile, if that's all you need then fine, although I'm guessing your friends have rubbish keyboards on their phones. I don't need much, but I want loads and why not? If I'm waiting for a plane or something, I like to be able to web browse, check Facebook and Twitter, play games, whatever.
My Samsung Galaxy S 2 probably would not survive falling out the window of a moving car, however this has yet to cause me any distress - just out of interest, how often does your phone fall out of a moving car?
