Aaron's Last Wish - A $500 Tip For Pizza

Auger8 says...

For someone who has worked as a waiter and a cook this is the ultimate act of kindness and they couldn't have picked a better waitress to share this with. For her to offer to give the kitchen and the rest of the staff part of it just made me smile. Good for them, good for her. And what a way to make sure you are never forgotten even by strangers.

Biker Gets Arrested for Obstructed License Plate

renatojj says...

I'm not justifying what the officer did, he's totally wrong, but I'm guessing arguing with the cop and being confrontational is why the biker got arrested and treated so poorly. Which doesn't mean cops can arrest people for being disrespectful, like I said, I'm not justifying.

- The officer gets out of the car and he's yelling, "What? What??", wtf kind of ghetto way is that of greeting a cop motherfucker? Unless he's looking for trouble though, then ok it's the right way.

- "I have not committed any crimes and you can't take my personal property", it's not up to the biker to decide whether he committed a crime and yes the cop can seize your vehicle if he arrests you, so why dare the cop to do what he knows he can do? Oh look he ended up doing what the biker said he couldn't!

- The cop asks for papers and he's like "technically, you're not allowed to ask for my papers if I haven't committed a crime", again, the biker doesn't know if he committed a crime, and yes the cop is allowed to ask for papers if you're driving a vehicle, maybe you can argue later in court?

- The cop comes back and says the 3 magic words, "You're under arrest" on some bogus charge, just accept that you're under arrest, trying to talk the cop out of it while ignoring his orders = BAD IDEA.

- He's under arrest and keeps yapping and being uncooperative, pointing out it's a bogus charge doesn't help because he's trying to shame the cop into letting him go, he's not leaving any room for the cop to save face.

I know we all want cops to be perfect angels that can take a lot of shit and abuse from people on a daily basis and not react emotionally, but guess what, they're flawed human beings like the rest of us. You wouldn't greet a waitress with "What? What??" and expect good spit-free service, would you?

Trayvon's Murderer says 'fucking coons' (2:21) in 911 call

You get it.

The only disagreement I have is that darker skinned europeans and latinos are still a rung above black people, with some white skin privilege.>> ^legacy0100:

^I think Zimmerman's identification does have some significance in this story because it can be interpreted differently in two different contexts.
1. If Zimmerman is comes from a 'white' (cultural) background, this story may be seen not only as one man's racism but also a symbol of empowered majority's oppression of the minority in US society, which is what everyone initially thought at first and the reason why the word 'white' was repeated over and over in the media.
2. If Zimmerman comes from a 'Hispanic' (cultural) background, this story is about a racist man hating on black people, but NOT as empowered majority suppressing the minority. So the story only includes a racist asshole killing an innocent black kid. Even though Hispanics are light skinned, they do not represent empowered majority in the United States. Many cleaning ladies and construction workers you see are light skinned Ecuadorians and Mexicans, and same goes for Russians and east Europeans who often work in bars, night clubs, and restaurants as waiters/waitresses.
Both contexts does not change the fact that Zimmerman is racist, that much is concrete. But it's what he represents that adds meanings to this ugly situation. Americans recognize that there is an invisible class society we have in our society, and would love to find a story that they can point to and claim it as proof. That may have been the case for Zimmerman/Martin murder case had Zimmerman been from an empowered majority group. I think the need to have evidence to prove the existence racial class society here in America is the reason why people are deliberately classifying the word 'white' in a very vague definition.
I would love to know what Zimmerman's occupation / dayjob was before the incident. This could give us an insight to whether he was being racist out of empowered majority or as just one racist a-hole.

Coffee Snobs

"You know how there are those pretentious assholes that work at high end coffee shops and they make you feel stupid if you're not as obsessed with a stupid drink as they are?"
No I don't. Are these common place in the US? Does good coffee equal pretentious arsehole selling it to you?
My local cafe when, when I was living in Melbourne, the waitresses were so friendly and oh-so lovely, and their coffee was amazing (and so was the food) with their own blends.
Don't have to be snobby or pretentious to sell good coffee, but I guess since good coffee is easy to come by in Melbourne, there's no need to feel snobby about it.

I'm sure there are a few in the larger cities, I wouldn't say common. I've been in a few hipster pretentious coffee shops, where most of the pretentiousness was coming from the people I went with. The coffee was always odd tasting, the establishment dirty, and the seating overly casual, aka big disgusting couches.

Human foolishness at its mediocre, BIG money-BIG fish

ponceleon says...

I don't know if the math is right, but some article on it was saying that it would be cut up into sushi that would go for $50 a piece. It makes me think of Genki Ya, my fav sushi place in Boston. Little hole in the wall in Brookline with no pretension and so silly Caucasian waitresses in kimonos and other nonsense I see in other sushi places that cost far more. The guys behind the sushi bar are skilled and intense. I remember watching one slowly slice a cucumber in a spiral in order to make a long millimeter thin strip which they use in an appetizer roll with smoked salmon and a spicy sauce, topped off with vinegar. The way the man slowly ran the knife along the rolling cucumber showed patience and years of practice honed to real talent.

I don't doubt that this fish will go to some amazing meals. I don't doubt that it will taste amazing. I just doubt it will take as amazing as the full meal I can get at Genki Ya for $50 (for 2 people).

FedEx Guy Going To Be Looking For A New Job

conan says...

>> ^kevingrr:

@conan
I'm no lawyer, but the camera is on his property and mostly for the security of his property. Cameras are everywhere on private property that have a view of public alleys and roadways.
There is no reasonable expectation of privacy here - the fedex guy is in public on a sidewalk. So there is no "invasion of privacy".
I am not familiar with German law at ALL, but if someone takes your photograph while you are in a public place is that a crime?
That is all secondary to the fact that his job is to safely deliver goods/packages.

Funny but 100% true: Yes, it is against German law to take a picture of a person in public space without their consent. You can however take pictures of "sceneries", i.e. without the main picture content being a single person. Say you take a picture of a roller coaster at Oktoberfest, there most probably will be several persons on that picture but that's perfectly okay. But if you take a picture of the good looking waitress you fancy, that's illegal. Yes that sounds strange and yes it is highly impractical but the law is the law.

And if you install a camera on your property to watch over your driveway it must not film the street or sidewalk. If it does (and anyone finds out) you'll be fined.

German law in this context does not focus on the surroundings (i.e. public / private) but on the privacy of persons. But anyhow: German privacy laws are extremely strict (therefore B2C telemarketing is illegal for example, i could name tons of other examples...).

I never dealt with US laws regarding privacy in detail, i only knew there nearly is no such thing as privacy outside your own home in the US. I just read up some details and the difference between these two countries is pretty stark.

The "Amazing Glass Of Water Science Stunt"

Skeeve says...

It works. I saw some people who, after particularly terrible service at a restaurant, put some change in a full cup as a tip, flipped it over with the paper on top, then set it on the table and removed the paper. To get the tip the waitress would have had to pick up the cup and spill the water.

Nasty but effective.
