The Most Popular Programming Languages - 1965/2020

Digitalfiend says...

How so? I've always found C# docs to be quite a bit better than the equivalent Sun/Oracle's Java docs. Language features like auto-property/fields, Lamda expressions, LINQ, etc have been sorely missed in Java (at least by me) until recently. Admittedly, the C# frameworks are a bit lacking compared to the Java ecosystem though. I will admit that I've had to get back into Java recently for my job and after starting to use IntelliJ, it's actually made Java mor enjoyable.

My programming started with BASIC on an IBM XT back in the 80s and various programming books, mainly just copying the programs as written then trying to modify them. This book in particular was pivotal for me as I loved the old Infocom text adventures of the time:

Write Your Own Adventure Programs For Your Microcomputer:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0Bxv0SsvibDMTYkFJbUswOHFQclE/view

(It looks like these books were released for free by Usborne: https://usborne.com/browse-books/features/computer-and-coding-books/ ... what a nostalgia trip!)

In high-school I learned C and LISP for Autocad programming. I continued to learn about C (plus a little C++) and ASM thanks to John Carmack and DOOM/Quake. Wrote my own computer games (mainly RTS as the Command and Conquer series was big back then) ... nothing great but I thought they were cool.

Dabbled in Java a bit in college but ultimately shifted to C++ and C# after getting a consultancy job and that is what I continued with until recently. Now I'm back into Java and currently trying to catch up on all the front-end Javascript libraries now as well as tinkering with Perl, GO, and Objective-C.

Is Success Luck or Hard Work? | Veritasium

luxintenebris says...

i really like this video. the last few words are mammoth...'do what you can to increase the luck of others'.*

that's a meaningful endeavor. with huge pay-offs.

doing what can be done to level the playing fields would ensure the continuation of our country, in success and strength. does us little good to do little good for those who had little good available to them.

isn't just good feelings, it's good sense.

Democrat COVID Politics

newtboy says...

More bullshit from this YouTube moron who has Trump's c*ck so deep up his ass he's drooling syphilitic discharge.

Ripping up a speech is the worst thing ever in political history? Derp.

The travel ban from China was xenophobic and racist, it only stopped Chinese from coming from China, not Americans, not people from other countries.

The quarantine rule was only for those entering from one province, and was not enforced.

Cuomo was following CDC and Whitehouse guidelines to send the elderly back to their nursing homes after being discharged from hospitals....Derp.
Trump killed 170000 Americans and counting....statistics say he's likely also disabled 500000 for life too.

NYC had the most infected enter through their ports of entry....Trump didn't shutdown travel from Italy or other European countries while they were out of control with new infections. Wonder why?

It's not difficult, this guy and those that repeat his utter bullshit are exponentially more disgusting, cynical, and dishonest than Quomo. Period.

Trump's response was to deny it's a problem for months, dumbfuck.

The field hospitals wouldn't take patients, neither would hospital ships.
Um, you fucking moron again, "elderly patients had covid but were not sick enough to be admitted" doesn't mean "they were too sick to be admitted" you fuckwit.
The CDC guidelines stated clearly they should be sent back to their nursing homes, that was Trump's plan and directive, not Quomo's.

Trump created a complete mess by infecting people in nursing homes while insisting there's no problem, the virus isn't dangerous, and sometimes the virus is a pure hoax. This led to thousands of people dying a day.
The protests didn't start a second wave, the anti mask protests and anti maskers refusing to social distance, having covid parties and gathering indoors exacerbated wave one, we haven't started a second wave yet.
So much erroneous, stupid, blatantly false, self contradictory, hyper partisan, utter bullshit. *lies is right, there wasn't anything else, but this moron has never had facts, only his own uninformed opinion.

Do You Regret All Your Lying?

newtboy says...

Nice of you to say, but Trumpublicans are immune to facts.

I've thought for years my discussions with Bobby aren't for him, they're to contradict his nonsense so other people don't get conned by liars. He's a total lost cause, proven when he said only stupid people tell the truth under oath if the truth might hurt them, defending Trump lying in his depositions. Anyone who supports perjury is lost.

Yes, sometimes kids who like fire need to be burned , badly, to gain respect for fire...I did. Sometimes even that doesn't teach them (my brother didn't stop making pipe bombs just because he almost blew himself up, for instance). The problem is, they usually burn down a house or two before getting burned enough themselves, maybe burning a few people to death for lack of a lesson. I say, if you see a kid playing with matches a second time, light their ass on fire in a dirt field, give them all the fire they'll ever want and then some. If they survive, they'll almost certainly quit lighting fires.

Bob is lighting fires at home with his other firebugs. None of them are concerned, none of them wants the fire out.

BSR said:

I've always thought if anyone could bring bob around it would be you.

Unfortunately the facts seem to have been spitballs at a battleship with him.

Your efforts have not been lost on everyone though and I applaud all the research and knowledge you've given to all in presenting the facts.

But sometimes when a child is fascinated with fire they will still play with matches no matter what anyone says. Sometimes you just need to get burned to discover the truth.

I can only assume that bob does what he does as to not be alienated from those he loves.

I know he does have some compassion in him.

Joe Biden Mental state

newtboy says...

Looked at right, life is a game.

Some people think the point is to win as much and by as big a margin as possible every time, no matter what that takes or who it hurts.
Some try to achieve this by being above average players, other people try to hide from the referee and cheat as much as possible.
Some turn in their own teammates when they cheat.
Some people just want to hog control of the ball, win or lose, others are happy to just be on the field.

I think it's about the kind of player you want to be....that's what will be remembered about you, not your hardest hits but how often you helped opponents to their feet afterwards.

Lol. I've done similar at that turn in my Civic with super wide tires, it was a go-cart, totally rode on rails, but that turn had the rear end hanging out and the front tires smoking. I also got pulled over doing 110, but on the straight right after the turn, just before the artichoke fields. The cop asked didn't I think over 80 was a bit fast, I said yes, he let me go. I was so lucky. Should have lost my car.
Then there was the Acura Legend I inherited...the Speedo topped out at 150, but the car sure didn't. I think I got it to around 175 based on rpm calculations. Ahhh, to be young and stupid again. Crashed it into a K rail at 55 mph, went airborne. Good times!

StukaFox said:

I love 84!

I had some friends into exotic cars and we'd take 84 over to the coast now and again, mostly because we had a shit-ton of money and a shit-ton of spare time to kill -- the Dot-Com fucking rocked!

There's a bend in the road just outside La Honda on the coastal side that's a 15mph hairpin with a tree at the apex. It's a lovely goddamn thing, especially when you forget it's there. So here we all come, lane-trading and exercising general assholery in cars that cost what a nice single-family home does.

Oh FUCK, the turn!!

My friend in the 911 does this beautiful trail-brake and swings through the curve. Elise follows suit, complete with smoking tires. Next up is Countach. He BARELY holds it together, but gets through without any real drama.

Now it's my turn.

Did I mention I was driving a '97 Camaro Z-28? Yeah, Camaros of that year are good at exactly one thing: driving very fast in very straight lines. Corners? Yeah, not so much. I realize I'm in trouble and I'm coming into the turn WAY too fast. I grab the shifter and get ready. My plan is that I'm going to slam it into first, let the rev limiter do its thing to save the engine, pull the e-brake and swing the tail, then punch it and swing the ass-end around and launch out of the curve with smoking Z-rated tires and all!

And HERE WE GO -- grab the shifter, yank it all the way down and...

That's when California emissions standards fucked me.

You see, when you buy a Camaro Z-28 in California, you don't actually get first gear. You get what's called a California First, which is actually SECOND gear, because if you were actually able to use FIRST gear, the goddamn car would belch enough emissions to make a farting Brontosaurus blush. And second gear ain't exactly gonna work for my little plan.

tl;dr is that I hit the no-lock brakes hard enough to get my speed down and was able to bring the ass around with the little e-brake trick. I wasn't out of the woods because I over-corrected on the way out and spun. The same God that I spite and don't believe in actually saved my ass and I didn't end up going off the road. Apparently, he loves fools and Z-28 Camaros.

I honestly had more fun in that car than the law allows: sometimes literally, like when I got clocked at 110 coming onto the straight at King City. Good times, man, good times.

The Walk.

newtboy says...

No, it's not.

Part 1: It's exactly the same gradient in both videos...probably the same exact ramp.
This is not a wheelchair ramp, which is what your ada numbers represent. If you're going to mock the video, you should at least get your ramp type right.

Part2: Where's the comparison video of Trump slowly struggling to climb this ever so steep ramp? A 3' rise in nearly 40' is not steep unless you are severely disabled. (BTW, that's about a 4.3 degree ramp, a 7.3% slope....those stripes are about 1.5' wide, and the stage floor is only two stripes up from ground level. Again, if you're going to mock the video, at least get your numbers close if not right.).

Apples to apples then, 15:20- 15:30. https://youtu.be/wY5rduEmEwk
Joe jogs, Trump barely thinks he can.

Or feel free to compare Trump's "run" at the end (the only "running" we've ever seen from him) with this then ... https://youtu.be/BY5sB7GvabY

Part3: Yes, Trump already described this event, and his description/explanation was nearly identical to yours....just like @bcglorf said. I'd say his 100% is close, Trump may have used a different arrangement of words but he said exactly the same thing.

Your implications are apparently that you think Trump is healthy, as healthy as Biden, and the media is making his poor health up. That is demonstrably false by any metric. Biden is old as fuck and my second to last choice from the Democratic field (Clinton is my last choice), but hands down Biden beats Trump in vigor, cognition, stability....just about any measure of health, mental or physical, that I've ever heard of except possibly the ability to deceive.

BTW, sarcasm could totally be interpreted from your comment. You deride the numbers given then offer your own random numbers that are exponentially farther off, and give a nonsensical excuse that this isn't a proper wheelchair ramp, how could an able bodied man possibly walk up and down it!? Many people assume nonsense like that will be taken as a joke, so refuse to use the sarcasm button.
Again, if you want to deride other people's facts, you should get yours right...it's about a 4.3 degree ramp, not 11.

harlequinn said:

It's an 11 degree ramp, not 3, which is over 2 times the gradient allowed (as per the ADA). And the ADA requires ramps of this sort to have handrails.

Where's the comparison video? I.e., Biden coming down the ramp.

Part 1: the video portrays mocking. If they're going to mock someone, they should at least get their numbers right, otherwise they're no better than Trump and his continual exaggerations (e.g. it's like them saying "and it was the least steepest ramp in the world, and I've walked all the ramps of the world, more than anyone else").

Part 2: if they're trying to be funny by comparing two things then you have to, you know, compare the two things. So where is the video of Biden coming down the ramp? I want to see Biden cartwheel down the ramp like a champ.
Part 3: "I can 100% expect Trump, if he ever sees the clip, to respond exactly as your comment did", except for the fact that Trump already described this event (walking down the ramp) in this video. So you better check your 100%

BTW, there is no dilemma - no sarcasm was implied or could be interpreted from my comment, and there is a little sarcasm check box that remained unchecked (just to be sure). On the other hand, I fully expected someone to try to diminish my comment, because facts always get in the way of a good story.

Texas Law Hawk Highlights the Notable Laws of 2019

newtboy says...

I love me some Law Hawk, but DUIs dismissed even with a guilty plea?!?
Guess I'll be staying off Texas streets....and sidewalks...front yards, indoor malls, sports fields.....well, Texas in general. That's a terrible idea imo.

I remember back in the 70's when drunk driving in Texas was barely a crime, with most just let go and the ones that couldn't even stand or speak sent home in a taxi. It wasn't good.

Um...so now in Texas anybody including violent felons can wear brass knuckles while carrying swords anywhere in public (except schools), but try to sell lemonade without a permit, "your going under the jail, son."?

Maybe 5g is making people insane....something sure is to have those kinds of laws being put on the books rather than removed.

Sen. Bernie Sanders | Real Time,Bill Maher

newtboy says...

Trump claims the first stimulus package was for up to $6 trillion, not just two....and expects two more will be needed, making the bill for his inaction near $18-19 trillion by his estimates. That means all the outrage over Sanders plans to spend trillions on healthcare and education was utter bullshit (which we knew) or that the problem was we would get something for our money. Trump's just handing it out, largely without strings attached or getting any equity or concessions for it like Obama's bailouts did. Now THAT'S some serious socialism, meaning in just over 3 years his mismanagement would have more than doubled the national debt during an economic expansion (he added >$5 trillion without the pandemic, well over $1 trillion per year deficit before the economic collapse)....Conman Don, Don the Con, that's what they call him, I'm hearing people call him that, Don the Con.

It's all but guaranteed that he's going to just grab the Covid19 funds to build his wall, which is quickly becoming the wall America paid for FOR MEXICO who handled the pandemic infinitely better with only .3% of the cases America has and is stopping Americans from going to Mexico now.
(Side note, with immigrant harvesters staying home and crops rotting in the fields, expect food prices to skyrocket while unemployment also continues to skyrocket.)
