In Saturn's Rings 8K (Narrated by LeVar Burton) 2018 Trailer

kir_mokum says...

source? i feel like there's a huge caveat to that. filming, editing, VFX, and displaying 16K is a long, long way away. 4K is already difficult and, honestly, rather pointless.

here's the short version: it's a cloth sim.

i like this guy, but he's gotten way out of his depth in his recent videos on VFX. that "major lazer" / method NY demo concept couldn't have been stolen and the work certainly was not (it can't be). the part that is the art is the simming (FX), the lighting, the rigging, the animation, the mo-cap, and the compositing. it may be conceptually simple, but you're not going to download blender and pump something like that out with a year or 2 of experience.

How David Fincher uses CGI to perfection: kaptainkristian

kir_mokum says...

i see loads of people shit on VFX and CG like it's ONLY bad (and with almost no understanding of the process). often the stuff they complain about are massively difficult shots that could never work in the real world or because it was what the client wants and/or because their reference was other VFX, not real things. there is very little actually bad VFX in properly budgeted movies insofar as artist ability and technical knowledge. this is why i think james cameron or ang lee deserve zero credit for the VFX of avatar or life of pi. all they did was secure the money to get them made and then shit all over them with bad ideas.

Do you really think people hate on cgi, just because it's cgi? I can't imagine that would ever be the case. I myself hate it when i notice it poorly done and looks like shit. Tends to take me out of the story/movie. Bad cgi like bad anything just sucks, and it's more apparent these days as it's used so much more.

While this may be true for Fincher films, it's also true for most films that are not thought of as VFX films.

It seems trendy to hate on CGI now, but most people don't understand when they are and aren't looking at it.

eric3579 said:

Other than horrible story telling there is little i hate more than overused, shit cgi. Fincher makes great films and now i have that much more respect for his work. *promote the appropriate finely tuned use of CGI to make movies the best they can be.

VFX Games - The Art of Compositing

kir_mokum says...

90% of VFX are amazing (especially considering the material given). imo the big reason stuff will look "fake" often comes down to a few different things: on set not listening to VFX sups, wanting everything to be hyper crisp and in focus (i'm looking you marvel), and using other VFX as reference instead of the real world.

Spacedog79 said:

VFX can be amazing if the proper time and effort is put in to making it. All too often they get over ambitious with what they tried to do in the time they have available and it looks obviously fake.

Avatar Style Mech

kir_mokum says...

regardless of how skeptical anyone is, you will still be fooled by excellent VFX.

Jinx said:

On balance I think I'd prefer to be fooled by really excellent CGI than to be skeptical to the point that I think anything fantastical must be fake. Truly I still can't see what people thought was unrealistic in the first video.

while it's not impossible for this to be fake, the level of time, effort, and skill to fake it is huge. the technical animation on it is ridiculous. as a VFX artist, i don't see anything off about it but i do see a ton of details that would definitely be glossed over if it were fake since they add a whole lot of work for very little pay off.

also, vitaly bulgarov posted tons of in progress pics and videos on FB. doesn't definitively prove it's not fake (since pretty much anything can be faked with enough time and money) but makes it incredibly unlikely.

Why Do Marvel's Movies Look Kind of Ugly?

Khufu says...

Nope, nothing wrong with sharing an opinion, it was his line "digital footage can look amazing but it has to be graded PROPERLY." so that means he's saying they aren't doing it 'right'. I'm saying that sometimes there are valid reasons for things that may not be apparent immediately on the one shot you're looking at... that someone made a conscious decision to grade this way for carefully considered reasons and it's not as simple as 'right' and 'wrong'.

i.e:
desaturating cg generally makes it feel a bit more photographic, so maybe Marvel thinks that it will balance all the crazy comic-book action and make things feel more real.

Also, maybe they want to mute things so that all the different films feel like they're in the same world, even if the color palettes are different.

I expressed my opinion because I've been a vfx artist for 15 years, and that was the topic of this specific youtube video! I'm not commenting on how he did with this video, but I'll do that now: "Pretty great first essay vid! look forward to seeing more!"

I actually prefer this guys grading more, and would likely do it that way if it was up to me. That's not the point. I'm countering his position.

Does that all make sense now Danny?

I don't remember him saying one was right and the other was wrong, but hey maybe i'm mistaken.

What i don't understand is why it's ok for you to express your opinion about his youtube video without becoming a respected youtube videographer yourself, but it's not ok for him to express his opinion about the colours in Marvel films without becoming a Marvel film maker.

Are people not allowed to express their opinions on things? And if that's the case, why did you express yours?

Why Do Marvel's Movies Look Kind of Ugly?

kir_mokum says...

doesn't matter what level you're at (VFX is different than DI) you're still making it look how some philistine producer wants it to look and marvel is EXTREMELY particular about everything.

Khufu said:

This opinion that color grading can be 'right' or 'wrong' is pretty ridiculous. It's just a creative decision, if you don't like it get a job in vfx and work your way up over many years until people respect your opinion enough to allow you to make the calls, then you can tell them to make everything really saturated and contrasty.

I'll hold judgement until I see the final movie itself. While I was initially disturbed they recast her race, this is far in the future and one would think races are more spread evenly, so I'll give them a pass on the "whitewash". It looks like it got the look/feel of the original anime. If this works out, hopefully Akira can be done with a proper treatment (though that one is a bit harder to realize in live action).

EDIT: Typical click bait story ending, "tell us how you feel about the whitewashing of the movie in the comments below".
