I'm an artist, primarily environments, but also UI, VFX, characters, animation, and over the last 5 years Ive been coding and developing my own work (but that just served to drain my savings, moving back to full-time studios this year so I can afford to live).

Why CG Sucks (Except It Doesn't)

kir_mokum says...

yep. you probably notice about 10% of the VFX in film and TV.

the biggest problem comes down to planning. VFX allow directors/producers to not have to plan the same way they had to with in camera effects. so much time/effort/money is wasted on fixing problems that should have been ironed out before a camera was turned on.

the fact that VFX isn't respected by the rest of the industry is a huge problem too. anything that VFX needs to do it's job well is usually the last thing considered on set (other than maybe sound).

Uwe Boll Takes His Ball and Goes Home

artician says...

I used to pray for this mans early demise, but now I kind of love him. Over the years I slowly downloaded and watched all his films. Every single one of them, with the exceptions of Rampage 1 and 2, were even worse than you could possibly imagine.
But they're still watchable, and highly entertaining if you go in expecting someones college project with a decent VFX budget.

Even if you hate Boll as most humans on this planet are justified to, check out his Rampage films. Seriously the best "rage against society" films that I've ever seen made, not cheesy, doesn't pull any punches, very unapologetic and seriously, for that genre, the best that have been made to date.

Personally I'd have liked this more if it were a supercut of films with basketballs already in them that bounced from scene-to-scene. Given the quality of it though I imagine this is someone's demo-reel for VFX, and even if I didn't enjoy it in the way I expected, I'll upvote for how well done it was.

History channel, huh? Fuck them.

This is awesome and all. Great vfx, looks interesting and might be the best composition between cg and old video that I've ever seen, but still.... Fuck the History channel.

NC: Has Computer Generated Images (CGI) Gone Too Far?

kir_mokum says...

as someone who works in the field, i 100% agree. if you're not in the industry, you'd be surprised how many shots get VFX treatment. a lot of it comes down to planning though. VFX means that less planning is required and the shots are a lot cheaper to produce. it also means that changes can be made later. it's especially bad in TV.
