18-Month-Old Healthy Giraffe Publicly Killed and Dismembered

Jinx says...

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-26118748

"Joerg Jebram, who oversees the European endangered species programme for giraffes, told the AP news agency: "Zoos could design new giraffe facilities, but many don't have that option.

"A young bull could theoretically be sent to an all-female group as stud, but experts prefer a larger, more mature male for that, and Marius didn't fit that bill.

"A final option is sending the giraffe to a zoo that doesn't participate in the EAZA-led breeding programme, but that could leave the giraffe or its offspring being sold into worse circumstances, such as those of a circus or private collection."

Copenhagen Zoo had turned down offers from at least two other zoos to take Marius and an offer from a private individual who wanted to buy the giraffe for 500,000 euros ($680,000).

Bengt Holst, Copenhagen Zoo's scientific director, said it had turned down an offer from Yorkshire Wildlife Park in the UK, which is a member of EAZA, because Marius' older brother lives there and the park's space could be better used by a "genetically more valuable giraffe"."

So yah. Who knew that the guys who made caring for animals their like, profession and stuff might actually have some like, reasons. and stuff. I know, I know, it doesn't make as great a headline as "Zoo murders and mutilates innocent giraffe in front of children. also aidsrape."

Yogi said:

I still don't understand why if they were getting offers why were they soo intent on killing it? The only possible theory I can come up with is that one of the zookeepers raped the giraffe and gave it aids. So he wanted him killed and disposed of so he wouldn't go somewhere else and have the aids traced back to him. It's just a theory, but so far it's aidstight. Oops Airtight.

Doug Stanhope ~ NSA Suicide Rate

MilkmanDan says...

This is why I think we should adopt various extremist phrases to be used as colloquial slang for generic situations.

"Sit on the John" came out of dislike for an English king and no longer really applies; I think we should start referring to defecation as "bombing the White House".

Instead of "taking a raincheck" when turning down something, pull a reverse-Giuliani and say that you're going to have to "9/11" that plan.

Refer to everyday activities with vaguely sinister operational titles. Any use of a broom can be "operation cleansweep". Taking your kids to school could be "delivering the package" in "operation mindblow".

I'm sure we can come up with plenty of creative ways to trigger the keyword filters and force the NSA drones to actually visually parse some of the terabytes of random crap that they are collecting.

Well, according to prism . . . they only search for keywords.

Sarzys review of "The Stanley Parable"

Sarzy says...

Not including the time spent playing the game, it took me maybe like two or three hours to write/record the voice-over and edit it all together. I used a crappy headset to record the audio (I think I might invest in a slightly better quality mic), a program called Open Broadcaster Software to record the gameplay, and I edited it with Adobe Premiere.

The funny thing is that I actually had to re-record myself playing through a portion of the game with the mouse sensitivity turned down; I typically play FPSes with the sensitivity way up, but it turns out that me swinging the camera around like a crack addict on speed doesn't make for the most watchable video ever.

Hey @Sarzy just curious. How long does it take to make a video like this and any interesting details of how you go about it.

Amy hears sound for the first time @ 26 years old.

I do this often. I am not fully deaf, but at least I can turn down the audio volume like in loud parties, concerts, movie theaters, alarms, etc.

I envy people that have a switch that can turn off all noise in the world entirely.

I do not envy them for sign language, or speaking disabilities, but turning off all sound when you want silence, would be pretty cool.

George Galloway Storms Out Of Debate With Israeli Student

Jinx says...

Israel exists. How does not recognising them or refusing to debate their citizens do anything to change the fact that Israel and the problems it creates will still exist. Isn't this exactly the issue - two sides completely unwilling to communicate or compromise on anything?

And isn't debating more than just trying to convince your opponent? There is an audience present, and I dare say most of them aren't Israeli of military age. Further more, how many times have you known anybody to make a u-turn instantly on anything even when presented with overwhelming evidence to the contary of their beliefs. More often you are sowing the seeds that will eventually grow to undermine their convictions. I can't remember a time when Hitchens walked out on a debate because he felt his opponent was too firmly rooted to be swayed, or that they happened to be born in a specific country.

Was he misled by event organisers? Possibly, but its his word vs theirs so we'll never know. It certainly wouldn't have been news if he'd simply turned down the debate. Still, I think its juvenile to refuse to debate Israelis. He alienates those worth debating against and leaves him preaching only to his own choir, achieving absolutely zip. Way to go Galloway, even the moderates think you're a clown.

edit - I should mention I don't think there is anything wrong with turning down a debate against somebody. I think its something different to simply blacklist all Israelis, effectively deciding that they are all deaf to your opinions or that none exist that could offer new points.

almost wish they didn't hang up on him, typically when someone calls a show, you're supposed to turn down the show so you don't get feedback, so there is a good chance that because he hung up on him, he didn't get to hear Matt calling him a piece of shit

Joe Scarborough finally gets it -- Sandy Hook brings it home

bobknight33 says...

The perpetrator of this crime stole his weapons from his mother’s house after murdering her. He tried to buy a rifle days before, but was turned down.

No law could have stopped that short of disarming all law-abiding Americans. And that would just mean more death and carnage – and the end of liberty for all.

The massacre at Sandy Hook could have been minimized, if not averted completely, if just one teacher or administrator at the school was armed.

What should the default color scheme of VideoSift be? (User Poll by dag)

probie says...

Black is my favorite colour so I like the new dark background.

But with that said, the default should be the lighter theme. If your goal is to invite passers-by in for a cup o' joe with the hopes that they'll stick around, your website should be warm and inviting, not dark. And anyone who sticks around will always have the option of turning down the lights.

And yes, something has to be done about the contrast. Blue text on a grey background is the first thing they teach you *not* to do in HTML class. I feel like I'm looking at one of those Magic Eye posters, trying to find the focal point when I look at blue text on a grey background

Full Mitt Romney Fundraiser Video Part 1

L0cky says...

It's so easy for people who have received endless opportunity after opportunity to confuse the difference between somebody who turns down all of their opportunities in return for a cheap handout; and somebody who lacks opportunities.

To some people - ignorant and stupid people - the entire concept that opportunity may be a hard thing to come by, is not even considered.

They may even be ignorant enough to ask "I took my opportunities; why can't they?". And even in asking the question; when the answer is obvious, they are too stupid to recognise it.

A requirement of being a good leader of a country is to invest, above all else, in creating opportunity for its people. A person who does not even recognise this as a goal, and does not even recognise a lack of opportunity as a problem, does not qualify to be a president.

The Invisible Bicycle Helmet (Some thought it can't be done)

bovan says...

I always use my bicycle on the sidewalk or separate bicycle roads, my average speed is 16 km/h (10 mph), I always look for immediate and potential dangers and slow down near kids and animals as well as turn down the volume on my music when I need to dedicate more attention, I never cross a road unless I have eye contact with the approaching driver, and I have never in my 30+ year life been close to landing with any parts of my body above my knee (since all the crashes I have ever had have been low-speed while trying to break on gravel). (Also my mileage on bicycle since April when the snow disappeared is ~900km.)

Maybe this will come back to haunt me one day, but I'm so surprised that people need bicycle helmets for most of the slow speed bycycling they do when what they need is actually a brain, since everyone I know that has been involved in serious bicycle crashes have been stupid, reckless or just crazy.
Of course if you have to use the roads and live in France, then please do wear one..

Pay attention to the car thats coming instead of cutting. Tap the break a bit instead of going full speed down a hill. Slow down (and show some respect) for your fellow humans and animals.
Avoiding an accident alltogether is always better than being in one with a crappy helmet.

I use a helmet when I go snowboarding and mountain biking though, but it's not a bicycle helmet.
