Why This British Crossroads Is So Dangerous

cloudballoon says...

Well, the video already mentioned the cost of getting traffic lights as well as laying down miles (or Kilometres) of electric cables, so this is a rural area (otherwise a city/town would've certainly found the money to do it)... installing traffic cams will need to lay those same cables.

They could do a roundabout maybe? UK & EU are fond of those...

In general I'm opposed to using traffic cams to ticket people who don't stop at lights or intersections, but I think I'd allow it in this instance.

How Mumbai Police Stop Drivers Honking at Red Lights

mxxcon says...

Ya...I don't see this effort being too successful because they will eventually just start ignoring traffic lights https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pLUm3Q-7iZA

but holy crap do indians love to honk..

This is a great idea... but how about results?

Did people eventually stop honking???

Such a disappointing end to the video!

I was on the edge of my seat... and they LEFT me there. Boo!

The Future of Airliners? - Aurora D8

transmorpher says...

I'm predicting that once self-driving cars are mainstream in the next 20 years the airlines will be in a lot of trouble. With a majority of self driving cars on the road, I think the safety numbers will shift to cars being the safer form of travel, and likely very few traffic jams. We may not even need traffic lights eventually as traffic learns to flow smoothly.

How not to be Angry all the Time

bamdrew says...

Patience and restraint are a product of appropriate expectations.

Expectations should be a product of experience, but often are guided to be overly optimistic by our betting nature.

'I should have left earlier but if I make every traffic light I'll be fine... aaaahhh why are these traffic lights all making me late!'

Tesla Model S driver sleeping at the wheel on Autopilot

RedSky says...

Woah, woah, you're way overstating it. The tech is nowhere near ready for full hands-off driving in non-ideal driving scenarios. For basic navigation Google relies on maps and GPS, but the crux of autonomous navigation is machine learning algorithms. Through many hours of data logged driving, the algorithm will associate more and more accurately certain sensor inputs to certain hazards via equation selection and coefficients. The assumption is that at some point the algorithm would be able to accurately and reliably identify and react to pedestrians, pot holes, construction areas, temporary traffic lights police stops among an almost endless litany of possible hazards.

They're nowhere near there though and there's simply no guarantee that it will ever be sufficiently reliable to be truly hands-off. As mentioned, the algorithm is just an equation with certain coefficients. Our brains don't work that way when we drive. An algorithm may never have the necessary complexity or flexibility to capture the possibility of novel and unexpected events in all driving scenarios. The numbers Google quotes on reliability from its test driving are on well mapped, simple to navigate roads like highways with few of these types of challenges but real life is not like that. In practice, the algorithm may be safer than humans for something like 99% of scenarios (which I agree could in itself make driving safer) but those exceptional 1% of scenarios that our brains are uniquely able to process will still require us to be ready to take over.

As for Tesla, all it has is basically auto-cruise, auto-steer and lane changing on request. The first two is just the car keeping in lane based on lane marker input from sensors, and slowing down & speeding up based on the car follow length you give it. The most advanced part of it is the changing lanes if you indicate it to, which will effectively avoid other cars and merge. It doesn't navigate, it's basically just for highways, and even on those it won't make your exit for you (and apparently will sometimes dive into exits you didn't want based on lane marker confusion from what I've read). So basically this is either staged or this guy is an idiot.

Idiot Drives Civic Into River, Rescued By Reporter

poolcleaner says...

Some people are so shocked to be woken up from their happy pappy slumber land where they never need to swim, they just need to pay their bills, follow traffic lights and signs, and everyone will do their job for them. After all, this man paid his taxes and this should have been taken care of by government, right? Ahhhh hahahahahahahaha

Tailgater vs Brake Checker

SDGundamX says...

As has been said, both are douches (and depending on the state, both were guilty of driving infractions). Very real chance that by brake-checking, the tailgater is going to swerve into someone else (like the guy coming up from the on ramp). Even if that didn't happen, (s)he almost flew into oncoming traffic after losing control, which again would have caused damage to other cars and possible injury to innocent bystanders.

And even if the tailgater hadn't have lost control, the situation is escalated and you're looking at a possible road rage incident with the tailgater retaliating--which actually happened to me when I purposely drove slower (no brake-checking) while being tailgated. Guy jumped out of his car at the next traffic light and tried to get me out of mine to start a fight. I drove off when the light turned green and he actually chased me down, passed me, then skidded sideways and blocked the whole road with his car, again jumping out and wanting to fight. I backed up, turned around, and drove straight to the nearest police station (which was thankfully just a half-mile away)--he didn't follow me into the lot and just kept driving.

Now, if that guy had had a gun, I would almost certainly be dead. The smugness that comes from "teaching someone a lesson" is not worth the potential injury you may cause yourself or others when 2-ton vehicles travelling at high speeds are involved. As has been said, the proper response in these situations is to safely get out of the way and possibly call the police if the driving seems erratic enough to warrant it.

How to Conduct Traffic Like A Boss

Claimed Police Brutality - What is your take?

charliem says...

He said she ran a red light....she clearly did not do that.
She was coming to a rolling stop whilst it was still red, and didn't even enter the intersection until AFTER the traffic light had changed to green.

The entire premise for pulling the car over is bogus.

Would Headlights Work at Light Speed?

dannym3141 says...

That's pretty much my favourite physics fact right there. From the point of view of a photon, travel is instantaneous. From the sun, from the next nearest star, from the big bang... It seemed to the photon that it was emitted and absorbed instantaneously.

We also had a brilliant bunch of lectures by Don Kurtz who told us about a book called Mr Tompkins in wonderland, in which the narrative was written by a guy who was a bicyclist in a world where the speed of light, c = 10 metres per second or so. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mr_Tompkins

We then did a bunch of questions about what that man experienced, what colour traffic lights were, what length his bike and roads were, and what time it said on the clock tower. Just great, that's what makes me want to lecture one day.
