well fuck me running.sift search bar is starting to really piss me off.
my clip is far better quality and the length adds the context.
tom cruise can be quite menacing and this scene reflects that.though he will never beat walken in the menace dept.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: The Lottery

speechless says...

More from "MDB Communications" (the ad firm behind the D.C. Lottery commercials):

They won an "Addy" award for this btw. For whatever that's worth.

I gave this sift 2 votes up (in my mind) but also one vote down because it threw Tom Cruise under the bus for no reason. Joel Goodsen, Maverick, Ethan Hunt, Jerry Maguire, Les Grossman and Lestat de Lioncourt has nothing to do with this.

Denzel is... THE EQUALIZER

Sarzy says...

Well, sure, he doesn't have a ton of range, but he's a movie star. He doesn't need to have range, nor do we particularly require it of him. Pretty much every movie star in the history of cinema plays some variation on themselves in every role -- people like George Clooney, Will Smith, or Tom Cruise (or going further back, Cary Grant, Clark Gable, or John Wayne) rarely mix it up too much, because they are movie stars and their established persona is part of what makes them so bankable. That doesn't make them bad actors, it just makes them a specific type of actor.

He's got some charisma, but he's not a good actor. Lawyer Denzel, Angry Cop Denzel, Pilot Denzel, Blind Post-Apocalyptic Bible-Carrying Denzel, they're all the same mannerisms and emotions.

Batman Recut as a Comedy

MichaelL says...

Agree. This was pretty good... I like the 'main character running down a street/alley/airport concourse' scene to convey desperation/confusion/redemption which is a cliche of every Tom Cruise movie and every rom-com ever...

This feels more like an quirky independent coming-of-age cut instead of a comedy.

The Eleventh Doctor Regenerates...The Twelfth Doctor Appears

Payback says...

I kinda hope this turns into a meme. Matt Smith regenerates into... TOM BAKER.
or TOM CRUISE, or EPIC BEARD GUY
etc. etc.

Dara Ó Briain did a bit in which he argued that Tom Cruise is the greatest actor that has ever lived - because he's made numerous highly watchable movies despite being so incredibly annoying.

I'll echo that I really like Tom Cruise in this movie. I thought he played the part well. The lawyer chick was totally annoying though--not the actress's fault, the lines/personality they gave her in the script just made her seem too dumb/naive to be believable.

Sniper007 says...

It's a scene out of context. Turns out the girl and all the 'brothers' were hired to beat him up and/or get him arrested - hence the instant arrival of the cops. Jack (Tom Cruise) knew something was very suspicious from the start.

I haven't read the books or seen the movie, so I'm kinda confused. Is Tom Cruises character *supposed* to be a misogynistic asshole or is it just bad writing?

Nice of the others to follow the "form an orderly queue and attack one at a time" trope.
