Interesting. I don't have cable/satellite so I wouldn't know. In fact, I don't think I ever watched TBS shows before.

In reply to this comment by MikesHL13:
Yes, unless it airs more than once. I rarely watch TV, but I've caught segments a little after 8. Doesn't surprise me though; I think the TBS programming works like that in general (based on EST). What the east coast watches at 11, we watch at 8.

In reply to this comment by ant:
Really? I thought TBS airs it at 11:00 PM on pacific time zone.

In reply to this comment by MikesHL13:
Funny. I had debated the "latenight", but here on Pacific Coast (PT) Conan is on about 8pm, so I wasn't sure if that qualified.

In reply to this comment by ant:
*latenight

NBC wouldn't show this.

MachineGunrock update please (Sift Talk Post)

So, this was written six hours ago, and being that RS is in the same time zone as me, that would mean he wrote it at 3:30am. And, we just had a daylight savings fall back happen, so technically it was really like 4:30am. Last night was Halloween: a party night.

Obviously RS was drunk and feeling all 'tear in my beer' for MGR. Awwwww. What a sweet princess. Later he'll wake up and check through his recent comments in a panic wondering what he posted while 'drunk surfing' the Sift.

The Great VS Sifting Challenge (Sift Talk Post)

EDD says...

>> ^dotdude:
We need a time and time zone for the deadline.

To be honest, I'm not going to follow it to the minute myself, but this is done. Monday, 10.00 GMT.

>> ^blankfist:

Yeah, I'm sorry, buddy, I did think of this one (since you sifted it some time ago), but like burdy said, it goes into *dark for sure, and it might even be appropriate to assign *art to it as well, as campiondelmondo and schmawy did to your post. And as if that wasn't enough...

So the race is still on. By the way, I will also be participating (that doesn't mean somebody else can't claim the prize if they find a proper video, though).

Siftquisition of feature Siftquisition (User Poll by Ornthoron)

I think mauz15's moderator idea might work. Let the community vote for its "judges," and give them a term of 3 or 6 months, at which time they can be re-elected or thrown out in favor of someone new. We'd probably need at least 3 or 4 though, not just to cover all time zones but also to pick up the slack if other moderators are unavailable. In fact I'd like to nominate one person right now - Krupo. He seems very level-headed, and he's well-respected by the community. I don't want the job, mainly because I'm not here often enough these days to be able to do the job. And I'd be a hanging judge. I like to watch 'em swing.

What do admins that don't want to deal with these type of problems generally do? they assign, or let a community choose moderators. With a community as small as this one, 2 generally knowledgeable, socially involved, flexible (emphasis on flexible, no power freaks or every-rule-is- prefect-in-all-cases kind of person) and respected members of the sift can deal with altercations and keep things in check. Ideally, each of them with a time zone different enough so that there is at least one of them available at any time of the day.

Let their moderator actions be publicly available (sort of like this format http://www.videosift.com/awards ) so that they cannot get away with power abuse that easily. It's not like this community is large enough so that we would have to get dozens of mods, or that the person in charge of moderating would have no time to enjoy the site while doing their job. They would only deal with ambiguous cases, or problems where user input from each side is needed to determine a decision. In clear cut cases like self links, etc, the current system works fine.

This gets rid of all the public soap operas, and also has the community with some degree of responsibility and input since they will pick the mod(s), and call their actions into question if needed.

Just a thought based on previous experience. It seems like the community does not consider the system of the siftquisitions as good, and the admins do not want to deal with these incidents, so I thought you might want to consider this alternative.

Radical Proposal for the Queue, PQueues, and Beggar's Canyon (Sift Talk Post)

MINK says...

i just had a vid die in the queue, it's not total shit, and there's probably 10 people on here who would appreciate it. The only thing i can think of to fix that problem is to remove time zone bias and allow us to filter by "favourite users" so we don't miss the obscure stuff from our sift buddies.

people get obsessed with "what sifts" but i care more about "what i watch" and of course "how can i get to my kind of stuff quicker?". If i had a stream with all my favourite sifters vids in it then i wouldn't care if they sift or not because i could see them easily anyway.

anyway, i like jonny's radical proposalism.

Radical Proposal for the Queue, PQueues, and Beggar's Canyon (Sift Talk Post)

MINK says...

all this is crap. Edeot you say this is complicated then you write 4 tweaks. sagemind it doesn't matter how wonderful your tweaks might be, the whole thing is too complicated. None of the features we have added here have really improved the situation. Comment voting didn't improve the comments here, for example.

jonny on the other hand proposed sweeping away some of the crap here, not tweaking the crap. we can all sit here and debate various tweaks forever, and it will be useless. What we need is to simplify. an automatic system that gives all videos an "airing" of equal exposure, regardless of timezones, and which does away with all these queues, publish dates, republish dates and invocations is a GOOD idea. Simplicity is beauty and efficiency.

to get rid of some of these clunky features and replace them with a simpler system is a good idea. to "improve" the clunky features is impossible. it was a mistake to build them in the first place. i mean, i don't even KNOW all the rules and invocations in this place any more, i got bored trying to keep track of it.

And time zone bias really really sucks.

Don't Take Downvotes Personally (Sift Talk Post)

rottenseed says...

Well joedirt, I think that should remain on the discretion on the of the member. Sometimes there may be gems waiting in those pqueues and due to certain reasons (time posted, time zone, etc.) they might be overlooked. While I do agree that "upvote everything in pqueue" can be damaging to the quality control of this site though.

Should the queue escape limit be raised? *Please read before voting (User Poll by EDD)

gwiz665 says...

I don't think that raising the escape threshold is a good enough solution.

While there are many, many videos between 10-12 (http://www.videosift.com/search?q=&t=v&u=&s[]=s&o=hivotes&vmin=10&vmax=12&sh=&l=&n=&b=&submit=Search) it would still not touch the underlying problem, which is that quality is overlooked and quick-fixes are rewarded.

I think we need to devise a different way to measure quality that includes other parameters (although, it's a shame that we'd have to sacrifice transparency).

For instance, number of unique views could be a factor, number of promotes, number of begs, number of comments and so on. There is also a grave issue with time zone preference, which is a shame. What we could do, is to make videos only submittable in peak hours, so that a queue outside the queue was created and in peak hours the video was thrown on to the queue, or something like that, I'm just brainstorming (or brain-whisking in my case).

Should the queue escape limit be raised? *Please read before voting (User Poll by EDD)

MINK says...

the current system sifts out the bottom 50% of internet videos really well (shitty technical quality, totally boring, youtube flotsam, snuff, these things die in the queue)

The other 50% is just kinda thrown up in the air to see who salutes.

The number of videos on here has increased dramatically, and the popular stuff has been subsidised even more, creating a feedback loop that hides the more obscure stuff that less people like (but they like it A LOT). Videosift is set up as a popularity contest so the "bias" here is "towards popular". That's what you get when you try to be egalitarian, you suppress the obscure.

The top 15 is indeed useful but skewed towards "things that a lot of different people agree is upvotey". This predictably leads to a lot of comedy, cats and CCTV. It's useful as a "Channel One" for the internet, but you don't always want to watch channel one.

Also: titles, tags and categories are screwed so you can't rely on search.

Anyway in answer to the poll, i don't think 10 or 12 would make any difference. The site is set up so that "most things sift" and unfortunately that means that "gems are missed". But the vote threshold is not the thing to fuck with, unless you are going to index it to the number of voting members, and i think if you did that we would have to increase it to 30.

The only change I would find useful in the queue would be some kind of algorithm that removes the time zone bias.

The underlying problem is that people sift stuff for popularity, rather than from their love of sharing video. The incentive system here is not conducive to "good" sifting. We've all posted crap we wouldn't normally post but we know it's going to get upvotes, and we've all suppressed good stuff that isn't worth sifting because it's so obscure, or been disheartened when something super interesting is buried under a pile of lolcats. Do people really love lolcats this much? or is it partly because we made a biased reward scheme specifically for short videos that make you smile?
