Ex Machina Trailer
SciFi RomComs seem to be all the rage these days (though this seems more thriller than com). Maybe we need a new abbrev. RomFi? SciRom? At any rate it seems to have an interesting premise.
Funny Cat Hop
I think that was the Thriller dance.
WTF Happened to Movie Posters?
Exactly. It's why trailers nowadays reveal just about everything. It's why we're not getting off superhero movies anytime soon.
The movie industry in the last 10 years has seen a bifurcation into either cheap indie flicks or super expensive international blockbusters with the middle largely disappearing. Since major studios are increasingly relying on fewer and more expensive super blockbusters, any semblance of risk taking has gone out the window.
It's all remakes, adaptations, re-remakes. The plots are made as basic as possible with no particularly cultural inclination lest foreign cultures are confused. Movie posters are no different. If teal and orange signifies action thriller and fosters a positive association with previous flicks then like hell they're going to change it.
I don't think it has much to do with money, the studios could certainly afford to make great art for each of their movies. It comes down to what sells, cryptic artwork doesn't really tell you what's in a movie. You need to think of a poster as a 3 second commercial for your movie.
Michael Hastings: Police and Fire TOLD not to comment
Car accidents? Come on, drone strikes are totally legal, who does that 70's conspiracy thriller crap anymore?
Michael Hastings: Police and Fire TOLD not to comment
I read somewhere that he sent an email to his coworkers the night before he died explaining that he believed himself to be under surveillance, that they should seek legal council if approached by any suits and that he'd be going off the grid for a bit chasing a big story. And then he dies at 4am in the morning in a crash nobody is saying anything about. it certainly reads like a scene from a hollywood thriller and I'm sure thats the narrative the news media would love to repeat.
It wouldn't at all surprise me if he was being watched given his history and all this NSA business. Maybe as little as a year ago I would have scoffed at the idea of him being killed...now I'm not so sure. I'd normally say the simplest explanation was probably the right one, but given the details of the crash that have been made public I've no idea what that might be. So no speculation from me, apart from to say that I think something stinks here.
Oh, and I'd love to know what that story he was working on was.
Europa Report TRAILER (2013)
Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)
I suppose I'm also basing it on the extra info provided in this review http://io9.com/europa-report-at-last-a-space-thriller-worth-taking-s-493192948
I agree. I thought this was looking great and then they went underwater and.... gee I wonder how this will turn out? Oh look, exactly what I expected.
Now, maybe we're wrong. Maybe this is some epic misdirection and it'll turn out really interesting, but I'm not hopeful.
and @dag, why do you say it "focuses more on the science than the special effects"? I can't say I saw a lot of science there.
Bitcoin Explained
If paranoia thriller movies have taught us anything, they're probably decrypting some top secret government codes.
Also, are all these complex calculations actually calculating something useful (besides "finding" bitcoins?) It would be cool if they used it for protein folding or something.
Numberphile demonstrates the Curta "pocket" calculator
Beautiful. I have to remember it for if I ever write that steampunk math thriller....

The Prometheus Science Training School
Ok, I'm late to the party but I finally saw it last night and by christ it was awful, for all of the above reasons and more.
And @Unsung_Hero, I'm quite happy to enjoy a mindless space terror/action flick, but prometheus isn't even that. It kinda tries to be, but doesn't really know whether it wants to be high concept or thriller or both and fails at all of them.
What really annoys me is that there's some potentially awesome sci fi out there (Altered Carbon is still in development hell) and somehow someone lets Damon "Lost, but in space" Lindelof write this crap.

You have been awarded 1 Power Point for fixing the embed code for Dead Pool video One "Thriller" of a train ride. Thank you for helping maintain VideoSift's reliability.
The Horror Portfolio
IMHO
A Horror must have: Fear + Supernatural + Malice
Too much Constantine (action fantasy but no fear)
Also, too many Thrillers shown here which is a different genre from Horror. (Fear and malice but without supernatural.)

The problem with Guy Pearce is that you never know whether the film is going to be absolutely awesome (Memento for instance) or an absolute steaming pile of gangrenous, maggot ridden, shit... (errr, lots of his other stuff)
This looks like maggot shit to me. I'm turned off by any scene with a guy being unfazed by a series of merciless punches to the face. That shit will scramble your eggs. It takes me right into "this is a silly movie for Buffy fans" territory.
Found your comment funny, but don't forget that some films are good because of blatantly over trumped characters. I mean, i fucking love Starship Troopers, and it's crap in theory. Overly stoic hero - could work. Arny's pulled it off many times.
