well it's not easy discussing in comments like this, but thanks everyone for staying on track as much as possible.

all i can add at this point is: Watch Monty Python's Life Of Brian. It's the best explanation I know as to why some people opt out of dedicating themselves to just one interpretation of one ancient religion.

I could ask the classic question: what if you hadn't been born into a Mormon family?

It seems to me we need to separate "cultural heritage" from philosophy and theology.

I remember listening to a version of this on tape in high school... when you do weed out some of the absolute dross that a large amount of the Flying Circus was and distill it down there is absolute, almost timeless gold in there to be found.

Of course, then you get to their movies, and in particular Life of Brian, and you really DO have timeless comedy...

no nothing personal, i just was surprised by the reaction, i mean the strong negative reaction to somebody making fun of religious extremists... i thought that was perfect for the Sift. Pat Condell gets in the top 15 with hatespeech... oh well.

This is so weird, when i consider the other stuff on here that people don't find so inappropriate... like Life of Brian or Bill Maher.

Found that out about a month ago when I tried to sift it myself

It's not about uptight over picking on religion, it's like any topic that's sensitive generally. Religion and war are examples. It's not that it crossed a line, it's just difficult to make fun and it be generally appealingly funny.

Life of Brian (Monty Python) is an example where they made fun of christianity and it was brilliant.

I understand of course why anybody might be offended by an attack on their revered authority figure, but the overreaction to this book was ridiculous. Monty Python's Life of Brian is just as critical of Christianity.
