Rachel Maddow Show: You Can't Handle Evolution

entr0py says...

Exactly ElJardinero, I don't buy the explination that distributes have failed to pick it up because they're afraid they might receive too much free publicity.

It certainly couldn't be any more controversial then Religulous, which had a US distributor LAST YEAR. Or Dogma, or The Last Temptation of Christ, or The Life of Brian. Even The Da Vinci Code was more heretical then this.

"Work it out for yourself. You are all individuals. Don't let anyone tell you what to do!"
That is attacking faith in the most direct and effective manner that I've ever seen, and I say kudos!

>> ^spoco2:
It's not attacking 'faith', they aren't saying don't have some faith that there is a higher power etc. It's saying don't blindly follow some book. Look into it yourself, think about it, study, come to your own conclusions. If you end up then believing that there is a God, yeay for you. But to base your life on someone just telling you something is that way without questioning... That's what they're attacking, and it's very, very worth attacking.

You seem to misunderstand the word "faith". In the context of religion, it is believing in something without evidence. It is believing something because somebody in a position of authority told you something is true, and you fail to question it. If you work it out for yourself, you will see right through "faith" and see that right behind it is "lie".

The Life of Brian is such a wonderful movie, so full of fantastic humour, so NOT in any way attacking any faith at all, that it did such a great thing of showing all these humourless, dour individuals how wrong they were.

Not attacking faith? Brian's throng of followers are basically a direct attack on the fallacy of blind faith. The stoning of the blasphemer is a direct attack on the dangers of overzealous faith.
The movie is as much a send-up of religion as "Every Sperm is Sacred".

Don't let my username fool you, though, I went out and bought Life of Brian on DVD to replace my VHS copy when I tossed out my VCR, and I've got the Monty Python box set, etc, etc.
Grand piece of film. I'm particularly fond of the non-sequitur segment with the aliens and the "Romans go home" bit.

We have a lot to thank Python for. Not just great humour, but things like this which really challenged the scared and staid church and puritans.

The Life of Brian is such a wonderful movie, so full of fantastic humour, so NOT in any way attacking any faith at all, that it did such a great thing of showing all these humourless, dour individuals how wrong they were. That is to say, because there was no ill intent in it, in the long run and in the face of mass agreement from the populous as to it being a fine piece of work, those who saw it as any way blasphemous were demonstrated to just be scared individuals who lash out at anything they see that could possibly be saying anything against their precious little messiah.

Why I Love Monty Python

spoco2 says...

Ah yes, Jay says what's very true for me. Monty Python changed comedy and the Beatles changed music.

They are two HUGE influences on me growing up... With Monty Python it was never actually so much the Flying Circus, never really watched it. (Now when I do I see a lot of it was actually pretty average, it's only when you distill down the best bits that it seems like gold). It was the Python movies that I watched over and over as a kid. Life of Brian, the Meaning of Life, And Now for Something Completely Different.

And, well, Fawlty Towers (not Python directly, obviously)...

It's funny that it's my mother who is British, but my father who I get all these influences from.

Roast IX: Who the f**k is this guy? (Parody Talk Post)

EDD says...

OK, first of all, since when is a Sift Roast a charity event? I mean, for fuck's sakes, this guy is so pathetic, making fun of people named Biggus Dickus is more challenging. Besides, I'm fairly certain we'll have exceed the total sum of all his lifetime verbal conversations ("Hi..." "Piss off!" x 237) in this thread by noon tomorrow.

I mean, the hardest thing is to decide where to start.

This man is so utterly lonely he tries to pass himself off as a geek, and fails spectacularly. I mean, how does one fail at GEEK, the one label losers like me and you all around the world use to comfort ourselves that there might be a community somewhere that accepts and appreciates us?
For one, he's boasting how he's at the computer all round the clock as if it's some WoW achievement (if it is, I say it's discriminatory, as it effectively singles out people with no lives). Take a look at his hobbies (#23) - I mean, wow, it takes some serious effort to exclusively come up with ones you only do on a computer. And come on, he added a fucking ® to both Photoshop© and Adobe™ (same exotic symbol twice in a row, loser), because everybody cares about indicating trademarks on the Series Of Tubes. It's serious business!

His 'picture', if one is blasphemous enough of photography by calling it that:
Apart from the fact that he might as well be Jessica Alba (we'll never know, his shaky camera skills are effing l33t), it's additionally cropped to show off pixelation and camera noise, there's a shitload of unnecessary blur and even a fucking lens flare effect for goodness' sakes! And did I mention how hip it is to take photos of yourself in outstretched hands? LONELYPHAIL15, man. By the way, when you say you wouldn't like to be Fart-Man, I urge you reconsider. There's advantages - you'd be more likely to score ladies than you are now, for one. Also, cops/people on the street might mistake you for an entertainer or a mascot every once in a while.

And I don't mean to nit-pick here, but what the hell is this guy doing here anyway? Obviously, he's implying that out of the 33 boring videos he's sifted (I suggest you go downvote all of them so that he doesn't get his hopes up), he's yet to enjoy any of them, as this remains his ultimate goal (#30). He mentions another, "self-entertainment", which is followed by "lol". Congratulations on achieving that second goal on such short notice. Although I do immensely pity karkarlee if you're equally easy to satisfy in other areas.

Finally,
>> ^karkarlee:
^ 32. What made you pick Obsidianfire as a username?
I mean look at it: obsidian fire. Imagine black fire, that's fucking awesome emo.

Here's an image of black fire for you. Since it's obviously the most awesomest thing ever for you, I hope you experience your very first orgasm over it. Then you might actually not feel too guilty while reassuring karkarlee for the hundredth time that you're very experienced in this secksing business.

Other roasters: here's your dessert.

Richard Dawkins - "Hate mail" from god´s children (58 sec)

AnimalsForCrackers says...

I don't understand how some could call Dawkins "arrogant". Perhaps a misinterpretation on the part of the persecutees? When Dawkins is anything resembling "arrogant" it's usually very tongue-in-cheek, highbrow, sometimes lowbrow banter on the order of Monty Python's Life of Brian. It's hard to be constantly serious when you're dealing with people whose beliefs resemble other less savory beliefs in faeries, boogie monsters, and mogwai.

Of course, this flies right over most of their heads and thus Dawkins gets deemed to be this inhumane, fire-breathing-atheist-dickhead. Well, excuuuuuuuuuuuse me (one of them damn, dirty atheists) for pointing out the truth, Princess!

Edit: And wouldn't being merely one of God's omnipotent farts be pretty good in their book?
