Weird Al" Yankovic - Amusement

poolcleaner says...

Wait, that's just life though right? Are you not amused?? *BLAM -- the sound of a hammer hitting a nail that feels like a nerve and bleeds like a nose smiling back up with a thousand screams* And don't you dare step off that teacup. Don't you ever. Just open your mouth and HURL into the face of an onlooker. Enjoying yourself by the sidelines? Wait until I step off the ride and throw you into the way of an oncoming teacup. Now you're strapped in for the amusement. Ahaha ehehe

L.A.'s Spiciest Fried Chicken

Foodie: "WHY DID I DO THIS TO MY STOMACH AND MY ANUS?"

Reporter: "Congratulations, sir, you are now the foodie ninja warrior. What are you going to do?"

Foodie: "I'm going to Disneyland so I can ride the teacups to acid reflux!"

Reactions to Meteorologist That Was Told To Cover Up On Air

bareboards2 says...

I didn't watch this, since I find The Young Turks unbearable to listen to.

Did they include the information that the sweater was a joke? I can't find the clip now, but she made one talking about how the sweater was a joke between co-workers, that they do stuff all the time to rib each other.

When I first saw the clip, I had a similar reaction -- a cocktail dress for a morning show? Like wearing a formal gown to a sock hop. Weird.

But no reason to lose one's shit and send emails. Jeesh.

This isn't what I saw a couple of days ago, but it shows the support and disgust of her co-workers.

This, my friends, is the downside to the internet. Instantaneous outrage has an outlet. Tempest in a teacup. Hell. Tempest in a teaspoon.

Opinions in Japan of the White-Washing of Ghost in the Shell

Asmo says...

Oblivious to the issue? Or just "there is no issue"?

The exclusion of an Asian actor from auditioning for Death Note strikes me as wrong, but if the director is going for a certain aesthetic, it's hardly racial discrimination.

But irt GITS, Johanssen fits the aesthetic. Most of those asked noted that she resembled anime characters ergo it's fine. Seems to me that the furor is a bunch of white people deciding that because something was made in Japan, that it must be interpreted as "Japanese actors only", when even the Japanese see anime as apart from their own racial distinctiveness...

If the culture that produced the original IP doesn't have a problem with non-Japanese actors playing the role, isn't it a tad presumptuous for white people to get offended about it? \= )

Bit of a storm in a teacup really.

That's pretty endearing how oblivious all of them are to the issue initially.

Consent is actually easy to understand, yeah?

I can't believe he forgot to remind the viewers to put a condom in the teacup. If people say it tastes better without a condom, just refuse to drink it.

Consent is actually easy to understand, yeah?

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Australia Dogs Countdown

Asmo says...

Joyce is an ex farmer and one of the National party contributions to the Liberal/National coalition government at the moment. Blunt is probably a mild way to describe him. Another way would be remove the "bl" and replace with "c"... ; )

But yeah, this is another storm in a teacup caused by some dickhead saying something perfectly reasonable in the most creepy and unreasonable way possible.

A simple statement such as: "Mr Depp brought two dogs in without observing Australian quarantine regulations and has been notified that if he doesn't remove them within the next 50 hours, the dogs will be confiscated and unfortunately will need to be destroyed."

Taadaa, crisis fucking averted...

Joyce isn't sucking up to constituents, he's just being his usual charming self. The Nats are borderline irrelevant in this country now apart from making up the balance so the Liberals can actually manage to go toe to toe with Labor (the leftist party). Most Australian's saw this as Joyce being a colossal douche even while recognising that Depp did the wrong thing.

ps. Oliver is also completely wrong about the baby koala. You see those cold black eyes, dolls eyes? And you know how everything over here basically wants to murder the shit out of you in horrible ways? Tread warily lest you wake the sleeping giant...

why is my video getting buried (Sift Talk Post)

ChaosEngine says...

Dude, calm the fuck down. First up, you're entitled to your opinion, but your opinion (in this case) goes against the point of the site. Downvoting is an integral part of the sift.

Second, no-one is "covering up racism". It's not racism to say that those two dudes look alike. They do, and not because "they all look the same", but because they're both about the same age, with similiar skin tone, hair, facial hair and features.

Is it racist to say that these two people look alike? What about these two? or these two?

You're reading waaay too much into this and creating a storm in a teacup.

@ChaosEngine I take covering up racism very seriously. I also think down voting is abhorrent. WHICH I AM FREE TO DO.

You Probably Don't Need to Be on that Gluten-free Diet

bremnet says...

Yeah, that's true, I'm sure the burden of glutenophobics on our medical system and taxpayer dollars is right up there with hangnails and "it hurts when I do this". Tempest in a teacup. If I'm going to get pissed about something chewing up taxpayer dollars that's related to healthcare for stupid people doing stupid things, it sure isn't going to be gluten. How about, oh, I don't know, smoking. For the years 2009–2012, economic cost due to smoking is estimated to be more than $289 billion a year. This cost includes at least $133 billion in direct medical care for adults and more than $156 billion for lost productivity from premature death estimated from 2005 through 2009**.

Any stats out on the gluten hysteria and burden on health care? I think that cumulative is going to take a long time to show up on the graph, and the fad will likely have died before the next leap year.

Rape in Comedy: Why it can be an exception (Femme Talk Post)

spoco2 says...

This really is another storm in a bloody teacup.

@ChaosEngine brought up the perfect example of what's wrong on both sides of this type of thing with the Penny Arcade Sixth Slave comic debacle. That comic was absolutely innocuous. Having a slave say they were raped to sleep by dickwolves was merely a ludicrously horrible statement to show what a terrible existence the slave had, and why the player ignoring their pleas because they had fulfilled their quota was such a hilariously callous reaction.

To think that someone could read that and be offended, be offended enough to write a bloody blog post, is just stunning. It absolutely demonstrates a demeanour that's looking for the worst in everything and not the humour. I get that you may not find the comic funny, but to actually get riled up by it, to actually think it was worth telling people that you got riled up by it is stunning.

But then we get to the other ugly side of things. We have people who get angry at the people who got offended, and so they start attacking them (verbally), and start saying just horrible, mean spirited, ugly things. They start saying misogynistic, aggressive things that seem to demonstrate an ACTUAL core of anger/hatred towards women.

And that becomes scary.

So I think both sides are usually wrong in these cases:

* Those who get offended:
A lot of the time have very little reason to actually be offended (especially in the penny arcade example), it's as if they're attuned to their own little sphere of outrage and if someone mentions one of their keywords then they'll go nuts, regardless of the intent of a given joke.

* Those who made the initial joke and/or those who defend them:
Far, far, FAR too often they end up really attacking those that were offended, becoming vile and disgusting and not showing any restraint or compassion at all. Mike Krahulik demonstrates how NOT to handle something like the dickwolves incident. The correct way? 'Sorry you were offended by it, really don't understand how anyone could be, we're not taking it down as we don't see anything wrong with it. Let this be the end of it'. But nooo, he pushed and pushed and pushed it.

Louis CK, as usual, demonstrated that he can joke about horrible things and come up trumps because it's ALWAYS obvious that he's saying things in jest and from a good place (or for pure shock value). When someone says something so shit as 'It'd be funny if she was gang raped right now' without a damn strong demonstration that it was in jest and in no way meant to be mean or serious... well then that's a dick move and probably should be called out.

But for it to be as big as it's got? Gah!
