Naomi Klein -- How to Jam the Trump Brand

Why is THIS the power symbol? [LGR Retrospective]

vil says...

More like a stylised superimposed 0 and 1 for switching on from, and back to, a suspended mode.

So it's not really a power symbol, the device is powered when this switch is off.

Finally, Sean Spicer's Credibility Being Questioned Openly

ChaosEngine says...

Fair points, but I wasn't really talking about the symbolism. It's more about looking around and realising that you're fighting on the wrong side.

There's no way that Trump goes down in history as anything other than an embarrassment at best and a tyrant at worst.

Nice sketch I hadn't seen that one before. But skulls really don't have the same meaning today that they had back then. Cover yourself in iron crosses and skulls these days and people will ask you what metal band you play for.

And then we have an organization known the world over for it's good works and what's their symbol? A dying man nailed to a cross, I swear it sounds like something out of Game of Thrones.

Sorry, I have zero sympathy for Spicer.

At some point, you have to ask yourself why you have skulls on your caps.

On that note, I think a rat's anus is an appropriate symbol for Trump.

I feel a bit sorry for the poor bastard in a way, I mean look what he has to work with. A President who's a pathological liar and is so disconnected from reality that if he started hallucinating it might be an improvement. A sane person would have simply resigned from his position.
I think it would be awesome if someday the Press all decided to stop showing up to these things, the ultimate vote of no confidence, every thing you say is so devoid of meaning that we no longer need to hear it.

Should we Build a Wall? Great Walls through History

poolcleaner says...

Exactly -- or they become symbols of cold war oppression and are taken down as a political symbol. IIFFF this "Trump wall" gets finished, it will almost certainly be knocked down as a similar effigy to oppressive and ineffective bullshit in the not too distant future. I'm sure it will be considered unAmerican by ethnic nationals and a symbol of peace to EVERYONE ELSE in the entire world, including America.

Comedian Attacked By Woman

kceaton1 jokingly says...

It was the dick joke for sure, it hit WAY TOO CLOSE to home. Doesn't everyone agree? Why did I hit the sarcasm button again!?

--------
Now for those that wish to know a bit about that little monument...

I'll assume since he's a comedian he does actually know a bit about the Washington Monument (that is "typically" true for many comedians, they may make fun of something, but they tend to have a fairly in-depth knowledge of just what they ARE making fun of; though not always).

It is, of course, an obelisk. An obelisk was chosen for Washington (probably due to some of his Freemason views, who knows; they may have played a part--a decently big one in my eyes--lots of Washington D.C. is like that) as obelisks are some of the oldest structures in Egyptian culture--for George it was to mean this: "...to evoke the timelessness of ancient civilizations, the Washington Monument embodies the awe, respect, and gratitude the nation felt for its most essential Founding Father..."!

It was fairly hard in "its day" to make and complete; its original design was a HUGE undertaking but was scaled down along the way as resources and support dwindled. It took a very long time to finish and holds a great many distinctions, and most certainly isn't a, "...cement structure." (if you took that literally). It's marble and put together like a puzzle (kind of like brick and mortar, all the way up; a lot of it is marble--two different kinds, Pre-Civil-War, Post-Civil-War). For the time this was an actual engineering feat, from a degree due its height and size (when completed, it was the tallest BUILDING in the entire world--again explaining why it wasn't an "easy" build at all) and from there many of the "goodies" that were included within the project. BUT, the original design that would have made that monument quite different (not so "clean" or "empty") was changed by the final person with the say so, changing MANY details about the whole Monument from its original framework.

Look that up yourself, but one part is the fact that both the ground around it would be FAR different AND the Obelisk would look FAR different as it would be decorated with all the ornamentation, wording, symbolism, etc... From 1848 to 1884; from one idea to a fairly different one; one that was more attention getting and true to the Egyptian building, and their new ideas; to something different; a blank, clean look as it is now.

World's Best Party Magic Trick - Zach King

I'm using my frankness to inspire your eventual break from the repressive social attitudes of your ant regime. Magic is symbolic of the grand illusion of all societies. Especially ant society. Kind of scary, your hive's influence on us humans. It's such a blissful possibility being made part of one mind.

You can, but you need to use O.G. hyper text markup language (HTML) -- a href="" /a -- with proper greater than and less than symbols. For some reason I can't use the pre /pre html tags to show you the proper raw code. I'm sure a simple googley derp search will help you.

Anyway, welcome to the internet, n00b.

If I lived near there I'd be horribly tempted to paint another truck symbol on one of the supports every time it happened. A train trestle should be able to take pride in it's extracurricular activities.

I have absolutely no opinion about hidjab.

Unless it is shoved in my face as a symbol of implied superiority, at which point it becomes equivalent to a swastika tattooed on forehead. But then again, if you absolutely feel the need to go that way, good for you, just make sure you carry your religious and moral baggage. Like living your life with (one) religion first.

Ending Free Speech-Elizabeth Warren Silenced In Senate

dannym3141 says...

It's that balance between decent people and arseholes - it's always favourable to the arseholes.

In politics or any serious consideration, if an opportunist cheats there will be a small scandal - but it's to be expected of them, time passes and eventually they're credited for their ingenuity and resourcefulness. If a decent person cheats once, it can be held against them forever, a lifelong symbol of moral bankruptcy.

That's the difference between an arsehole and a decent person. Both types of people have some kind of moral balance, with "good" on one side of the see-saw and "bad" on the other side. The problem is, arseholes move the pivot closer to the "good" side when they're talking about someone virtuous - any bad counts double.

Before i get accused of insulting some group or other, the left and right and centre all have arseholes, it applies to every group. If someone wants to say that I'm biased, and "arseholes" say the exact same thing about me, only i'm the arsehole. Well i can certainly consider that, but if we were to search through all news items in the western world to see how the 'virtuous' are held to account compared to the 'non-virtuous', does anyone doubt which way that would go? For whatever agreed definition of virtuous.

I think it's about time the left started fighting dirty, personally. Go ahead and punch a nazi - i won't criticise you for violence. The little bastard wouldn't care if one of his mates punched me.

If something bad happens to them, they want you to moralise. If something bad happens to you, lol you're a fucking snowflake.

Top Democrats All Agree with Trump's Immigration Plan / wall

vil says...

Its basically all in the video, there are physical barriers already out there, it is a long term problem that has been improving lately, there is probably not much more protection a big wall would provide over a symbolic fence (only effect is length of tunnel/ladder required). Everyone agrees on illegal vs. legal, prostitution and drugs can not be eradicated, only limited, by making the little girls illegal you push them in peril. One could improve the situation by cooperating with the government of Mexico and border states, border towns, by making the legal waiting line clear and bearable, Trump is the elephant in the porcelain shop on all of this, making things worse.

Simple solutions to complicated problems... never mind.

Are americans really competing with illegal immigrants for jobs?
Is it that hard to get an education in the US that would get you past the dish-washing stage? IDK.

Why are the rules for employing illegal imigrants so hard to uphold? Could it be because it is impossible? Because no-one else would be willing to do the work for the money available in the local economy? How would the overall situation change if rules on "legalising" some of these people were relaxed instead of tightened? If they can hold a job for months or years without commiting any law violations besides going past the validity of their work permit they deserve at the very least permanent residence over all the trash living on social security just because they were born a few miles north.

If they are living and working and not doing any wrong, you should keep them regardless of... whatever.

BTW I happen to agree with what you wrote about that commercial 100%, Bob. Just probably from a different point of view. Its propaganda fairy-telling without a good point.

If I really wanted to move to the US I would make absolutely sure I had a plan on what to do there. Not just get in at all costs. Like the Budweiser guy (but better beer).

Liberal Redneck - Muslim Ban

enoch says...

@transmorpher
so when i point out the historical implications,i am somehow automatically disregarding the inherent problems within islam itself?

and your counter is to not only NOT counter, but refuse to acknowledge the historical ramifications, because that is some political, agenda driven-drivel.

that the ONLY acceptable argument is to focus on the religion itself, and ignore all other considerations,because,again..just tools to be used and abused by the left to fuel the far right.

am i getting this right so far?

that to include history is actually the path that stops that path to move forward?

and here i was still hanging on to that tired old adage "those who refuse to recognize history, are doomed to repeat it".

i am glad that you found those authors so respectful and admired their analysis and dedication to research, but you didn't even bother to use one of THEIR arguments.you simply made claims and then told us you read some books.

dude..now i am just kinda...sad for you.

i am sorry that you are oblivious to your own myopia, and that you are coming across as condescending.yet really haven't posted anything of value that you have to contribute.

you are just pointing the finger and accusing people of their arguments being dishonest, when it appears to me that everyone here has taken the time to try to talk to you,and your replies have been fairly static.

hitchens tried to make the case, and failed in my opinion(i am not the only one),but a case i suspect you are referencing.that even if we took the history of neoliberalism, colonialism and empire building OFF the table.islam would STILL be a gaggle of extremist radicals seeking a one world caliphate.

which is why i referenced dearborn michigan.
it is why i mentioned kabul afghanistan.

we are talking about the radicalization of muslims.
why are they growing?
where do they come from?
why do they seem to be getting more and more extreme?

which many here have attempted to answer, including myself.

but YOU are addressing and entirely different question:
'what is wrong with islam as a religion"

well,a LOT in fact and i already mentioned islams dire need for a reformation, but it goes further than that.you see the epistemology of both judiaism and christianity have been thoroughly argued over and over....and over..that what you find today is a pretty succinct refinement of their respective theologies.

agree/disagree..maybe you are atheist or agnostic, that is not the point.the point is that the so-called "finished' product has pretty clear philosophies, that adherents can easily follow.

for judaism this is in large part to the talmud, which is a living document, where even to this day rabbis debate and argue the finer details.not to be confused with holy scripture the torah.

christianity was forced to acknowledge its failings and flaws, because the theology was weak, and was becoming more and more an amalgamation of other religious beliefs, but most of all,and i think most importantly, the in-fighting with the vatican and the church of england had exposed this weakness, and christianity was on the brink of collapse due to its own hubris and arrogance.

they had no central authority.no leadership that the people could come to in order to clarify scripture.

so thanks to the bravery of martin luther, who risked being labeled a heretic, challenged the political power, which in those days was religious, and so began the process of reformation.

and also ended the dark ages, and western civilization stepped into the "age of enlightenment".

islam has had no such reformation, though is in desperate need of one.they had no council of nicea to decide what was holy canon and what was not, which is why you have more gospels of jesus in the quran than you do in the actual bible.

the king james bible has over 38,000 mis-translations in the old testament alone, whereas the quran has....well...we don't know, because nobody challenges the veracity of the quran.

am i winning you over to my side yet?
still think i am leftist "stooge' and "useful idiot"?

look man,
words are inert.
they are simply symbols.
they are meaningless until we lay eyes on them and GIVE them meaning.

so if you are a violent,war-loving person-------your religion will be violent, and warmongering.

if you are a peaceful and loving person----then your religion will be peaceful and loving.

the problem is NOT religion itself, and i know my atheists really don't want to hear that, but it's true.religion is going nowhere.

the problem is fundamentalist thinking.
the problem is viewing holy scripture as the unerring word of god.
which is why you see creationists attempt,in vain,to convince the rest of us that the earth is only 6,000 yrs old,and their only proof or evidence is a book.

so we all point and laugh.....how silly..6,000yrs old.crazy talk.

but WHY is the creationist so adamant in his attempts to defend his holy text?
because to accept the reality that the earth is not 6,000 yrs old but 14 billion yrs old,is to go against the word of god,and god is unerring, and if the bible is the word of god....and god is unerring.........

now lets go back to dearborn michigan.
if hitchens and harris are RIGHT,then that relatively stable community of muslims are really just extremists waiting for the angels to blow their horn and announce the time for JIHAD!!!

and,to be fair,that is a possibility,but a small one.

why?
because of something the majority of christians experience here in the states,canada,europe,australia...they experience pushback.

does this mean that america does not have radical christians in our midst?

oh lawdy do we ever.

ok ok..i am doing it again.
me and my pedantic self.

suffice to say:
islam IS a problem, even taken as a singular dynamic, that religion has serious issues.
but they are not the ONLY problem, which is what many of here have been trying to talk about.

ALL religions have a problem, and that problem is fundamentalism.which for christianity is a fairly new phenom (less than 100 yrs old) whereas islam has suffered from this mental malady pretty much since its inception.

ok..thats it..im done.pooped, whipped and in need of sleep.

hope i clarified some things with ya mate, but i swear to god if you respond with a reiteration of all your comments.i am going to hunt you down, and BEAT you with a bible, and not that wimpy king james either!
the hefty scofield study bible!

has rachel maddow lost her mind?

vil says...

No one knows what the clown is going to do on Monday. He will most certainly drop the sanctions at some point and let Putin keep Crimea. Ukraine is likely to stalemate long-term. If they can make a "good deal" he will hand Putin "eastern europe" on a plate. Never mind that he buys his brides there. RT just provides the philosophical sauce. These are whole countries full of human beings that are on the line, not some semantic details.

Rachel is a Hillary fan? What else is new?

The troops in Poland are purely symbolic. Troops are not necessary at this point. Commitment is important, but the clown is committed only to making himself look good.
What would be the point of getting Russian troops out of Eastern Europe if they could come back at will? How can you argue against NATO at the very time when Russia thinks it can take over any part of Europe that is not protected by NATO?

In any case you only want to publish stolen e-mails if there is something criminal in them. If not you are the criminal for stealing them.

If Hedges works for RT then he is a russian propagandist by definition. That does not mean that some of what he says cant be true.
