If You Detonated a Nuclear Bomb In The Marianas Trench

Lambozo says...

You all are right to call BS on this video. Its trash.

The earthquake that caused the 2004 tsunami in Sumatra released a total of 9 600 000 megatons of energy....that's a bit more than 50 megatons. I don't know though, I'm not a math major.

This earthquake didn't make new continents, nor did it cause an ice age by pushing earth a significant distance away from the sun. So I'm going to guess that neither would this bomb.

The portion of the 2004 earthquake's total energy that was released on the surface of the sea floor was only 26 megatons and it was released a lot less quickly than the detonation of the Tsar bomba, I'll give ya that.

Probably generate a Tsunami, but not a large one. Large natural tsunamis, like those in 2004 and 2011, are generated by very sudden movement of the ocean floor over a large area; the 2004 Sumatra quake lifted the sea floor several meters, very rapidly, along a 1600 km long section of fault, displacing a total of 30 cubic kilometers of water. Google "what does a cubic kilometer look like". Its a lot of water.

Not sure if the bomb can move that much water at a single site; I don't think it replicates the right "mechanics" of large scale tsunami generation....

SpaceX Iridium 4 Launch from Alhambra, CA

BSR says...

I lived in Cape Canaveral for 35 years. I watched all but 5 shuttle launches and many Delta, Atlas and other rockets. Each unique in it's own way. This launch was spectacular in that the lighting helped illuminate the plume in a way that normally is unseen in a bright sky or total darkness.

Another cool effect when conditions are right during a launch is when a rocket breaks the sound barrier while penetrating thin clouds. It creates what's known as a Sun Dog. The shock wave creates a ripple effect that resembles ripples going across the surface of water. The effect at night can be illuminated by the rocket's bright plume rather than the sun.

Thank you - from my entire being.

This year, from a year of effort, I'm in a better place financially, mentally, and in every way possible, looking at life with an improved outlook. It was a year of coping with change and improving on things. I would call this past year a success and a step forward. Which, for me, will make this Christmas that much better. I'll spend Christmas with my son and my daughter.

The best part is, I have more money for Christmas this year than any year previous, but I am spending the least and buying less gifts. The food will be less, but better quality. In my son's words, "You don't need to get me anything this year dad, with all you do for me through the year, every day has been like Christmas!" and from my daughter, I don't need a gift, what I want is to stay up all night with some snacks and play Game of Thrones RISK till the sun comes up".
Feeling blessed this year.

I hope your Christmas is the best ever. And your heart is filled with cheer.
Have an amazing "Holiday" Christmas season with what ever you choose and how you will celebrate it!

Cheers!

First Interstellar Asteroid Wows Scientists

bremnet says...

Uh, what? Nobody said that at all. It is neither a "classic example" nor an assumption. The trajectory has been tracked since it was discovered, which is hyperbolic around the sun, and the speed of the object is such that there is no way it could have accelerated to its current velocity due to the gravity of our sun alone, hence it has to be interstellar, picking up kinetic energy from another system outside of our own. The orbit is not improbable, it is unusual compared to trajectories of asteroids that exist within our own solar system. Sharpen your crayon there bud, and stop trying to impress people with your new thesaurus for hipsters (come on, "undergird"?? Really?)

They said they believe it is interstellar because of its improbable orbit. This is a classic example of the assumptions that undergird much of modern cosmology
