Behold The Majesty of Simcity GlassBox Simulation

aimpoint says...

All of the regular information sources were pointing at a failed DRM launch. Looking to beta sources can only get you so far, beta is a beta. Whose to say that a "bug" isn't a "feature". After playing the game for a bit, I can see that much of the "first impressions" done by reviewers who looked passed the DRM still didn't uncover some of the real underlying problems and instead were stuck on problems where there was a lack of understanding.
Example; Often the focus would be on things like "I have enough power, yet my buildings arent getting powered". Took me a little while to figure out that each building has a capacity that needs to get filled before it will stop sucking up power from the grid and allowing further buildings down the electrical grid to take in power.
I bought the game knowing I could live past most of the problems presented. (I play mostly on off-peak hours and my play style meant that it would take about 3-4 hours before I came close to maxing out the size of the city, compared to the commonly reported 1 hour)

I enjoyed the game for a while, it was a new and different type of simcity. But after a while, once the understanding of the mechanics settled in, there is an inherent problem with how the current game is running. It goes back to the original point of not enough focus on the actual game, even if the DRM, marketing mishaps, and community backlash/suppression is ignored.

Quadrophonic said:

Also, nobody forced you to buy the game. Problems like the restricted city size or the pathfinding were pointed out by many players who had access to the beta. And you can find these issues in almost every serious review to sim city, so it's not like you didn't have the chance to know that before you bought the game.

United States is the Most Corrupt Country in the World

PancakeMaster says...

Wow. Is he trying to get out of his weapons charges by sucking up to the mainland?

I'm all for supporting your country, but it should be transparent. There is an inherent risk of fooling yourself if you constantly say "we're the best, we're number one, we have no issues" when asked 'externally'. Scary stuff!

Also, there was no actual explanation to the accusation of the US' corruption. Just 'they brought down the world' or something like that.

Waterspout at Batemans Bay

zor says...

That's awesome to see. I once saw three at once but they were kind of far away. I have two questions for a waterspout meteorologist: -does it suck up salt water (fish) into the rain cloud? -does it ground the cloud and reduce lightening?

This has been sucking up way too much of my time. It just feels so alive. Also, leaves me more pissed a lot more than most games since you wanna have the least casualties as possible. I have to watch my temper with this one.

Is all this Mitt bashing this week just to cover up the failed Obama relations with the Muslims shit going on in the middle east?
Obama knew 3 days in advance about this and blames a piss poor video.

Just a thought but, how did Obama fail with relations with Muslims? I'm no Obama supporter but it doesn't seem to me like he could control the entire middle east and when he was "nice" to Muslims everyone in America kept calling him a Muslim or a Islamic Apologist or something like that.

SO what exactly was he supposed to do? Invade more cities or suck up more?

politically incorrect with bill maher-marilyn manson 1997

Lakita thinks that by talking non-stop and over everyone else that she will somehow be proven correct. You can see at the end that she is just sucking up all the air she can and has nothing of any substance to say.

A Look at Windows 8 - It's Almost not Terrible

KnivesOut says...

We're heavily encouraged to dog-food because we're such a tightly integrated Microsoft shop (we have a lot of contact with MS employees, so it's a nice way to suck up to them I guess.)

The improvements to Explorer are the only thing that makes me want to go. All of my coworkers are upgrading their Windows 7 workstations to 8, but I'm not feeling it, not yet.

Biochemist creates CO2-eating light

newtboy says...

>> ^GenjiKilpatrick:
Wow that's a large wall of text, @newtboy.
But yes, it appears that:
"Calleja has developed a lighting system that requires no electricity for power. Instead it draws CO2 from the atmosphere and uses it to produce light as well as oxygen as a byproduct. The key ingredient to this eco-friendly light? Algae."
I guess that's why the video empathized that Calleja has been a biochemist for twenty years. i.e. years of research have helped developed a strain of algae with such properties
Apparently the electricity the algae produces is stored in a battery underneath the unit.
http://www.geek.com/articles/geek-cetera/biochemist-creates-co2-eating-light-that-runs-on-algae-2012055/

It appears that this is NOT the case...which is why they redacted the claims here...http://www.earthtechling.com/2012/04/algae-powered-street-lamps-suck-up-c02/
(thanks entrOpy) Don't believe everything you read, especially if the writer is looking for investors!
...and I think you meant emphasized, but maybe they did empathize with him about something and that's why they agreed to re-print his unverified, improbable, sometimes completely wrong claims. *edit-after reading other articles and comments, I find that others claim Calleja is NOT known for being a leading biochemist, but instead is a businessman, which makes me even more warry of his claims.
Also, did no one else notice the name of the company...shame-an(d)-go, is that a play on words describing their actions?
Sorry for the wall of text, there were a lot of mis-statements and implications that needed pointing out and correcting. Science is rarely simple.

Biochemist creates CO2-eating light

entr0py says...

>> ^newtboy:

The written description said 'with no electricity for power', but the video clearly shows an electric light in the center of the tank...not bioluminescent, electric. They tell you it only works 'in a lighted aquarium'. You even see the operator plug it in and the light turn on at :32, and again at :40, with the electric cord also clearly visible. The audio never claims the device or the algae MAKES light or electricity, only that it takes in CO2 and releases O2. The video of the garage version also shows this clearly, with the plain fluorescent lights turned on while they add the algae to a fish tank.

If you follow the chain of reposting and adding more sensational claims that goes through shashdot and their source geek.com you eventually arrive at this site, which has already redacted it's claims about the algae in the lamp producing any light or power.

Going only from what's said in the video, I think the entire point is carbon sequestration. But keep in mind the algae is also absorbing some of the light from the lamp, requiring the use of more lamps to light the same area.

I got to 1:48 where he said, "Liberals say tax the rich and that will do it."
Umm...I don't remember ANYONE saying that that is enough. It's not.
Cut military spending DRASTICALLY!! AND tax the rich and corporations.
To be fair @surfingyt doesn't say if he thinks this is true, he (she?) just posted a video.
@GenjiKilpatrick -- No, he hasn't stopped his "self-help" racket.
He's helping himself to a big ol' bag of PAC money.
Downvote.

I agree that cutting military spending is an area that does need to be addressed quite seriously, not sure what it is now, but last i heard it was more than 2 Trillion a year (correct me if wrong).
If the military is still contracting out to those $$companies that suck up the funding and do stupid wasteful stuff like buying/building new trucks instead of repairing few-month old trucks because they make a bigger profit, then that needs to stop immediately.. military's should not be privatized like that.

In saying that I also think it's unwise to take out all the government armed forces funding as a country still needs to defend itself for it's citizens security, especially if they've pissed off a bunch of other nations. But the extent of the funding the US engages in is well past an obsessive degree and needs to be pulled into line.

Large corporations being taxed at low rates and in a lot of cases not even being audited for tax evasion (as TYT mentioned recently) is disgusting when the poor get smashed by taxes and audits.

You'll Never See THIS On MSNBC. People Line Up For A Job

alcom says...

This story is from July last year. I wonder why MSNBC didn't cover it - I tried to search through the news archive and came up with squat. I bet conservatives who argue that Obama has created the "food stamp" generation wouldn't want this to air, because it shows that people are desperately looking for work and not at home slack, sucking up rich benefits from their socialist leader.

Ford Motor Company didn't get a bailout, but they did receive a $5.9 billion loan from the department of energy.
