I finished up the season. Really enjoyed it, and I only successfully guessed a couple plot points in advance. It's pretty wild. If you liked Dark, or mind-bending stuff in general, you'll likely dig the show. There's a huge Season 2 setup, so it better get one!

Fairly non-spoilery: holy redshirts, Batman! Srsly...

Sweet Zombie Jeebus.
In 2014, when Biden was VP, Tucker and Susie Carlson wrote to Hunter begging him to pull some strings to get Tucker’s son into Georgetown University…ending their letter with “Tucker and I have the greatest respect and admiration for you. Always!”
Loves Hunter when he needs something, hates him with a passion now that he’s useless. Same Hunter.

Tucker’s child is now a communications director for a far right senator, a position for which he has zero experience, hired right out of college as a staff assistant at $40k (nice cushy entry job), quickly increased to $65k, 6 months later became communications director for $75k, which was quickly and quietly raised up to $130k. Not normal.
There’s no doubt at all that he was hired and advanced solely to gain favor with Tucker and the ultra Maggots. Tucker just publicly lambasted the entire office he works in because someone dared to mention he wasn’t there on his merits, he’s there because his daddy can help your campaign…he can’t even stand up for himself and needs daddy to come bully all his workmates because one said something completely true about him.

You might keep that in mind the next time Tucker gets you riled up about Hunter….Tucker went begging to Hunter, asking for special treatment for his son and groveling because he really believes it’s all who you know and who you’re related to, not ability, that should determine success. Tucker doesn’t believe in meritocracy for himself or his family. None of you do.

Today’s MAGA vote fraud….

Illegally sent how many stolen active military ballots to which Republican Senator in a secret under the table on her own free time “exposure of election insecurity”, problem being they didn’t expose it when they thought they had been successful, only when they got caught with the ballots did the “exposing insecurities” nonsense excuse come up.
Also, what about the active military that had their votes stolen, even if they weren’t cast? Their ballot was stolen making it impossible for them to vote. Hard to reconcile stealing military votes for some secret investigation that remained secret after producing the “proof” they wanted (but in reality they only proved that people trying this scheme, even with top level access and authority were still unsuccessful and were caught)

Wait and see…how many of those ballots were mailed in filled out for republicans? Right now, it could be thousands, or none at all. I know which I predict. It’s MAGA, so think the worst, then double down.

Brainwashed

Oops this turned into a semi rant. But I am legitimately open to discussion here, and am curious to get your thoughts on a few points Bob. That is, IF you're willing to actually think about them beyond the level of repeating talking points.

I find it interesting how divergent the two overall "sides" are in this country, in terms of where they focus. None of the issues brought up in this video are really on the radar of most progressives, beyond being aware some on the right are talking about them. And I'm guessing a lot of the concerns progressives discuss rarely come up in your chosen media landscape. A lot of the issues in the video are largely off of my radar, and I have to wonder how you feel they should be addressed - like, actual proposed solutions rather than just complaining about / worrying about them.

We only dedicate one day to remember our fallen soldiers

How many should there be? Arguably we have more than one already: there's Memorial Day and Veterans Day, and it seems that Sept 11th is often used for the purpose as well.

I'd argue we should spend more time acknowledging and understanding the principals behind WHY our soldiers died in the various conflicts which caused them to fall in the first place. Let's make sure our citizenry appreciates what we collectively rejected in the Revolutionary war. Why it was important that we kept the country together rather than allowing the south to split off in the mid-1800s. Why we chose to honor our diplomatic agreements and support our allies in WW1. Why we fought against the countries and governments we did in WW2. What our goals were in Korea and Vietnam, and what lessons we learned from those conflicts and from the Cold War in general. Commemorating and remembering those we've lost absolutely matters, but if we're ONLY doing that while forgetting why they fought OR ignoring what we learned then we're doing them an equal or greater disservice. Remember that America was built on the idea of forming "a more perfect union" - not a perfect one, a MORE perfect one - a work in progress. We're striving towards an ideal, not assuming we're already there. Learning from our past successes, failures, and our struggles around both outcomes is vital. If our self-analysis is no deeper than hero worship we'll never make real progress towards that theoretical perfect union.

The only mask that's gonna save us is duct tape on their mouths

Yeah, sound medical advice and evidence-based science is terrifying. Better to shut up those whose words we dislike, because we're reactionary authoritarian babymen. I truly do not understand being more afraid of reasonable safety measures than of a virus which has been shown to cause serious harm in the short and long terms. The only reason this "masks = liberal / maskless = conservative" crap came about is because politics has devolved to the level of team sports in the US, and one party has chosen "the opposite of whatever our political opponents say" as their entire governing philosophy. (And yes, ONE party - research and understand the GOP's 2020 platform if you want to argue the point.) This video even seems to reach a reasonable conclusion at the end, while coming up just short of that final logical leap to "maybe I should question what the public faces of MY side have been claiming in this Us vs Them madness." Seriously - keep going friend, you're almost there! George Washington was 100% right in wanting to avoid political parties being a force in the US, and it makes me immensely sad that his fears came true.

Big oil runs the world / the only wars to get fought are with the countries who have natural resources they want

Solid point here, no sarcasm. The US military has long been a tool of our profit-driven form of "free market" imperialism. A really great way to combat this, specifically with an eye to ending Big Oil's goddamn death grip on our foreign policy goals, would be an aggressive implementation of renewable energy projects. Remember the space race? America can be an absolute beast at clever engineering solutions when we dedicate ourselves to it. Fuck the petrostates, we have the available land and resources to absolutely kick ass in the realms of solar and wind power, and be leaders in the the post-hydrocarbon reality. We can certainly agree on that, right Bob? Left / Right nonsense fully aside, I think any reasonable American can agree on at least two points: let's stop sending heaps of cash to buy oil off of the Saudis (etc), and Fuck Cancer.

But if a white man acts too white he's white trash / he's a racist he's a bigot he's a monster

What the fuck is this horseshit? What does "acting too white" even fucking look like? Watching NASCAR on a sailboat while listening to polka? Typically when I see racism from white people it's in the form of denying that brown-hued people deal with any additional difficulties in life due to their skin tone, or denying that there have been structural obstacles for them through history, or lamenting that their white children are being burdened with a broader lens on culture or with (gasp! shock!) an accurate accounting of actual US history, including the ugly bits that we shouldn't be proud of (but MUST learn from). I'm progressive / lefty as fuck and there is no aspect of "white culture" or "acting white" which upsets me in the slightest. UNLESS one counts "denying racism exists / has ever existed" as a fundamental value of being white. Which... why would anyone want to claim that nonsense? If you want to listen to classic country music in a rusty pickup truck while driving to an evangelical church, then discuss hockey over Buds after 18 holes with the rest of your tractor pull team, then absolutely go nuts my fellow caucusoid! Just recognize and understand that your life experiences may not be the same as those of others. Further, if we care about trying to avoid unnecessary, avoidable unfairness in life (recognizing that life will never truly be fair, for anyone), then it might be reasonable for some governmental / legal / structural recognition in furtherance of that notion. There is absolutely room for legitimate policy disagreement here without being accused of racism. It's denial of others' reality which tends to garner the label of racist (sexist etc) - steer clear of denying the lived experiences of other people, allow for the possibility they may have encountered difficulties you haven't / won't, and we've room for further discussion.

Edit / final point: I voted the video back up to 0 from the -1 where I found it. Because while I disagree with a lot of the positions taken by the performer, they may have reached them through no fault of their own and with no true malice. Misinformation / disinformation is a devious shit of a motherfucker, and the rot it causes can run deep. It is painful to abandon deeply-held beliefs, on a fundamental level. If nothing else, the video gives us room to discuss some specific viewpoints held by people who think of themselves as good, but which can lead to harm.

Beau schools on schooling: why 'FREE' scares Biff & Babs

newtboy says...

1) in the 50’s, the time period MAGA wants to return to, colleges were often free with higher admission standards. Do you advocate free college for anyone qualified?

2) there’s a shock

3) that goes for abortions too, if you really want it you’ll find a way, but the “ways” left are all dangerous.

4) you said he was successful despite the fact that he left high school to support his family before…but ok, now he graduated public high school, and is the smartest man you know. Telling.
My mother graduated Rice university Suma Cum Laude then returned for a masters in English. Dad graduated in the top 1% of his class from Stanford with a chemistry major, then started a highly successful international high tech insulation company making insulation for nuclear power plants in the 70’s. (Your dad may have worked for my dad. Is his name Frank F?)

5) Neither could have succeeded as they did if they had to pay today’s rates for college, or if each had hundreds of thousands in debt to pay back. Both scored 1590 on their SAT. Neither got scholarships or loans (Rice was free, dad’s parents and part time jobs paid for Stanford). Neither “fucked around”.

6) Colleges charge more because people will pay it, because a degree is an absolute necessity to be successful in the business world (unless you inherit tens of millions). If you drop the amount people can borrow for school, they’ll just accept intellectually poorer students (like you) that CAN pay. Supply and demand….that doesn’t mean you discount your in high demand product because your preferred customer can’t afford it so long as someone can. Duh.

bobknight33 said:

1)Truly there should be a helping hand to bright students who can't get a scholarship, loans to to to higher education.

2) I was poor student , didnt care about it got low grades.

3) Dads motto -
IF you want something bad enough you will find a way.

4) Dad was a HS grad and was writing quotes for Navy Nuclear and many other million $ bids. Smartest man I know.

5) higher education should place a finical burden on you - You will work harder because you can't afford to fck around.

6) That being said college / universities are over charging and raping students more and more every year.

? do college charge more because they know that the student can get the loan? I think so.

I think If you drop the amount a student can get in loans I sure tuition will drop to that level --- Supply and demand.

Pelosi gets under Trump's skin in the most brutal way

newtboy says...

No, sorry, you’re thinking of Trump. More projection.
Turned his back on the attack he fomented, and Americans died defending democracy from MAGA.
Clinton did her job well with the information at hand. She didn’t turn her back like Trump undeniably did, she simply didn’t foresee the future when terrorists would pick one embassy to attack instead of one of the other 255 embassies and consulates. Since she testified for days without once pleading the fifth and no one hid what happened at any of the 10 purely partisan illegitimate hearings about it, unlike every person in cowardly Trump’s circle, we know without a doubt she did not turn her back, nor was she in any way responsible for the 4 Americans who died. You might want to educate yourself.
Republicans admitted plainly and publicly that the only purpose was to defeat her politically, so they consider the never ending hyper partisan extremely expensive hearings that 100% exonerated her a success. I believe the costs ran well over $200 million tax payer dollars for their political commercials couched as “hearings”.

Trump turns his back on constitutionality, civility, rationality, transparency, and reality….he hides everything that happened in the whitehouse, instructs public servants to refuse subpoenas, don’t testify, hide steal and destroy evidence, and don’t in any way cooperate in investigating the viscous violent terroristic attack against America and democracy he personally led to seize power. He said for decades only criminals plead the fifth, you agreed….every person from his administration subpoenaed has pleaded the fifth as has he….you don’t see the connection.

Also, let’s not forget the extra 1 million Americans that his own CDC said died needlessly because Trump turned his back on the pandemic. He’s infinitely more responsibility for 250000 times more deaths after dismantling Obama’s pandemic response team and ignoring Covid, and his plan was to double that number of dead Americans by opposing any public health measures and never locking down.
Remember-
“I know all grandparents agree with me. Grandma and grandpa will be happy to die to get America back to work in weeks instead of months…they WANT to die for America. Get back out there and let the elderly take care of themselves.”
🤦‍♂️
Party of millions of deaths, more pedophilic debauchery in the extreme daily, and the continuing attempted destruction of democracy in America by force…that’s you, friendo. Derp.

Such idiotic rewriting of history, bob. There were 10 illegitimate partisan hearings that she cooperated with over something that, had every accusation been true, still wasn’t criminal. For Jan 6, a deadly coup at Trump’s public direction on American soil that killed MORE Americans and was a DIRECT ATTACK AGAINST AMERICAN SOIL BY TERRORISTS, you say “nothing burger”, proving how unserious, irrational, and a full fledged cultist you are.

Good thing they shot that Traitorous cunt Ashley Babbitt, Bob says you shouldn’t have fucked with police, sweetheart.

Transgender Rights II: Last Week Tonight with John Oliver

newtboy says...

Yes. Kids are capable of understanding these concepts at very young ages if you’re just honest with them and don’t dance around facts. It’s the lies, obfuscation, misdirection, and misinformation that makes them confused and prone to stupid permanent decisions and unhealthy/unsafe experimentation.
Just say no was an abject failure. Same with abstinence only sex education. Every attempt to hide the facts from kids ends with kids finding out the hard way.
What’s more, it’s often painfully obvious when a child born with male genitalia has a female brain, and vice versa, and stopping or delaying puberty is a reversible way to make their transition as adults much more successful and less invasive. There’s no legitimate reason to oppose that type of reversible treatment when everyone involved agrees it’s called for.

No. Ignorance ALWAYS does more harm than good….as do palatable lies.

Keeping kids ignorant leads to dangerously ignorant adults….something you know about.
More knowledge is always better and leads to informed, well considered decisions.
More ignorance is always worse and always leads to kids making uninformed decisions, often horrible decisions.

But the GOP says “to keep ‘em dumb, get ‘em young.”

The idea that informing curious children that their sex can be altered (with years of difficult, very expensive treatments and eventually painful risky surgeries after years of long term psychological counseling and doctor consultations) is “grooming” them, is convincing them to alter their sex, is moronic and says WAY more about those that claim it than they understand.
Did you want to change your sex from the first time you heard it was possible? Is that why right wingers say they think that? It’s the only logical conclusion.

Sad you are still incapable of addressing the traitor Ashley Babbitt who fucked around with police and found out. That says volumes.

Just going to slink away disgraced again?
No admission that you have political history 100% backwards, accusing Gore of trying to stop the 3rd (re)count against Bush (the first two having been sabotaged by Florida officials intentionally not following election laws) which is ridiculous nonsense (and why I’m forced to ridicule your ignorant, self serving, and 100% wrong position), also accusing phantoms of trying to stop the count against Trump. Never happened, no one even tried to stop a recount, eventually they did say enough, but not before multiple recounts and investigations. Stopping the fifth recount after getting the same results 4 times is not even related to trying to never count tens of millions of valid legal votes like Trump and the Rebs.

Trump tried to stop the first count, insisting on not counting mail in votes because he knew they would be mostly for Biden because Democrats believed Covid was dangerous and not a mild cold so voted by mail and not in person by and large. Not counting votes is cheating, fool. Disenfranchising tens of millions of valid voters for no reason besides you lost the valid election is criminal.

Yes, we are at the point that if a state legislature cheats, it counts, and this bill will fix that.
It is brilliant, so brilliant that it also exposes the blatant anti democracy, anti American position the right currently holds. Dozens of right wing media personalities are actually suggesting forcibly installing Trump as president and ending elections completely. It proves that Republicans don’t care a whit about election security because they want all loopholes and lapses in security left intact for them to try to exploit again, hoping next time they’ll be successful at ending democracy in America…undeniably and indisputably. It also proves how shortsightedly idiotic you are by not considering that Trump won’t live forever.

Your guys, your team, firmly dictatorial, draconian, and anti democracy. Clearly trying to preserve their method of cheating. And you support it by reversing reality again. Brilliant.

Democrats tried to stop the Bush count and also the Trump count.

But when Republicans try to stop the Biden count you cry like little bitches.

So now we are at the point that IF a state cheats it counts. Brilliant.

bobknight33 (Member Profile)

newtboy says...

Um….what? This stops any state from cheating and requires they send electors for the candidate that won more certified votes.
Today, without the bill, if a State legislature cheats like dozens of Republican legislatures did in 2020, there’s a good chance it’s still official….that’s what you want, the ability for dishonest Republican legislatures to pick the state winner, not voters.
This stops unsubstantiated claims of cheating from being enough to overturn an election…it stops anti democratic frauds like the ones Trumpsters tried in 2020 from being in any way legal.

Are you brain damaged? Democrats wanted the recount, Bush won because it was halted. Gore sued for recounts, Bush sued to stop them. YOU MORONIC IMBICILE.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2000_United_States_presidential_election_recount_in_Florida
Holy fucking sheep shit buddy. You have everything totally backwards and upside down. It’s a shock you aren’t dead from shoving steak in your asshole and trying to shit out your neck.

This time Republicans tried to stop the count, not a recount, not a second recount, but the initial count of valid certified votes….also, moron, history lesson..republicans and the conservative court stopped the recount in 2000, not Democrats….after 1/4 of Florida counties failed to complete a legally required machine recount Gore sued for hand recounts and Bush successfully blocked them, that’s why Bush “won” despite not getting more votes. Are you really so insane you think Democrats stopped the recount that had them ahead, handing unearned victory to Bush? You probably are.

Tried to stop the Trump count? What the everloving fuck are you making up now? Clinton conceded the day after the election (after she won with 3 million more votes), no one tried to stop the count, you moronic liar. WHAT!?!

Again…WHAT? What do you mean by the meaningless “if a state cheats”? That’s some meaningless nonsense speak….define this chimeric right wing term. This bill STOPS state legislatures from cheating, ignoring the vote and sending electors they choose. That STOPS cheating, it doesn’t allow it. It also still lets congress to invalidate electors if there’s corruption…but by 2/3 vote not just one.

You’re smoking too much meth again. Derp.

ROTFLMFAHS!!!

Bongino….what did he say about the ongoing successful raid on Maralago, where Trump previously admitted taking boxes and boxes of top secret classified documents he stole from the whitehouse and kept them unsecured in unlocked, unguarded rooms but refused to turn them over to investigators?
He parroted Trump, saying “Third world bullshit.”. Sorry, but in the third world, they don’t get warrants and wait over a year for disgraced politicians to turn over top secret documents they stole and were directed by the courts to produce. They just murder him and his family and take them.

Courts demanded in 21 that every document be produced for examination and any secret or top secret documents must be returned immediately without copies being made. Trump and his team produced a few pages and claimed they were still looking for the other 15 boxes of classified documents they had misplaced (handed to Russia?).

It should be noted, the FBI has already said they found at least some of those classified documents in this raid and recovered them….meaning not only was the raid by the book, but the stolen property was in fact recovered from Trump’s residence. D’oh!!

Unauthorized removal or retention of classified documents is a federal crime punishable by up to five years in prison per offense. Ask Snowden, or Manning. Trump had over 15 boxes of these stolen secrets….lemme guess…nothing burger, right? But Clinton retaining some sensitive (not secret or classified) documents should be a life sentence.

The only third world bullshit is the disgraced ex president that tried to turn America into a third world dictatorship and the anti American cultists that are still helping him do it.
