In Chiba, where I live, they do have a recycling program but it could use improving. For example, you'd be amazed at how many types of plastics are considered "burnables" here. However, they do have clothing recycling which comes ones every two weeks. I'm told the clothes are given to needy folks in Japan or sent as donations overseas if they are still in good enough condition, which is pretty cool.

Second-hand stores here have gotten really big recently--two opened in my area in the four years I've lived here. Used book/manga/game stores have always been big but these new places stock everything you can think of including kitchen appliances, surfboards, etc. They pay utter crap and turn the items around for ridiculous mark-up, but given how stuffed from floor to ceiling with items they are, clearly people are using their services regularly. We actually have gotten lots of great children's toys for our daughter from them--stuff that retails for $40 (US) or more we've picked up for $5 or less in excellent condition. Also picked up a mini-fridge for the office for cheap.

This is awesome! Does anyone know if Japan has a good recycling program? I'd like to think that they are not wasteful.

Ruby Rhod's Evening Show - The Fifth Element

robbersdog49 says...

It's great to watch a film that doesn't feel it has to explain itself all the time. So much stuf was just a given in this film. I wish more directors would do this.

Oh yeah, fifth element is love. It doesn't have to make sense, it's just cute

Jinx said:

This film is so scatter brained and the story is so fucking ham. I mean really, the fifth element is life or something? Virtually nothing is explained the characters are completely OTT and unrealistic...and I fucking love it. Wish there were more films like it.

Hello Kitty in space

My own personal penchant for launching stuff into space has never died...The stuff we used to do would get us put on the terrorist watch list nowadays.

Estes, inc. has had quite a deal of business from me over the years!

If you get a chance, read his book "Never Have Your Dog Stuffed". It is basically his life story, starting with the line "My mother didn't try to stab my father until I was six."

The Evolution of MechWarrior: 1989 - 2012

Loved mechwarrior 2, remember it being cool, and that music.. I will have to pick the soundtrack up.

My memories of 4 are limited mostly to standing in water so my mech stuffed full of ER laser's wouldn't simply explode when I tried firing them.

Testing Babies for Moral Choices

Quadrophonic says...

Speaking of how hardwired we humans come into existence, I once read something about a study that they did with newborn babies. Like just some days old newborns. They put these two items above these kids, so that they could look at them while they lie in their beds and tracked the babies eye movements. The two items where a little car, made of metal and a nice round sun (like a stuffed animal). The interesting thing they found out was that the majority of the male babies looked way more often and longer at the car, whilst the majority of the female babies looked at the sun.
It's quite impressive to see how predestined we are.... some people are just born car mechanics.

Let's talk about *Promote (Sift Talk Post)

spoco2 says...

I too dislike the new promote mechanic. I had no issue previously with the number of promoted videos that were there.

I've just in the last week or so allowed myself to 'discover' reddit, and now I'm spending time there that I used to spend here... and so I offer some comparisons:

Videosift Pros:

* Huge pro is the lack of duplicates. Repetitive content on reddit is really quite tiresome

* Tight community, we 'know' each other moreso than the huge mass that is Reddit

Videosift Cons:

* As of the update in particular, a loss of focus on comments. It used to be that the number of comments and link to them was large and below the text description of the video, now it's gone from there and only shown as a tiny icon under the thumbnail. I'm FAR less drawn to the comment sections here now, I just don't notice the link any more.

* The promote system used to be a great way to get an old video and bring it back to people's attention, and without fear of stuffing up other people's videos that were there. I used to wait if there were already heaps sitting in there, for a time when it was less crowded, and I think this worked well. Now that there are always three videos there there's no real idea of how 'busy' it is, and I'm not going to check how long any of them have been up there, that's 'work' to find out. Basically it's broken. A queue system where you're told that your video has not yet made it to the front page, but is queued to be shown in 'x' hours or minutes would be great. Then any video gets a minimum of time in the promote spot, but can potentially stay up there longer if no videos are in the queue. And yes, the way they're currently displayed is lacking compared to 'normal' videos.

The main reason I really come to videosift is for the discussions, and with them being pushed to the back now in this design, I am feeling less and less inclined to come by.

Crazy, I just started my vegan diet today as well. I am excited, I had stuffed grape leaves (rice, onion, dillweed, and mint in a nice lemony sunflower oil) for breakfast I know that is weird but I really wanted em. Then for lunch: paradise island tempeh (orange juice, agave, ginger, coconut, lime juice, cilantro, cashews, pineapple, green onion, a minuscule amount of jalapenos mixed in rice... it was goooood) and a side of mixed broccoli, water chestnuts, snappy green peas and ginger. Then dinner was just a carrot and shitloads of dates. I have a feeling dates are going to be a major reoccurring theme YUM

You should get some dates, they help with DOODOOO and they taste like little caramel treats!! And they are good for you, I cant even believe it! Why have they hid from me for so long?!!

You gotta send me recipes!!!

Election predictions? (Election Talk Post)

SlipperyPete says...

I predict there will be a lot of evidence of ballot box stuffing, with exit polls not aligning themselves with vote counts. This will happen at a far higher rate in precincts with electronic voting tabulation.

I woke up this morning after a bad dream: that Romney had won. Not because more people voted for him, but because the systems that count ballots favour him and his politics.
