Outcry in China over hit-and-run toddler left in street

It has nothing to do with martial rule. China's repression is notorious, but only aimed at politically sensitive topics.

As a matter of fact, China's repression is notoriously aimed at everything that moves. Never heard of the countless stories of chicken thieves sentenced to death? Or of the citizens petitioning the local government over some company dumping stuff in the river, only to get harassed by the cops, because the CEO has connections with The Party?
In China, the police and Justice are famously ineffective and corrupt. To keep up the appearance of strength, they will come down hard on anyone they catch, regardless of their crime or even their guilt. If you are a regular folk, you have no money or connection so you'd better keep quiet if you don't want trouble. Basically if you're a crook, you have less chance to get in trouble than if you make your voice heard. And once again, I'm not saying this explains this specific story, I'm saying this doesn't make for a sane society.

People have this idea of China still being some sort of Stalinist state. It is not. It's the Wild West over there, and the robber barons are in charge.

It is comforting to be in denial, to blame this on our differences. There must be something wrong with THEM; this could NEVER happen in OUR civilized society.

Mmm, maybe you're reading a bit too much in what I said? To the question "dictature or culture", I pretty much answered "not culture". For all you know, I could be Chinese. And that kind of thing could very well happen in an European society; case in point: the "whatever happens, walk by and pretend NOT to notice ANYTHING" attitude reminded me of Central/Western Europe under Communist rule more than anything else. This has left that kind of stigma there to this day (Russia: non-white baby stabbed in stroller in the middle of the street in broad daylight? Sorry, no witnesses!).

>> ^Diogenes:

i have seen and even experienced the same in taiwan, which is democratic. the culture simply puts less value on a human life and welfare than many westerners do... you can see it in their medical system (universal health care is not what you might think here)

Your story about the good Samaritan getting sued on the spot for helping, I do get (if you were talking about mainland China), because I've seen that kind of story several times in reports covering this news here (to explain why people would not stick their neck out).
However the part about Taiwan, care to back that up? Taiwan has the standard of living of Western Europe, and they in fact do have universal health care, something which cannot be said of the USA for example.

Two babies being saved from a hot, locked car

@smooman, do you have kids?

no i dont, not any of my own anyway. i do have two nieces for what its worth. but before you say it, cuz i know youre gonna, the fact that i do or do not have kids holds no relevance to the fact that Legacy0100 justified leaving children in a hot car because "theyre too heavy and strollers are a hassle". if kids are too heavy and strollers are too much of a "hassle" what fucking god damn business would you have having kids in the first place?

Calm down smooman. Let me start off by saying that we all have different values and standards.

I am someone who thinks It's impractical to constantly have a baby strapped to your body. Parents are human too, and they tire out. When you tire out, you become irritant, and make bad judgments. It's best to avoid such situations and take advantage of the powers of modern technology.

Some people aren't as physically fit as you are, but they are just as loving to their children as you perhaps one day would be. So are these parents unprepared to have a kid if they are not physically fit to carry or roll around a baby for long duration?

Perhaps you should cool your jets and think about what being a good parent is about.

As long as you are a good parent, you would not let your would make sure that your car isn't dangerously hot for your child. As long as you are a smart parent, you wouldn't have to carry or roll around your baby 24-7. As long as you are a prepared parent, you would not freak out over every minute detail that does not go your way or is different from how your next door neighbor does it.

Perhaps you'd see things differently in the near future, who knows.

Thanks for your input.

I don't get why parents would leave their children in the car. I know it happens hundreds of times each year, but I still don't understand why.

Perhaps it's because the babies are heavy and physically tire out the mom. Strollers are an option but it's a bit of an hassle to load the babies if you're dropping off some mail or depositing a check for less than 5 minutes. Hence why parents choose to leave the kids behind in the car.
Leaving the kids behind the car for a short period of time isn't such a terrible thing, but being careless and rushing things often makes it much worse. The parent forgot to check her keys nor leave her windows cracked open.
I don't know who the parent was but I'm assuming they were rushing to complete a task in panic mode, forgot to take the necessary safety measures and locked the babies in the car. Then he/she came back to the car with the same mentality as he/she was dealing with his/her task. Perhaps the high-strung parent should take a chill pill and do things one at a time.

really? your reason to leave kids in the car is "because theyre too heavy and this will take just a minute"?! please dont have kids please dont have kids please dont have kids please dont have kids please dont have kids please dont have kids please dont have kids

Hit and run caught on dashcam, driver chased, denies it.

How true. Something like 1/5 of accidents involving pedestrians happen outside of crosswalks, meaning a full 80% happen inside of them. A jury in San Mateo California found that crosswalks with no traffic signals should be removed. >> ^rottenseed:

I don't EVER cross at those shady blinking-yellow-lights crosswalks. Seen too many near misses involving mothers with strollers. Don't use them...they shouldn't even exist because they give a false sense of security. Just spend the money on a pedestrian bridge.

edit: I realize this is riddled with sentence fragments>> ^longde:

In my town, we have an crosswalk that is frenquented by kids going to a park. This cross walk has yellow lights embedded in the road and on street signs for crossing pedestrians. And still you have assholes gunning past people who activate the lights.
I think drivers should absolutely always yield the right of way. I get annoyed too at slow walkers, but I figure I will get to where I'm going alot faster than they will half the time.

She needs a new brain, but so does the pedestrian. A rationalist could never get hit by a car like that.

The bitch swapped lanes (or was that she went into incoming traffic lane to pass), which lead to hitting that elderly man. Sure the old guy should have looked one last time but that's besides the point. Reckless driving inevitably leads to shit like that.
I've seen assholes behind the wheel out on the roads all the time. And they do the most dumbest shit out there. Though I have yet to witness the result of their stupidity, it's only a matter of time when they get what they deserve.
At the same time, people who cross the street frequently needs to be more goddamn courteous. I've seen people who cross the street with no fucking regards to themselves or to whether or not it is even safe to cross. And that alone pisses me off as a driver and makes me hate the pedestrian law we have in America (whereas any vehicular hit to a pedestrian results in the driver being at fault 99% of the time). People like that makes me want to run 'em over Grand Theft Auto style. And in today's day and age of techno-gadgets, people are more prone to getting hurt due to not being attentive enough to their surroundings.

Cheating Death - Near Misses With Trains

There appears to be 2 potential deaths here:
~7:07 a baby carriage rolls onto the track and is promptly demolished by the train pulling into station.

That incident was here in Australia - the baby survived with only minor injuries, fortunately. The mother had been distracted by a phone call and forgot to set the brake on the stroller. Unfortunately, the same thing happened in the same city seven months later, but again, the boy survived.

Oh thank science. I couldn't get on with my evening before I knew the bebbee was okay.
