US vs UK Ebola News Coverage

dannym3141 says...

We already have had a case of it. American and British television are like chalk and cheese - we don't have televised spelling bees (and they would seem crazy to us), we don't have angry talking heads telling us what to think like bill oreilly.. we're actually pretty good when it comes to this sort of thing. Might be because we're a relatively old nation, we've absorbed a bunch of different invasions into our populace, wars, fires, famines and plagues.. there's something called the spirit of the blitz; brits don't like to panic, we're not good at outrage and yelling. Keep calm and carry on!

I would like to see how measured the UK coverage is once they have a couple cases in their country.

Scripps Spelling Bee 2014 Fail

VoodooV says...

yeah is there a valid...purpose to spelling bees anymore other than to exploit the educational 1 percent of our youth?

does anyone from a public school ever win these or is it always socially mal-adjusted homeschooled kids?

what sort of useful skill do spelling bees teach our youth? is memorization a useful skill in the era where everyone has a pocket computer connected to the internet?

@arekin that would matter only if there were missing letters.
Here all but 1 letter were solved and he clearly pronounced the missing letter as B.
This is not a reverse spelling bee where perfect pronunciation matters.

Yup. Eric's vid has a back up as well that is the same video. *isdupe >> ^jonny:

Based on the dupeof called on this video, it appears that eric's dead video is the original. I recommend using this embed to fix eric's, as the other one is cut off and has that annoying intro.

Honestly, what did these idiots expect when they put a hyper-educated home-schooled kid with probably very little social life on the air

It's just a bad mix when you combine someone who doesn't give a crap about facts (modern journalist) with someone who probably doesn't care for anything other than facts.

Is there anything of relevant value to a spelling bee in the modern age? I mean back in the good ole days, it was a nice way to encourage education, but now it's one of those contests where you don't have a chance in hell of winning unless you dedicate yourself completely to it.

It's hard to see a difference between beauty pageant parents and spelling bee parents in this case.

You're making this tough for me.

You're making this tough for me.
