Silicon Valley - New HBO show (trailer)
Trailer didn't make me laugh. I did laugh at Office Space movie.
Honest Trailers - Gravity
Don't worry I totally agree. They tried a bunch of stuff cliche symbolism, character growth, but it didn't really mesh up with the plot of the movie. She was suicidal, but finds the will to go on through a space hallucination/talking with some rando Korean (dafuq)? What I gathered from the movie is that we shouldn't try and explore space since "gravity" will pull us back. We should just stay down on earth (since that's what Sandra Bullock spends the entire movie trying to get back to). But then they had George Clooney ask Sandra Bullock to enjoy the scenery, which she never does, which is a confusing message. I guess he was trying to say all the beauty we know is on Earth. This movie tried so so hard to be a "classic" space movie that dove into humanity, blah blah blah, bs bs bs. If anything this is a very anti space exploration movie.
Compare that to the rich symbolism of 2001: A Space Odyssey. Which juxtaposes the beginnings of humanity with where it is now, and asks what is the limit of humanity? Are we confined to Earth? It was really a movie of rebirth and redefining what humanity is and what we're capable of. Also the main character was a bad ass. Not only did he out smart the homicidal computer (which killed everyone except him). He continued his mission!
2001 and Gravity couldn't be more different.
I think they were extremely kind to this movie. Outside of the visual aspect of the movie it was pretty much shit (acting,story,dialogue...). Of course I'm one of the very few that has this opinion. Maybe i'm just getting old and grumpy. GET OFF MY LAWN!
Europa Report TRAILER (2013)
It seems to me that these type of scifi flicks often contain an element of horror, too.
I am not a big fan of this.
I understand that any good story must have conflict. But not all conflict has to be "the big bad scary monster". Sometimes it can be internal. Sometimes it can simply be the fear of the unknown.
I want to see a good, solid space movie that encompasses wonder and the element of fear without using it as an excuse to use to dip in to the horror genre.
Maybe I'll just watch 2001: A Space Odyssey again.
Oblivion -- First Trailer
If and when they make Half Life into a movie I hope it doesn't look as shitty as this. Or cast someone as awful as Tom Cruise. Has CGI not progressed since the Lost in Space movie, or the backstreet boys "Larger than Life" video?

Say there, Sarz.
Letting you know that I've checked out Community based on your recommendation and I am very pleasantly surprised. The one that did it for me was the chicken fingers episode: very clever. The season ended quite strongly (despite the requisite romantic BS) and I'm glad they got renewed.
Just wanted to give you props. On Christmas.

Yes.
Okay, here's a few:
-It's hilarious.
-It's one of the smartest shows on network TV right now.
-It's got a great ensemble cast.
-It's amazingly self-aware, but not in a smug way.
-The way it uses movie parodies is downright brilliant (eg. this paintball episode, or the episodes this season that parodied zombie movies and space movies).
I could go on, but I'll just say that Community is one of the best shows on TV right now, and that I pity the fool that isn't watching it. The first few episodes were kind of so-so, but it's really developed into something special.

Do you need any more reasons to watch Community?

What Falling From Space Looks Like
It's been done hundreds of times in fiction and it would actually work in the same way that two tin cans with a string between them can conduct sound>> ^Zyrxil:

>> ^Deano:
What's with all this sound in space then? Was Star Trek right about that as well?!!?!
Sound is vibration. For us, sound is usually propagated primarily in air, but this camera is bolted to the booster, so it "hears" those vibrations.
This makes me wonder about the feasibility of a possible plot element in a space movie\story. Two folks in spacesuits lose radio contact with each other (accident, disaster, nefarious villian) and can't communicate (soundlessly yelling, unintelligible gesturing) until one of them pulls the other one close enough for the faceshields to touch, restoring some semblance of verbal communication (tinny? bassy? muffled?).
I've seen that done before in fiction. Or do you mean whether that would actually work?

Slumdog Millionaire - M.I.A. - Paper Planes (DFA Remix)

I love how in 2007 almost nobody could see Danny Boyle's Sunshine in theatres because it only showed up on 50 screens for one weekend, and then in 2008 everyone is totally swinging from his nuts!
FWIW I think Sunshine is one of the best space movies ever!
I did get a chance to see Sunshine in theater, and thought it was quite good. Also own it on dvd now.
Another movie I saw in theater, despite zero advertisement/promos, was Equilibrium, which was awesome. (stars Christian Bale before he was in the batman series... not sure if he was a male-diva at that point in his career. Two thumbs up for any movie where Taye Diggs gets his face cut off )
And yes, I liked MIA's original paper airplanes since long before this movie, and the version they used in the movie (krupo pointed out) was fine too, I just don't like this remix. To each their own opinion.

Serenity: River vs the Whole Bar
I watched this movie about a year ago, not expecting much, but hell, I was bored. I was pleasantly surprised. I thought it was one of the better action/space movies I had seen in a while. Nice pick, atara.
"2001: A Space Odyssey" - Great Moments in Cinema
Comment hidden because you are ignoring dag. (show it anyway)
This movie really stands the test of time. I think the special effects are still more realistic than most recent space movies. The starkness of the lighting on the exterior shots, the lack of bright twinkling stars - the absence of sound ...
Kubrick was amazing.
