Kid baits NBA camera and flashes free Hong Kong shirt

newtboy says...

Karma is a bitch.
Those boomers expect following generations to take care of them in their old age. I hope they toss them in a ditch and just take their assets like the boomers did to their (our) futures. Turnabout is always fair play.

There will come a time, soon, when resources are scarce enough that only those who are productive, pulling their own weight, can be supported. Time for soylent green to be created.

Drachen_Jager said:

It's too bad the next, or even the current generation is so far away from having power as the boomers seem determined to wring every fucking dollar they can from the planet as if the Earth is disposable and the money is somehow useful where they're going.

I hope you like soylent green, soylent blue is being discontinued.

Vegan PSA: Don't Insult (Animals Are Innocent)

newtboy says...

Not all. Some of us DO see humans as potential protein sources, but that protein is highly contaminated in most cases. I have no problem contemplating smoking and eating (or better, using as livestock feed) some wild caught, free range, pure organic long pig...or soylent green once the purification process is perfected. ;-)

I think all meat-eaters agree with you to SOME extent.. or we'd see each other as potential sources of protein.

The Vegan Who Started a Butcher Shop

newtboy says...

Duh. Soylent green is made from elderly people, not teenagers, and as such it's made from pretty tainted meat. I'll take some Soylent pink, made from pure milk fed baby.

Not murder if they're terminally ill and ask you to do it, in many states.

Far more ethical to work for proper animal treatment than to insist on something that will never happen in a way that makes those you wish to convince your adversaries. He'll get WAY farther towards ending some animal suffering that your methods ever will. Your methods have had many people reply to you that they will eat MORE meat just to spite you, or so you've said in the past....so your methods are obviously failing badly, so are unethical as they cause MORE animal suffering.

Most available vegan food is processed today, so is in the same category you put bacon and deli turkey. Unprocessed meats are also far healthier than processed meats, and are more nutrient dense than plants.

Depending on the curing process, it can be bad or good (and again, not PROVEN to cause cancer...you just backed off that claim on the other thread...so why make it again?)

He wants less harm done to animals....so he's winning. he wants people to eat MORE healthily, he's winning. He wants to move away from a zealous, all or nothing movement that's failing in it's goals and making enemies in the effort, he's winning.

There isn't enough available land to switch to purely vegetarianism either, you're point is ridiculous, no one is advocating feeding all people on pure meat....he's not even advocating for vegetarians to eat meat, and said so clearly. If you had a point to make, then you've failed.

You say that like vegans aren't mostly pasty sickly looking people that look about 2 years late for death by wasting syndrome.

With logic like Ben Rukle's, I'm surprised he's not advocating Soylent Green:
It's full of nutrients that people need, since it's made from people.
It's environmentally friendly because humans are a renewable resource.
It's ethical cause people these days live comfortable lives, so it's fine to kill them in their teens.

The good old "killing humanely" argument. Yes it's better than factory farming, but killing a human in a nicer way is still murder by law, and so is treating them nicely before killing them.
If ethical living is his goal, then he's failed.

I've also heard his story many times. Eats mainly vegan junk food, which lacks nutrients (as does all processed junk food), and then somehow links that to all vegan food being unhealthy.

This is why I'm always banging on about eating unprocessed whole foods, they are nutrient dense.

You'll also notice that at the end they are eating specifically processed meat - the type proven to cause cancer. (as well as the worlds #1 killer heart-disease).
If he wants healthy food, then he's failed.

When it comes to sustainability, foods like potatoes, rice, and grains give you the most calories output for energy/water/land put in.
There also simply isn't enough land on the planet to farm animals this way and feed everyone.
If he wants sustainable farming, then he's failed.

Also he looks like he's about 2 years late for a heart-attack.

If I remember correctly, there was solylent yellow and some others as well. It was only Soylent *green* that was made of people. I'm going to have to rewatch that movie. It was pretty damn good for the early 70s .

Hell, their own FAQ makes it absolutely clear that they're well aware of the previous use of the name. They picked it from the book. Seems remarkably tone-deaf to me, but it's not my money invested.

Frankly, I can't think of any way I could be less interested in this...food is more than just nutrition. I'd no more use this pablum than I'd be interested in the dinner-in-a-pill from the Jetsons.

But it's a cool commercial, nonetheless.

"At the Soylent factory."

"But ... Soylent Green is made of people!!!!"

I wonder if they regret naming their product something cute that has turned into a tired joke?

23andMe, FDA and DNA health profiling

bremnet says...

I used 23andMe for analysis of my saliva. The DNA is mine, what I choose to do with the information is my choice alone. Same as palm reading and seeing a psychic (if that's what you're into), or peeing into a cup - I can act on the information or not, my choice. If the FDA is so worried about and more importantly has time and money to spend engaging this company on the possible health effects of users who act on the information, I'd say their priorities are fucked up or at least their motivation is unclear.

Point of contrast - here's another product that can possibly cause harm, but were's the cease and desist for this one? I can go down to the corner store and buy a known to be addictive product, with labels that indicate "Smoking Kills", but the tobacco companies are still free to sell it and go about their business. The accuracy of the tests conducted on addiction, health effects etc. related to tobacco are still in debate. You know "We're still working on it". We choose whether we want to use this product, even though it doesn't only put the users life at risk (presumably) but also those around the user (presumably), same as we choose what do with 23andMe reports. However, I'd wager the known risks and costs associated with allowing tobacco use to continue is orders of magnitude higher than it ever will be for the 400,000 or so customers that have used 23andMe to sequence a portion of our genome. Why don't we work on the hard & obvious problem first?

Tempest in a tea cup.

ps. I wonder what the ulterior motive is? Perhaps the FDA is in cahoots with Monsanto in planning copyright on specific genetic sequences for humans, as they do now for crops. Hmmm... they could call it the Soylent Green experiment.

So finally the US's standards have been harmonized with those of the PROC. About damn time, if you ask me. With some luck, TTIP will harmonize our standards as well, so we can all enjoy a bucket of genetically enhanced pink slime fried in sewer oil.
